Its been a while since I've had another crack at beating my straight pool high run and the NY resolutions & DM Invitational threads gave me an idea. A year long straight pool challenge! This challenge has two parts:

a) A Master High Run list of ALL the best runs achieved by AZ members in 2006 to find out who has the highest run of the year. (this list will be the first post of the thread which I will edit and keep updated, simply PM me if you have a high run that you want added)

b) Each member has one post where they list their personal best top 3 all time high runs. Simply for bragging rights and to give each poster an incentive to beat thier own PB. (Like the DM Invitational please add one post with your TOP3 High runs and edit this if you beat it throughout the year)

OK....Here's my favorite runs...

1. 1999, 77 and out. Not a huge run, my opponent was on 147 going to 150.
2. 1999, 106 and out. My first 100 ball run playing for money.
3. 2001, 127 during a practice session. Effortless, wish I had it on tape!

Then we moved to Florida in 2002 and I quit playing 14.1. A few good 50's and 60's at the practice rooms here. As soon as I get my table here at home I'll start up again I'm sure....................Gerry

Okay, mine are pathetic... I've never gotten through two whole racks...

1. 24 - my highest on an 8' table (2004)
2. 21 - my highest on a 9' table (2004)
3. 19 - my second highest on a 9' table (2004)

Of course, I almost never play 14.1 and I've only played it on and off in the span of about a year.

My personal 3 high runs so far

1. 46 - January 7, 2006
2. 46 - about September 25, 2005;
3. 37 - November 2, 2005.

2006 goal: 50+:)

or 75 if I get greedy.

we also have this thing on our national pool forums, but we have included 2 parts? personal high in practice AND in tournament?

anyway here are mine:

43 in training (september 2005)
15 in competition (oktober 2005)

The one: I'm sure williebetmore and others would be into this once they get back from DCC. Maybe the moderator will put this up top. We'd be doing our little bit to help keep straight pool alive. What do you think?

I would love to play more straight pool and something like this might just be the kick in the a$$ I need to get going. Craig, I would talk to Mike about creating a subforum for this it doesn't take much and would give us our own section to post our scores and just talk straight pool!

Anyways my high run in straight pool is 27 and I don't remember my other high runs.

Don't play much straight pool anymore, but I did win a small tournament several years back. My high run (and the only time I can remember keeping score not in that tournament) 25 years ago was 38. I will try to get some practice in, in between practicing 8ball. This should be fun. Thanks for suggesting it.

Do we put modifiers on it, like what table, how big the pockets, in tournament play or practice (not many tournaments around here), etc.?

Also - this is from another straight pool thread from 'the book':

When practicing straight pool how do you start out? The normal starting break is o hit the corner ball and put the cueball back to the head rail. When practicing to get a high run when do you start your count? Would it be beneficial to start out with a key ball break?

My high runs

65 in a money game ($1 a ball :D )
53 in another money game
49 in a practice

My lowly high run

My high run is 30. I missed the 31st ball because I got not so great shape on the key ball (#31) and missed it trying to juice it to get better shape on the break ball! I've not played straight in a while. I might have to start practicing some 14.1 again in what little time I have available for pool nowadays.

I have several 20 - 28 ball runs so there's really no second and third highest runs...lol.

My top 3 are:

1. 88 (in 2000, in practice at Amsterdam in NYC)

2. 79 (1998 or 1999, also at Amsterdam Billiards
money match)

3. 71 (playing a friend on his home table)

The 79 ball run was sweet, I was gambling and
giving a big spot (something like 200-75) and
my opponent got a big lead and he needed about
20 balls an I needed over 100. I got the 79 and
then went out an inning later with 25 or so.

Ran 85 last spring in a practice match against a frequent WPC player Marko Lohtander. Ironically, that was my only run of the match, after both were stuck in -1, I made a 4-ball combo from almost a full rack and ran 85. Got stuck in the rack and tried to kick a ball in, missed, and Marko ran 101-out. Nice match, my high run was 85 and his 101.

My second best is 82, from a lone practice session in 2001 or something.

My record in a tournament match is 63-out, trailing 58-12 in race to 75 (not many races in here over 75 :( )

That guy Marko can play, Mika Immonen brought
him to NYC and they were playing 15 ball
rotation and Marko ran a 3-pack!

Well then, I guess it's a good time for me to start playing 14.1. I've messed with it a couple of times, but I need something to get me past this plateau I'm in and I think this might just be the thing.

Memories...

The One,

This sounds like an excellent idea! When learning to play my Dad taught me 14:1...we'd be in the basement at the house running balls, man it was good! Have fond memories of .50c - $1.00 a Ball Sets to 100 or 150 with friends at Loree Johns Billiards in NJ in my late teens and twentys. I don't remember specific occasions where I could post a run though. Gonna start running some balls and see what I come up with.

Man The DM Memorial now this! Cool...:D

My "official" High run is 212 (March of 2000)

These days I struggle to get half way there... but I think as far as forum "members" go... John Schmidt wins hands down with his 400...(I'm pretty sure he would laugh at my 213 if I ever got there)

My top 3 high runs:

1. 52 balls - but table with really big bucket pockets, usually brag with this only on the forums!
2. 43 balls - real #1 - not so generous pockets
3. 33 balls - another good one by my standards

All of this in practice of course. In competition, just 26 once in a single tornament at 14.1 I've ever been in.
Have not tried any runs in 2006 yet!

I'm going to play tonight on my friend's 8' table... I'll let you guys know how I do! :p

I'll be in it 'TheOne'.

I had a few goes as the DM event and quickly learned my brain is not well programmed for 14.1 style play. First thing my brain picks out is the dead balls, as an 8-ball player does, and I find it irresistable to take them on too early. So a few early kisses turned out dead for position.

I could do with some 14.1 so as to read patterns a little differently...not to mention the focus it takes.

But it should include no. of attempts...or hours spent. Obviously a guy who runs a 53 in his first and only 2 hour session is much better than someone who manages a 67 after 3 months of daily sessions.

Thunbs up to the general idea though!
