Social media to promote pool.

There is a thing now called a "Flash Mob". see below.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_mob

It is the utilization of social media and is being used for things political events and even restaurant promotions that may be planned on a short notice. It gets a message out in an instant. Here is where I am going with this, I think this could be very beneficial to pool. I watched the SVB match last bight and really enjoyed it. In fact friends that were at the house where all gathered around the computer watching. One commented, how do you find out this is on and I told them about seeing it on the AZ site. He said next time if something like this is happening give me a call. I thought nothing about this till I woke up this morning and thought about it.

I started thinking that as I was watching there was maybe an average of 400 viewers according to the counter on the screen. How could this be? Easy, no one knows it is happening or where to watch it. This is a big world, I can see 10,000 watching last night maybe 100,000 why not a million, you are talking the whole world. But it can't happen if it takes place in a vacuum, like a well kept secret. This is the same with any of the live web broadcasts, no one knows they are happening outside of a small group on a forum like this that is why no one watches. The truth is, nothing on TV would get any viewers if it was not heavily advertised. Pool of course does not have the resources for any kind of major advertising but it can use social media and that's free.

Just to play devils advocate. Imagine looking for a sponsor, as is always talked about and you can come to them and tell them and say, "Oh yea we get around 50,000 viewers on our casts". I think it may actually bring some interest from a sponsor. They pay good money for magazine ads with little more then that kind of distribution. This could not happen over night but maybe faster then one may think. I in no way think this is "pie in the sky" I would not even mention it if I did. It will be doing what others are doing right now with success.

I just know I was glad I found out about last nights broadcast and I know there are thousands, maybe tens or thousands of others who never will know what they missed. Just to take this to another level, Lest say the up coming US Open was being streamed live and they had the kind of budget to advertise it on network TV. Of course they don't have that kind of money but it is a guarantee they would get a lot more the the usual few hundred viewers. "No one watches because they just don't know it is happening", It is that simple.

Just food for thought for people who know a heck more about this concept then I do.

I do know that you are right in that a lot don't watch because they don't know about it. Not everyone reads AZB, but would like to watch streams.

I don't even have a twitter account but AZ itself could have an account and update people in an instant about something going on

Yeah Mac, I had no idea until someone posted that Shane and Alex is in the finals. It is a big world, and pool will be a big sport.

Before twitter many businesses just sent out text messages. Now you can get notices of status updates on Facebook etc. Too many pool players really dont want that I have found. I have had free pool specials monthly or biweekly on Facebook and MySpace for years. But too many people just dont want a business to actually have a way to contact them. Its more for the casual player than the serious one. At least with my customers, in St. Louis.

There is a difference between an unsolicited advertisement and something someone signs up for and looks forward excitedly to getting. This is a thing for the fan and to build a fan base. It is also not localized it is world wide and no one is selling anything most of these web casts are free. The more viewers they can get the more sponsors they can realistically attract. It puts the horse back in front of the cart and gives a sponsor a reason to be interested, you have to have the viewers first. Much like a magazine brags about circulation.

With this just from this board alone you can generate a few thousand viewers in a instant. All you want is that number at the bottom of the screen to be thousands instead of the usual 200. It is a "Build it and they will came concept" and it works exponentially. It actually cost pretty much nothing to set up other then the efforts of a few with the know how.
Like I said it is not pie-in-the-sky, it is what is being done now.

I think it comes down to everyone doing their part to spread the word out no matter how small it seems for example if I'm watching a stream (or theres an event, a tournament, etc.) I usually try to post a link on my FB or twitter so other people know its going on and they can pass the word on to their friends. Its all about the small drops adding up to one big ocean.
