Bad night...

Is beating someone on a night that they are shooting off really beating them? Just curious I do not think so but just wondering if anyone else might chime in.

Why not? You still beat them. Your opponent needed to evaluate/adjust his game or not play if he was playing that poorly. Good players do this. Me, on the other hand, tries to play through it by hitting the balls harder and getting angrier.

I'd say there are two parts to the game: knowledge and execution. If your execution is better than your opponent's on a given night, you win. If you both played like crap and you still won, I wouldn't call that a win. If you played your average game and someone who usually beats you had an off night, you win. If you played well and your opponent didn't, you win.

So yeah, it's more about whether you played winning pool, not about their off night.

Sometimes you got to give YOURSELF some credit.
If you keep punishing a player for his mistakes.....
...you make him tilt

Don't you just hate it when your opponent comes up to you after the game and says, "I was playing crappy tonight".
So, hes telling you thats the only reason that you won.

You can then tell him thats the way he usually plays.

When you consider league night, lets say that two players shoot excellent, one average and one had an off night. Your team still wins.
Thats all that counts. As a team, you out shot them.

Just respond to that by saying "Funny, I was playing GREAT!"

Did Buster Douglas really beat Mike Tyson?

It's a win if you're playing:
- league
- tournament
- for money

If you were playing for fun, then it's a win if you had fun.

If you both played well you won. If you played well and he played poorly, he lost. If you both played well and you lost , he won. If you both played crappy ...... play again some other time.

I know I'm shooting well when I realize I'm not swearing. :D:D:D

If you're playing like crap you should quit before you lose some serous change. If your opponent is playing like crap and wants to keep throwing his money away that's his problem. You shouldn't feel bad, it's not like you had a gun to his head or anything...

Look at it another way. What was the quality of the win?

Did you play your best or struggle somewhat?

Did you win only because you got several turns at the table due to their bad night?

Not much is talked about the quality of a win. If I win because someone scratched on the 8ball is not of the same quality of win when I make what I refer to as a one mistake player suffer. A one mistake player is someone you play that if you make one mistake, that's it, you are in your chair for a bit.

Last night, in the 8 ball tourney, my first match was with a real inexperience player. I won the match, but it would not be a high quality win because there were a few times I struggled, for no real reason.

In the next match, I would say it was a high quality win because it was against a one mistake player. I had gotten the jitters out of me after the first match and was just stroking away.

So, look at the quality of your win and not worry about their bad night.

I can tell you I play like crap on league nights sometimes...there is some equation about just enough beer and too much...haven't figured it out and seems to change from time to time. When i play crappy and look at the league results it still says LOSS next to my name (no special annotations that I played crappy or had too many beers).. likewise when I play over my head, which is rare but does occasionally happen it says Win next to my name.....just sayin..

If I'm playing for money, I kind of hope that my opponent has an "OFF" night and doesn't play his best. ;) It's not like I'll take his money and run. He'll get another chance to win it back when he's ready!

Actually, I hope that I'm playing so good that it causes him to think he's playing bad and not at his best! Unfortunately, I really don't have that kind of game!! :frown:

I always won my most money on nights that i wasn't playing my best. If you were keeping score (gambling) then it is a win. Maybe it's not a pretty win, but a win just the same. When you matchup again your opponent may remember that you didn't play that well and then you kick the snot out of him. I would call this a win too. Like previous posters, if you had lost you would count it a loss no matter how well you may have played.

Another voice of experience (take it or leave it): life and as such pool is hard enough without you beating yourself up when it is not warranted. Take'em as you find and don't make a mountain out of a molehill.

wins and brag'n rights

No question, there is either a W or L by your name, wins are wins and losses are losses. However I don't feel like I have accomplished much if I beat someone because they had a bad night or because of an equipment failure. Beating somebody when they are having a great night is worth bragging rights if you want them.

I have made more errors than usual and won events when everyone else stumbled worse. Those were wins to laugh about rather than brag about. Other times I have had a great evening and pushed someone else to a career performance and came in second with a performance that would normally be a first place effort. I'm prouder of that second than I am of the first place on a crazy night when nobody had a good event. When I manage to win over tough competition when we are both or all performing well, that is a win to write on the wall!
