Few people know that Scott Smith beat Luther Lasssiter in Johnston City playing NineBall in the tournament when he was a teen-ager! In those days Wimpy would go years without losing a NineBall match in the tourneys.

Hey thanks Freddy, I never actually knew Scott played pool!

Btw, I was pulling for you hard in that bank ring game. Piggy had tough luck.

I was talking to my friend who just came back from the DCC about how 50 guys put up $2K to play in the qualifier.

He said at one point, Scott Smith got on the microphone and said:

"Well, we've got one spot open for the qualifier so if you've got an extra two thousand dollars, and you feel like battling it out with 50 Monster players, come give me your money."

I doubt I got the quote exactly right, but my friend said it was pretty funny at the time.

Yeah, what DABABE said....................

Scott is a fine player but tournament director and player in the same tournament don't mix.

He gets my vote. I don't know how he maintains his composure with all of the personalities and problems that each match pose.

Scott will do things for pool player friends though. He will hold up disqualifying a player when the player doesnt make his match time. Had a friend of mine wait for a couple of hours so a known player could make his match.

Freddy, how close or off the mark is Derby in relation to Johnston City? Are they close in comparison or no? For those us that weren't around for Johnston City, could you please tell us how they compare? Derby is hailed as the modern day Johnston City. Do you think that's a fair comparison? Thanks for your input. ;)

Close, but no cigar.

Timberly, my raving beauty,

One glaring difference between Johnston City and DCC is that there were few good looking women, like you and Sweet Marissa. Few women, period. In truth, Greg Sullivan recreated DCC as close as he could to JC. DCC is Johnston City multiplied by 20, but because it's so big the excitement cant reach as high a pitch. How can you replace Minnesota Fats playing Ronnie Allen? Or Harold Worst challenging Luther Lassiter? Still, DCC is a fabulous venue, and I am totally grateful for it. For those who haven't gone yet, don't dare miss it. I only wish I was 20 years younger and in stroke.

Hi Shorty,
Scott Smith played in men`s protour at the same time Joe Blackman ( Cue repairman) played in the pro tour more than 16 years ago. They both were ranked between 30-40.Scott is also a good Bar table player.

I think Scott and any other tournament director will on occasion hold up disqualifying ANY PLAYER, providing the circumstances at that particular point in time, make sense.

I hope that if I am waiting for a known player, Scott or any other tournament director will give a little extra time to the known player if it is justified. I go to tournaments to play known players not to avoid playing them and win matches because of forfeit. What's the fun in that?

However, enormous delays are a negative for waiting players and everyone. Now if you are me, I love for a player to not make it to the table on time and will only complain after at least 30 minutes of warm up time. :-)
Warm Regards,
JoeyA

This was a couple of hours and by the time the "known" player made his match my friend was tired after a long day of playing on the loser's side and this could have propelled him into a higher money bracket. By the time Scott gave this player, who had no excuse other than a shrug, my man was climbing up hill. He could have used the hours to rest.

This was not ethical and only detrimental to the player who was there waiting.

Scott does a good job running the tourney's. The thing that bothers me is, many of the "champions" aren't responsible enough to show up for their early matches. Everybody at the Derby knows that the first round of the day starts at 10 am. Every morning that I was there, I watched Scott get on the phone and try to round up at least one of the name players for a match. Their opponents had to wait, and I doubt that Scott would have made the same effort to find someone like myself.

This does sound like a quite unprofessional way to go....

Sounds like some of the weekly tourneys here....

Freddy, thank you so much for not only the very nice compliment but for also giving us some insight into how JC was and how close DCC is to it. You're right about it being so big that the excitement can't reach the pitch. There's a TON of great players at DCC and there's so many good match ups that the greatness is lost in the fact that there's a lot of it.

It definitely would've been an experience to have gone to JC. Thank you Greg Sullivan for giving me the next best thing!

Folks, like Freddy says... for those that haven't gone yet, don't dare miss it! This was my first time and I can assure you that it will not be my last time. I was just thinking last night how badly I wished it was time for DCC again! :)

I saw Efren stop a gambling late nite game in order to get some rest before his tournament matches. He never missed his matches and was out early to warm up. If he can do it so can everyone else. Scott seems to cut his friends slack.

I have pictures of Scott playing in the 70's in a California tournament - some of the players in the Sacramento tournament were Keith McCready, Jack Madden, Jay Swanson, Billy Stroud, Larry Hubbard, etc. He is a true asset to the game - I love 'm we go way back as kids growing up in Arizona. I hadn't seen in him in several years until last year's Hopkins and looking forward to seeing him again in March.

Thats one reason I dont play in a local Friday night tourneyment. If it supposed to start at 8, even if someone calls.

Start it at 8 like you posted.

Otherwise forget it.

He needs to learn to hold the mic away from his mouth about 5 inches so we can understand what the hell he's saying.

Scott Smith has become quite the celebrity on the tournament trail.

Here's a pic I took at the 2005 U.S. Open of Scott autographing one of his cigars for a fan! :p

Greg Sullivan's IDEA - Match/ PAGING for players

I think you make an important point about tournament directors treating everyone the same.

Greg Sullivan was asking some of us what we thought about him providing pagers like the disk pagers that they have at restaurants. I told him he should take all of the player's cell numbers as the pagers might be alittle expensive.

Thinking more about it, I am all for it because the DCC keeps getting bigger and better and one of the biggest problems is knowing when your next match is going to take place. I would much rather be snoozing in my hotel room waiting for a match rather than straining my eyes watching someone else's match because I can't get to a table to practice.
