Also, just embed the clip of when Alex jumped up and sprained his calf in the finals. This tournament is a true grinder. An event where eveyone involved love pool from the cellular level.

green fees ?

am i doing the math right? 3840 in green fees? just asking! 160 added after green fees?

Green fee was $20 per entry which equals to $ 3840.

Green fee goes to the pool room - Hardtimes Billiard since they cannot rent out any of their 26 tables on Saturday and half the tables on Sunday due to tournament. It is only fair Hardtimes should be compensated for not being able to rent their tables on a busy weekend.

CSI - the event producer/owner does not take a dime from this event. I know many tournament directors charge their fees but not CSI. We actually spend money out of our pocket for hotel, travel, advertisements and staff man hours that goes into making this event happen.

Why? Ask Mark Griffin. He created this Memorial Tournament in loving memory of Jay Swanson and in support of pool players. He doesn't have to but personally runs the tournament himself! And that shows true love for the game and desire to improve the game.

$20 per player is not a lot to participate in this great event and compensate Hard Times for use of the facility all day on both a Saturday and Sunday.

Besides the offset of lost revenues Holly mentioned there is also the fact that Hard Times does not serve alcohol, has no slot or poker machines, no hallways or rooms full of space rented to vendors, and has only a very limited menu of food items that might otherwise offset the costs to the room associated with basically closing down the business for two days. If they aren't getting table time they are losing money.

I've played in it for several years now and have yet to hear one participant mention it as an issue.

Besides all the reasons posted already, how much do you think it is worth it to be able to play Efren Reyes, or Francisco Bustamonte, or Alex Pagulayan in a tournement?

Plus about 20 other 'super players'?

There are a lot of green fee tournaments.
This is the same as 3 individual 64 man tournaments running simultaneously.

It is real simple - if you don't like the fees, then don't play. The cost of doing an event have to come from somewhere, and for now, it is the players pockets.

If you have any questions, please contact Mark Griffin at 702-719-7665 or markg@playcsipool.com.

I could have done without the bold section. You gave lots of good answers, offered help and then told them to screw off if they didn't like it.

I did not mean it to come across as 'screw off'. If I offended anyone I did not mean to.

Sometimes people do not see the costs affiliated with doing an event. While I was typing my response, others had posted the most logical reasons.

That should be enough to explain the situation and the reality of green fees (or administraiton fees).

I know I don't make a dime from this event - I don't really know how Eddie at Hard Times does.

I just want this event to continue and will do what I can to make that happen. Part of that is to make sure the room powner is reasonably happy so they will do the event the next time.

D., it seems every year someone comes out of the woodwork and questions the finances and Mark has really been actually pretty cool about explaining it - every year. Not like he has to but you know what I mean, it's only natural to feel like you have to defend yourself.

Believe me, any of those who have played or attended this event knows it is not a money maker for anyone - certainly not CSI. If Eddie does, well, he's supposed to make money in his pool room on weekends. I doubt he does as well as he normally does. He also gives up his own Sunday weekly tournament for this event, one which has a pretty good turnout.

I've heard similar things at events also. How does the room make any money? All of the tables are being used by the tournament.

The tournament also guarantees 192 players to be in the building for the whole weekend also (I know some leave after they're out) they all have to hydrate and eat too. Is hard times generally packed every weekend, every table?

I'm not against green fees, just throwing other info out there that might be relevant. I know I always have a tab from food and drinks if I'm at a tournament.

If I had to guess it is usually 50/50. BUt lets see if MArk cares to give out that kind of info.

I posted above that Mark does't make a dime from this event but spends money out of his pocket, i.e. Hotel, travel expense, advertising and staff man hours.

Consider it a community service from CSI. ;)

Sunny, I am sure you know I understand what you 2 put into this event. This is why I try to come out and help if I can. It was another great event and hope to see you guys soon.

Nice to see Fach Garcia did well, so did my friend Danny Petralba. Told you you shoulda heard of him!

I talked to Mark about doing a fall tourney in Southern California - we need it. Just charge a little more Mark. Riverside maybe.

Yeah, Danny played well, but he did have a bye in the first round. :embarrassed2:

I didn't question any finances. Just throwing some other info out there.

Green fees are fine in my books as long as they aren't rediculous. I wouldn't imagine paying $40 for entry and $35 for green fee would fly.

I didn't mean to suggest that you did, sorry if you thought I was. Like you, I usually have a tab when I go to the pool hall. At league, if you get something to eat and/or just have a few beers or drinks it's pretty easy to run up a tab of $20 - $30. But Hard Times doesn't have a bar - no alcohol - how many soft drinks or bottles of water can someone drink at $1.50 to make it worth their while without the benefit of tables being rented? They sell sliced pizza and I think hot dogs and that's about it so the food sales are limited as well. And they still have to have a full staff - all hands on deck - to accommodate the crowd.

It's kind of like Ames in that respect - "Just pool, mister".

Like I said, I've yet to hear anyone playing in the event complain about the green fees. Heck forget the green fees, most of us enter knowing full well we are donating $60 to the prize fund without complaint.
