Ustream to Delete Large % of Archives

I just caught the notice regarding the 10GB limit of recording on Ustream.

I have many of the matches recorded in HD, but over 90% of my archives will be gone soon! :(

Guys like myself that are recording a large amount of content will have to pick the more watched videos to save.

I am seeking an alternative solution. Bottom line is, if we have to pay for storage there will be less available.

uStream lets you upload any video straight to YouTube. That would be the easiest fix.

Are they going to give an option of paying a few to save more content?

Yea... they want $99 for 50GB storage and $500 for 500GB storage. Talk about stupid. This is a company that makes money by selling ad space over user added content. They're shooting themselves in the foot, especially with YouTube now offering live streaming.

uStream is a perfect example of a great idea that had absolutely terrible execution.

Not that easy.

Most pool matches are over 15 mins long. You would have to have a special account for longer videos. I haven't been able to get one.

You can upload the content to vimeo. They allow much larger storage than YouTube.

Vimeo said no since most of my videos have sponsor commercials.

I did explore that already. I am looking at Justin.tv and storing them on my own server.

When you start thinking about it in terms of paying for storage, I probably wouldn't store too many for viewing on demand.

I always thought that ads on the videos made the storage attractive for Ustream. At the same time many of us are now using ad-blockers because with pool, the ads often come at the worst time.

Can you divide them up into 15 minutes segments or is it too much of a pain?

Does this mean you'll have to save your archives off ustream to save them from deletion? Do they have an option to download them off the servers before they wipe them?

$500 for 500gb?! Per year or one time?

You really should look at running your own server and taking all the ad money.

They do have the download option. I'm looking at it now.

My problem is...I just found this out yesterday and I only have till Thursday of this week before they start deleting. I also have a show this coming weekend that I have to get ready for.

I have most of them from my members channel, but do not have many from the bigtruck channel.

I received your PM and will respond there as well.

Thanks,

Ray

$500 Per month.

This has nothing to do with band width only storage?

I run a supercomputer for scientific research and if I could charge that much for storage I'd have a cue collection like the world's never seen.

It's not just the storage. It's also the accessibility for anyone to go watch anytime.

I just got a quote from a "bandwidth farm". .15c a GB to upload and .18c a GB for people to access each video. That could add up fast.

Frankly, if a video has been on my Ustream page for 2 years and only has 15 views, it isn't worth storing except for historical purposes.

I am open for ideas here for sure.

Have you checked out Justin.tv? It's interface and quality I prefer 10x over UStream. It is used primarily by professional Starcraft (insanely popular computer game/S. Korea's national pastime) players. Quite a number of them make solid money with their commercial program sorry I don't know the exact details on this, but this article sheds a little light on it.

"Who's making money from streaming? Steven 'Destiny' Bonnell II is making big bucks by streaming his practice matches and ladder games. Destiny is on record as saying his Justin.tv numbers usually work out to around two dollars per thousand viewers per commercial he shows; he regularly streams to four thousand or more people. For simplicity, let's say he streams to four thousand folks on average and usually shows four commercials an hour – that comes out to $32 an hour while he's practicing. "

Another bonus I see with using Justin.tv is the possibility of attracting a younger audience to the game.

Check it out, Ray.

Yes, I am on Justin now for my Premium Videos ( The final 4 or 5 matches of each event). I like them too.

I am going to start streaming this weekend from Justin.tv for the FREE section (Friday & Saturday). The PPV will still be from Ustream, I use the password protection there. The password protection on Justin.tv is not part of the viewer and is too complicated for viewers.

It will be seemless for my viewers since I embed everything to PoolActionTV.com

GOOD news!!! I was finally acccepted by Youtube.com to put full length videos in HD!! I tested it out earlier today and it worked great. (better than my game).

I use a flash video downloader to save the archived videos locally on my PC, I actually have a bunch of your videos and others already saved, the issue is that they are not organized. So right now I have a ton of videos saved on several PCs, but I can't tell what site they came from, ustream, youtube, who is the uploader, etc... Plus they are in whatever format ustream sends it out as, so the quality is probably worse than the initial broadcast or if you recorded the match live.

Let me see what I can setup at work to save stuff, I may be able to set up a bank of computers with a downloader running and just go though your archive on Ustream and save. By Th. may be tough to capture a lot of stuff though, I do have actual work to do also hehe.
