This is a video of my trip to the Tandy store yesterday.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR8p6PGBboI&feature=youtu.be

To teach the forum about different leathers....

I was pretty tired after shopping for an hour and chasing Jessie around the store. Karen was going to hold the camera but she had to watch Jessie so what you get is what you see. Sorry that it's not better and I will do a better version next month when I get back to my shop. But for now I hope that this explains the different types and qualities of leather used in cases in a satisfactory way.

Thanks John

Thank you for taking the time to give some of us that don't know much about leather a little insight into the leather world.

Thanks again,

I will let the work speak for itself.

John what kind of leather do you use/recommend for butterfly cases ?

Can oil tan and veg tan carved combination be done with butterfly cases ?

Any leather can be used for the butterfly cases. We specialize in doing what we need to in order to make the leather fit the project. Oil tan with veg tan tooled is no problem.

Thanks John. Trying to understand the different leather types and tanning methods. I re-read our other thread and looking at the pictures, please let me know if the below generalizations are accurate:

Oil tan, veg tan, napa:

veg tan for tooling and a more shined appearance than oil tan
napa for a soft feel, slight textured appearance and more shine than oil tan
oil tan for a no shine matte appearance

Veg tan can have a matte or shiny appearance depending on the type and amount of sealer/finish that is used.

Same thing with nappa - it all depends on the finish.

True oil tan has no shine to it. It's very matte and not reflective. As you can see in the video the table which is marked "oil tan" has some leather on it that I don't consider to be oil tan. This leather has a shiny surface texture and is not colored all the way through. But it does share one characteristic which is the ability to change color when distressed.

So true oil tan, which is what we use, is always matte.

One thing we do for our customers is to arrange the leathers we have around the tubing and take pictures for your reference. So until you're happy with the look we don't build the case.

Thanks John. Great information. Might be good to list the differences and options on your site.

And thanks for taking the time to video and share your Tandy leather visit.

There is a lot that I need to do to the site to make it more informative. When you offer as much choice as we do it compounds the work to explain those choices.

You're welcome on the Tandy visit. Thanks go to Tandy Leather for allowing the video. I will try to do a better one when I get home and have a controlled environment.

I misspoke a few times in the video but I think it doesn't matter. Later I will be more comprehensive.

Hi John, I have two of ure cases and I was wondering is there a way to make a magnetic lid closure instead of snaps? I saw ure magnetic and I thought wat a great idea!!!!

Sure if you send it to us then we can convert it to a magnetic Puzzle Latch. But the cost might be prohibitive.

Snaps are fine as long as they hold up. They can hold up forever or fail in five seconds. I wouldn't worry about it until and if they fail.

Nice benefit for your customers. I'm more impressed every time I read more info on your cases.

John. I can't help but notice on this case there is a clear gap in between the carved piece and the rest of the case.

I actually like the look. It frames the carving giving it 3 dimensional depth. What was the thinking and intention of doing this ? This is the only case of yours I've seen that has this.

This is an unintended effect of the thick veg tan over the carved veg tan. We tamp down around the carved area to allow it to come up into the cavity a little but we didn't thin out the underside of the oil tan. So as a result you have a window effect instead of an inlay effect.

We have done several like this actually. Most probably don't have images that are as detailed as the one you showed.

Great POST John... learning about leather is some good knowledge to posses when purchasing a leather product.

They are having a great 8-Ball Tournament in Tulsa this weekend, too bad you didn't come... we could have spent a few minutes together...
