I just picked this cue up and wanted to take the time to tell you about this cue maker. You may not have heard of him, but you will be hearing a lot from him in the future. Vern Manning of Manning custom cues has been making cues for almost 10 years, and his hard work is starting to show. This cue, for example, is a six point cue ebony and ambonia with 3 recut points, lots of highly figured ivory, and his leather wraps are wonderful....and get this, everything is hand done by exact-o-knife!!! He makes everything himself except the bumpers, tips, and ferrules on his cues. The point work is perfect and his inlays are super sharp. Everything is lined up dead center when you look down the cue at the inlays in relation to the points. This completely hand done cue, with two shafts, 30 ivory inlays, 6 points with 3 recut points, and leather wrap..... only $1800!!!. The best thing about this cue is its hit. I'm somewhat of a player, I have played with every cue out there, played with a SW for 10 years, arthur cues, Black Boars, Ginacue's, Cog's, played with just about every high end cue maker, and I have to tell you, these cues play wonderful! I went to the tournament in Albany Ga. and saw 4 players playing with them. People are finding that Manning custom cues are that good, really one of the best cues for your money. When I see plain jane Cognoscenti's with no points and only fancy rings for $1700, I see Lambros's that look like this cue for $3500...I ask myself why are Manning cues so much less? Other cuemakers have even asked Vern why doesn't he charge more for his cues. He just wants to offer a fair price for a cue to the players, although I'm betting in a few years as these cues start getting a reputation that they deserve, the price will go up. I collect cues, and own a few $10,000 monsters, but for all those players out there looking for a $10,000 hit in a $700-$1500 cue. These cues are exactly what you are looking for.

Vern manning is a very underated cue maker. I own one of his cues as well and its unbelievable.

That is a sharp cue you have there. Cliff is turning out some nice looking work.

Thanks for the compliments Michael, I hope you will get a lot of enjoyment out of the cue. Also Jake I hope that cue of yours wins you a few in the Dothan area. I have added a picture of some of my more recent cues. Thanks again to all for the compliments.

I've seen these cues & they are nice.
The cue on the left even has ivory joint collars on the shafts. Manning prides himself on building a great playing cue. More & more players are finding out for themselves. They are built his way, no exceptions. Try one, you won't be disappointed.

Ty,
Michael

I met Vern at Valley Forge this year and we hit it off. Both ex-Navy men. I even gave him some help addressing an issue he needed help on. He since then has called me several times, and I gave him whatever help I could. I even offered to have him come and spend as much time at my shop learning anything he wanted. It's to bad that you had to try and elevate Vern's work by comparing him to me or anyone else. I think Vern can, and should, stand on his own merit !! I believe at this time is no need for me to help Vern anymore, since he is as good as I am. So I'll just have to revoke my invite to spend time with me at my shop.
Sorry Vern.

wow mike, you misinterpreted what I was trying to say about Vern's cues. I was trying to introduce players who havent heard or seen Vern's cues to his work, and trying to show that his cues are great for the price. as for you inviting him to your shop that's on you, I didn't mean for the thread to strike a nerve with you, I could have used any middle/upper tier cue makers name in the thread , not just yours or mr Gold's. regardless , I'm sorry u think I offended your work, wasn't my intension. sorry.

Well this didn't turn out very good for the OP. It's never good to compare cues to well established cuemakers.

The cue looks nice but I would no way put it in the class of Mr. Lambros or Mr. Gold. At least not yet...

Too bad. It sounds like your intent did not meet the desired results.

He should be able to compare a cue he likes to any other cue he wants to. It's his opinion. It's not his fault another cue maker would cry about it. Being ex-military, "Mike L." shouldn't even be worried or bothered about it.

While this may seem logical to you, his post obviously ruined a mentoring opportunity for Vern. Many people (including the OP) try to hype a newer cuemaker for whatever reason they may have. Sometimes those efforts backfire. If you do not think that is the case, try reading Mike's post again.

A good cue should be able to stand alone on its own merits. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. The OP's intent was to pay compliments. This time it didn't work out well.

manning cues

i really dont think cliff needs mentoring as i have known him for many years and i believe his work stand on its own.

ok people, apparently I have done something wrong. And I will try and again to apologize and see if I cant get my point across. Here we go... I'm a collector, fell in love with cues when I was 16, and have amassed a small collection of cues worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $40,000. I'm also a player, well maybe not a player, but I've run a rack or two in my time. I found a cuemaker that is up and coming, 10 years under his belt and learning every day. I really like the way that his cues play, everyone I've met that has hit balls with his cues says the same thing. I just wanted to let the players out there know about manning's cues and what my opinion is on his cues. I was trying to target the players out there who might be looking to buy a cue to play with under $2000. Most players I know and have met cant afford a $2K-$4K cue. Lets face it, mostly only collectors are in that range of cues. So I was trying to inform people that Manning custom cues makes a hell of the cue for the price, so PLAYERS can get a great quality cue at a great price. I wasn't saying that Lambros or Mr Gold, or Errnie, or Thomas, or Laurie cue's are over priced or not as well made as manning cues. Those are all high-end top cuemakers and you have to pay to get that kind of cue from them. Trust me, I've owned them all and have paid well for all of those cues and they are worth every penny. One day down the road I think Manning custom cues will be very desirable and collectable, but as a collector I would not buy a cue for investment purposes from him, he's not quite there yet, he's working on it, working very hard at it, and yes, if I had $3000-$6000 and wanted to invest in a cue I wouldn't look to vern for a cue, I'd turn to a Lambros, Cognoscenti, Ginacue, SW, or a very small hand full of other cuemakers. But as a player, and if I had $1500, and I wanted a solid player cue that had some ivory and inlay work and points, I look to vern's cues. We are talking about two different worlds here. So again, I apologize if some cuemakers got offended or mad or whatever with my post. I simply was just giving my opinion about a cuemaker that I think makes a great cue for a great price....do I think some cuemakers charge to much for their cues?... NO! I've paid over $15,000 for a cue and I think I got a steal. Was I saying that some cuemakers are better than others?...No, When I said in my first post I cant understand why cues sell for $3000 when manning's cues sell for $1500, I didn't mean that the $3000 are over priced, I was saying I don't understand why Vern doesn't charge more for his cues, and I was stressing the "bang for your buck" in a cue. That's what most players want out of a cue. Most of us out there don't have the cash to buy from the big boys, and I was simply offering up my opinion about a great cue for the price. So again, If I offended anyone, or anybody, it was not my intension. I'm sorry, now back to work for me so I can save up money for that Ginacue I want
