That is the coolest answer I have seen in a long, long time. I enjoyed the explanation with pictures.

I wish we could have more of the same in this section.

There are plenty of good threads like this, many, many as a matter of fact but they get lost in the shuffle, I suggested a sub section to the ATCM, but never got an answer so we are left with the search option. It works well.

thanks for finding and posting that very clear explanation.
what does the backward compatibe mean and how would you modify an old shaft???
is the "original" version 3/8 -10 or the modified version now used more exclusively
or as i suspect each cuemaker uses what he thinks is best for him

The picture shown above was originally used on my website to help explain why I made the switch from the std 3/8-10 pin to the Flat Bottom pin. The reference to backwards compatibility was aimed at cues that I made in the past.

When I used the std 3/8-10 pin, I bored my shafts to .302" diameter before tapping. The FB style pin has a .308" minor diameter & will not fit unless the .302" diameter is enlarged to .308". It takes about 2 minutes.

Most other 3/8-10 shafts will not require modification. They are usually bored/drilled to .3125" diameter & will have plenty of clearance for the FB pin.

I agree with Michael - there are lots of good threads here - the trouble is finding them again - so it helps to bookmark the good ones in your "Favorites" and they are easier to go back to.

The search function also works well, it's just a matter of searching for the right terms. Thumbs up  to AZB for keeping so many years of posts/threads on-line - I'm not aware that they have ever archived or deleted anything old.

i want to say this from the heart
you know in pool players for years would never help out a player trying to learn
dont know if thats the history with cuemakers or not
but the open sharing of information that must have taken some of you years of trial and error to help someone shorten the learning curve
and to have patience with someone whose not a member of the club ie not a cue maker ie me:embarrassed2:
but want to know whats behind or i should say in my cue
and how it gets there
I THANK YOU ALL FOR RESPONDING AND MY EDUCATION
.............
