Hello!!!

My name is Alex and I'm in Bakersfield, CA. I've been playing billiards since 6yrs old, won a few trophys when I was younger. Stopped playing for a number of years, then started again about 7yrs ago. I play at bars a little, pool halls more often, have my own cues, etc. I'm defiantly a novice compared to most on here I would think. I've had a pool table before in a rental house, it came with it though and stayed when I moved. Now I'm buying my own house and I bought a used table as project. It will be going in my family with a custom stained glass table light my mom is making (she does stained glass for a living).

It was fully complete with all accessories but needed bumpers and felt. I bought "The Green Book" and we fully marked everything and dis-assembled the table to move it to my garage. I'm going to be stripping the wood, staining it a dark cherry/light burgundy color and coating it with a clear lacquer, and using royal blue felt. The pockets also need some work. I planned on hiring a local shop to do the leveling, bumpers, and felt. It's a 3-piece slate Olhausen sold by SLO Billiards in CA back in 1997. I still have to measure it and mic the balls to know exactly what size everything is and then figure out which model Olhausen it is, looks like an 8'. I *think* it's a Portland Provincial.

I'm looking forward to leaning all I can and restoring the table to the best of my abilities! Attached are pictures of my starting point, loosely mocked up in my garage after moving it. I'm going to dig in to tearing the legs off and stripping the wood in a couple weeks.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, you might find the table mechanics sub forum very helpful.

Welcome to the forum!

You may not be as much of a novice as you think you are, compared to those of us on the forum. We just talk a good game. :D

Yup, that's the exact sub-forum I'm trolling now and the reason I joined! Hopefully I can contribute back when I'm done with my restoration!

If you happen to be looking for lessons or just have questions about anything pool related ask around about Brian Parks. He is a great guy and I am sure he will help you if needed. He happens to have won the Amateur Championship too.

Thanks for the tip! I doubt I'll be looking for any lessons tho or anything. I only play for fun with buddies while having a few drinks kinda thing. I don't play clubs or competitions. It keeps me at home and away from bars when I'm bored which makes the woman happy and keeps me from being an alcoholic just to shoot pool and relax after a days work

Welcome to the forums! A couple of things though, they are called "rails", not bumpers; it's a "cloth", not "felt", and by all means don't say you are here "trolling"! Trolls on a forum are a bad thing, I know what you meant, but that's not what you want to be associated with!

Noted, thanks for the corrections so I sound like a newb in any other threads I start lol! Rails, cloth, no "trolling", got it

Now I'll go back "perusing" that forum :D

Hey Buddy, give a shout out to my old friend Mike Francis. Does he still own the "new" Cue Ball Billiards? I owned the first one back in the 70's. It was at 19th and Chester. I had a house up in Panarama Heights.

Haven't heard of him or the place, but I've only been here a few years. Small world though, I also live in Panarama Heights.

We just talk a good game.

Yeah, Joey is still learning how to aim.

Maybe if you know anything about that ATC or whatever its called you can help him Alex.

BTW, welcome, have fun and enjoy yourself.

JoeyA is new to the game but he tries hard and that's why we like him. He likes to throw away money. Youshould get over to Louisiana and match up with him. Anyways welcome to the forum.

Welcome Alex! NOW ya got it down! LOL There's tons to learn all over this site. Be careful, you can lose a lot of hours around here! Good luck with your table project. Be sure and read dsoriano's thread about how his new poolroom is turning out...one of the better threads here!

Alex/Jay

Mike Francis is still out there at the 'Que Ball' on Rosedale Hwy. Brian Parks told me a few weeks that Mike is still as cranky and negative as ever! We all used to hang out at the 'Corner Pocket' at Ming and Wible back in the '90s.

Alex, a good place to look-up Brian is at the Que Ball. If you run into Brian let him know that I'm keeping 'his' cue in line and that it did pretty good last night!
