Calling Out Bill Stroud - You Ought To Be Ashamed - DYD Contest

I expect some will probably feel the need to flame away so please know, my asbestos underwear are on.

It's now been approximately 19 months since the end of the "Design Your Dream" cue contest that Bill Stroud challenged az'ers with which was ultimately won by mhaimi.

Bill Stroud publicly stated here on az that any typical 4 point cue should take no longer than 8 weeks to build. I understand that mhaimi's design is not typical but it's not especially outrageous, either. It has been about 76 weeks and counting.

I have a small sweat bet as to whether Bill will complete this cue by the end of this month and since I bet on Bill, I will be paying this off with a smile. I really will do so with a smile, because I've enjoyed the good hearted ribbing and back-and-forths I've had with iba.

Bill has decided to get back into tournament-level pool play and, apparently, that's what he's spending much of his time on these days. I think it's patently unfair, however, to have this major piece of business left unfinished and for the contest winner to be left twisting in the wind. It's very disrespectful.

The DYD thread had over 35,000 hits and, I believe, approx 250 designs were entered. Bill created a whole lot of interest in cue design and lot of people spent plenty of time working on their submissions. I think Bill's decision to put mhaimi's cue on the back burner could, and frankly, should, tarnish his rep and legacy. What a lousy way to go out after such an illustrious career. :(

Mhaimi, I hope you get your cue and, personally, I still think you will. But all of the shine has definitely come off of this contest, imo.

And for anyone who may mistakenly feel I'm posting this hoping, that in a last ditch effort I may still win a bet, I assure you that isn't the case, at all. In fact, on the absolutely off chance that the cue did miraculously get delivered by the end of this month, I would donate it to charity (verifiable, of course).

The reason for this post is to remind Bill of his obligation.

Best,
brian kc

If I was a cue maker ready to retire and wanted to go out w/ a bang (contest), I wouldn't do anything until the cue was done -- deliver it--- look like a champ-- and then go play pool. But, that's just me.

Regardless of what anyone says, the fact we're almost 2 years out is frankly a joke. I'm sure Bill is a good guy, but G'DAMN did he dog this or what?

Bill's ass is prob chapped from all of the negative posts. But hey, if he would have followed through like he said --- no one would have done a thing but sung the praises of Mr. Stroud.

Instead, nearly 2 years later, many of us are left thinking less than illustrious thoughts about the man.

IBA DEF had the better side of that bet. I'm shocked you went into this situation betting on Bill. Normally, you don't move that bad, chicken.

Sorry, but the only thing that comes to mind is Steven Wright..

"I thought you were open 24 hours!"

"Not in a row.."

:duck:

:sorry:

Not too surprising. Its hard to find anyone who keeps their word nowadays. Thanks for the update. After the last long thread, I didn't expect anything different, unfortunately.

Winner, winner chicken dinner. But seriously, the real loser here is mhaimi as well as everyone else who participated. It is a shame.

I saw Bill Stroud at the Derby for the first time ever. I had it set in my mind to tell him how sh**ty his actions were, but I was halted by his age. Although this may keep me from verbally berating him, it does not excuse the fact that his reputation should forever be tarnished.

well a friend of mine has ben waiting over a year to get his four point basic cue that he orded 16 months ago that he paid him in a check for $3000 in full . Bill stopped answering his calls and all calls from New Hampshire I even tried to call to see if he would answer an unfamiliar number and nope no answer.

I should have created a bet in the action area who would deliver cue(s) owed sooner Bill Stroud or Jim Lee lol. Glad I wasted time creating a cue for an imaginary contest....good practice I guess on my shtty drawing skills.

Over the years I have found myself insisting that people take payment when they say they will help me move for free or when I really need to make sure that something will happen.

I'm not at all suggesting that's what the winner of the contest should have done I'm just pointing out how flaky I think people in general are when it comes to doing something for free.

It doesn't have anything to do with doing something for free.
It's keeping your promise or being a man of your word.

Apparently even when getting paid, Bill still flakes out:

My point is that if this guy put $3000 in escrow upon delivery of his cue (not the contest winner) then he would have his cue by now.

I had a guy promise to help me move for free once and when he saw how much work it was he faked an illness and I was screwed. Ever since I have paid my friends who needed the money and they worked hard til the job was done then I paid them.

I've always had a truck and was being constantly asked to help move people. All of the others never showed up so it was always me doing the moving.

After having enuff of this, I just said, if you need my truck, bring your car over and borrow my truck for the day.

Worked for me.

Cut the guy some slack.

It can be really tough for a full time pool player to find the time for anything but play pool. You know - with having to practice for 14 hours a day and then compete everyday on top of that. There's barely enough time to eat and sleep after you subtract all the table time. How's he suppose to fit this cue in???

I feel kinda bad about this -- I don't know why, but I thought this was a dead issue, Bill having agreed to finish the cue. If I had known, I would have jacked him about it at the US One Pocket Dinner, or when we practiced for two hours before the tournament.
