You have an easy safety in eight ball to just roll up on a ball and leave your opponent nothing. The ball is froze to a rail, but your opponent didn't call it froze. Would you shoot this shot?

Absolutely. I wouldn't jump right up though, I'd give my opponent a few seconds to call it froze, while I was chalking my cue, or walking around the table.

Its not the shooter's responsibility to call a ball frozen.

You have an interesting view of right and wrong . . .
Perhaps it makes a difference to you concerning the stakes of the game? would you play it differently for $1 versus $100?
Or doesn't it matter?

You do realize of course that a match with an umpire would call it frozen.

These threads come up ALL the time. There will never be agreement on what is right or wrong. Its one thing if the opponent is in the bathroom, and you move the balls to your liking with your hand. That is flat out cheating. If your opponent is by the table and paying attention, and doesn't call a frozen ball, its not cheating if you then go ahead and shoot the shot.

We can come up with MANY examples in a game where some people will thing its unsportsmanlike, some people will think its unethical, some people will think its flat out cheating, and some people will think its within the rules.

You are entirely correct sir. I agree with you, on THAT.
Let us say that we can agree to disagree on the discussion at hand.

So this was a loaded question type poll, we all know that...

My personal ethics in the game is if I caused the action, I will say it, even if the opponent didn't see it. So if I double hit the cue, or didn't get a rail, I'll call a foul on myself.

But if something happened as a result of my opponent shooting, such as he doesn't call a ball frozen, or he is about to shoot the wrong ball in 9 ball, or to the wrong pocket in one hole, I will keep my mouth shut until after the shot.

Its not my responsibility to babysit my opponent, and make sure his head is in the game.

truth plain simple and moral

No. It's cheating even if you don't get caught.

One Iron and thommy
Very moral responce.
I play the game by its rules, my opponent has no bearing on my
morality.

And i try to pick my friends with the same values

I got a situation when I was doing a break and run-out. I made 2 balls on the break, the table was easy, when there were 4 balls left, I got to stretch out for the 6 ball and my bridge hand slightly touched the other ball. I was sure no one noticed that. But I still stop, lol and admitted the foul.

so my answer to your situation is NO.

The reason I posted the question is I have a disagreement with a friend who believes he isn't commiting a foul because if the opponent doesn't call it the ball isn't froze according to the rules. I was just curious to see what the average player here thinks.

Marsman what did you do......

Everyone knows the difference between right or wrong.

There is no in between.

It doesn't matter whether you are gambling or not.

Character is what is holding pool from becoming the great game we know it

Just my two cents Barney

So to each of you that said the situation Mars described is cheating and/or unsportsmanlike, I have a question for you:

If you are on 2 fouls, and the opponent does not tell you, and you foul a 3rd time, will you rack up the balls and tell your opponent its his break?

Mars, regardless of where one's "ethics lie", a rule is a rule. If the rule book says the opponent must declare the ball frozen, then that is the rule. The rule book does not define who is a nice guy and who is a bad guy.

That said, you should settle the argument with your friend by researching the rule book, and seeing what it says. Our comments on this thread are just opinions. The rule book is the final authority. Same as in court. The judge follows the laws. He doesn't go with his gut, his feelings, popular opinion, etc. He must follow the law.
