Making balls the easy way

OK, my earlier topic about spin and such got a little out-of-hand. My intent was to evolve the topic into how to improve shot making and safeties based upon knowledge of what happens w/English. I tried to startle people into seeing the picture, kind of like you can look a window or rather to see everything by looking out the window. This was a bad approach on my part. As I promised, I will not post any response to anymore billiard principles topics, instead I will post the questions and let the "Experts" provide the answers.

First premise; Everyone agrees that the OB does change rotation when hit with English (any left or right) until it becomes running English (that is unless it reverses by a rail or another ball). This can be a clear advantage to the shooter. Yes, we can hit the ball so firm to delay this from happening to soon, this is also understood.

Questions;

1. I understand that a 4.5 inch pocket can be played as if it were a 6" pocket with correct OB speed and spin. When is this possible and how does the combination of speed plus catching the right OB spin make this happen?

2. I have a straight in shot, away from the rail such that have pocket only to shot for (hit a rail, it will not go in). How can I decide what part of the pocket to aim for and what OB speed and rotation improves this shot making?

3. The OB is on the rail and my CB requires that a cut is needed and the OB must past the side rail. What is the best way to play this shot?

4. Same as 3 but my OB is 1/4 inch off the rail.

These are very important shots to know especially when shooting the 9 ball or 8 ball to win or lose a game.

Not sure what shot you are after but here is a great example of how transfered spin helps make a shot.

When shooting this shot, there are two ways I approach it.

1 - If slow sped is required I hit it towards the rail just a bit. if it is slow, the pocket plays bigger since you can hit the rail well before the pocket and use pocket speed as opposed to using the pro side of the pocket.

2 - Here is where the spin comes in - Putting some speed on the ball or just neding to hit the pro side.

Aim at the pro side. To help this ball fall you will need the OB to have right english so it turns off the facing into the pocket. If it has left english, it is WAY more likely to spit out of the pocket. Especially if you hit the ball hard.

This means putting left spin on the CB so right spin gets transfered. Its not alot but it helps ALOT. You can test this by firing in the ball at high sped. If you hit the facing, clean, with the wrong spin, the ball will rattle out. If you hit it fast and clean with the correct spin, it falls right in.

I think that is the best test for useful spin transfering.

I think the answer to all 3 of your situations is the same. If the object ball is coming off a rail or point left of the pocket the object ball would have right spin (left spin on cueball). If coming off a rail or point on right side of pocket left spin on object ball (right spin on cueball). However it's pretty rare when you would need to try to spin a ball into a pocket. The effect is so minimal and the risk of making the shot more difficult and innacurate is not really worth it in my opinion.
