Help with Mottey Cue

Hello,

I am new here, but realized rather quickly that this is a very informative site, with lots of information to be gathered. I have been fortunate enough to have acquired several cues over the fast few years, and am looking to get some additional info. I have an undated Paul Mottey cue, it is a Szamboti design. Was trying to get a rough idea of its worth, as I may be selling it. Any info is greatly appreciated.

gl in your sell...

if everything is straight and cue is 58in i would guess anywhere from 1000 to 1400....depends on how much someone is looking a plain 4 pointer....i think it would sell fairly quick around a 1000 and if someone just has to have it because it color combo or they have been looking for a a good player maybe a 13 to 14 hundy....jmho

Since it is undated that makes me suspect it is an early cue, in the first few years of his work. If so, it may have some collector interest from that perspective even though it is a fairly plain cue. Is it a 14 pin?

I think it's a great looking cue, classic. A Mottey is my dream cue ever since I visited his shop around 1990 or so. Someday.....

Thanks for the replies.... cue is in 95 percent condition, I dont really see any nicks or dings, but that doesnt mean someone else wont. Rolls straight..... the being undated is what peaked my curiosity, as I hadnt seen a lot of those. It does play great.

I recommend you send it to Paul. That is not what his signature looks like. He can be e-mailed, I would send him pics. Could have been refinished and resigned by the person that did the work.

If it is Pauls, see if he can date it.

To answer the next question...

This is his signature....

True enough, it looks different.

I believe his earlier signature was a little different than the later one though.

But I am no expert on that matter at all.

As you say, only one way to tell for sure....send it to him.

It may get some provenance on the cue as well. If he recognizes it he may know when he made it, who he made it for, etc.

Best strategy is to involve Mottey.

There is always the possibility that he will deny the work. It is obviously a good cue though....

Hmmm,

I sure hope I have not been holding a forgery for 10 plus years..... are Mottey fakes that common? Where do I get the info to send this to Paul?

Thanks again, hope I get better news than this would appear to be heading.

I found the website for his Breakers Billiards, and emailed him there..... hopefully I can get this figured out before to long.

Thanks again for the help.

Like I said, not fake, just maybe refinished and the person didn't want to lose the signature.

Well the cue is on its way to Paul. I will be very curious to see what the results are, seeing as I purchased this from another cue maker quite a long time ago.

Well just got the news, and it is a fake. I have been hanging onto this cue for nine or ten years, unreal. I will probably just have it cut up. The part that blows is I was trying to sell it and maybe one more to give as a donation to cancer research. My brother died of Hodgkins Lymphoma two years ago, and I had been wanting to help out a bit, either to a charity or directly to a family affected by it.

Anyway, thanks for all the replies, and hopefully this doesn't happen to anyone on this board.

Before you go crazy, it appears that it is a quality cue. I think you may want to rethink your position on cutting it up.

Problem is I really dont want to pay to have it refinished, just to remove his name, and I won't let that cue get out for someone else to try and pass it off as the "Real Deal". Not really sure what the best solution is.

i will email him back and see what James would charge.... I had it refinished when I first purchased it, and had hoped the person who redid it had accidentely erased the signature. O well, at least I will have a story for the auction.

Thanks

Darn shame.

You couldn't sell it on Ebay with that signature. And I understand the concern about the possibility of a buyer trying to pass it off as genuine to somebody else.

But I would give serious consideration to various options before considering destroying the cue. It looks like a decent cue.

I also understand not wanting to put money into a refinish. Refinishing just the forearm can be relatively inexpensive though, the cue does not looks like it has "issues" so it should be straightforward. It need not be a complete refinish.

Also, we can put our heads together on this. You are a new member here with no iTrader rating, with a forgery on your hands, some might be suspicious...but I think we can at least make suggestions, and perhaps cooperate to help. On the face of it you seem to have been straightforward about it and even sent the cue to Mottey. We should try to help.

Let me think of some suggestions. The cue is not worthless. Let's see....

Tell you what I'll do. Send me your regular e-mail, name and address to jvan@classiccues.com. As long as your cue is straight, I will swap the cue out for so you can have the auction. I will send you a cue, and case, of my choosing. I will write a letter for the cue that I send you.

My brother also died of lymphoma at 18 in 1993. I'll take care of the refinish and removing the name so it doesn't get passed along.
