Newbie here looking for opinions on Dale Perry Cues. I have never played with one, so I'm wanting to know what others think.

You may find that a lot of people have a low opinion of Dale Perry cues. A few years back, Dale found that he could sell more cues by turning them out in enormous quantities and acting as his own dealer, selling scores of them on ebay. As a result, there is certainly no shortage of DP cues.

From a collectability standpoint, the fact that there are so many makes them worth very little. From a design standpoint, they leave a bit to be desired as well.

My opinion? They are not too attractive and the play is mediocre. Its nothing spectacular. After all, he churns out so many a year that something has to be sacrificed along the way. This is not to say that they are the worst cues around. Not by a long shot. They are simply not in the upper eschelon of cues. For the moeny, you should look at cuemakers like Brian Mordt (BCM), Travis Niklich (BlackCreek), and even Andy Gilbert to name a few. Their prices are similar. Their designs are A LOT cleaner, and their play is superior.

Collectibility- 0. These guys on here wouldn't take one if
you gave it to them. See Pharoah' s reasons. Very true.

Design- I have 2 that catch the eye of most people who
see them.

Playability- very good.
I believe that most on here dislike him so much for flooding
the market & destroying the cue's value that they can't
look at his positive factors objectively. If I didn't give a
damn about re-sale value & just wanted a nice looking,
great hitting cue, you can't go wrong with a DP cue. JMHO.

If you know of a nice looking, 6 point Gilbert within $750 of
what I paid for my DP, give me a yell. Just what I've been
looking for.

Wonder how many 1/1 cues he has made...... They all look very similar, and it's your basic "custom" boilerplate cue...

I have a DP cue. I was looking specifically for an attractive looking cue with a good amount of turquoise on it. His was by far the least expensive and pretty much just what I was looking for design-wise. It hits great with a wood to wood joint, you usually get a couple of shafts and can pick your diameter. Once I got it, I was very happy with the figure of the wood, the wrap, and the way it plays. The overall craftsmanship was very good also. I would definitely recommend one if you like the way it looks in spite of the non collectability. I didn't buy it to resell it later for more money, I bought it to play with. I doubt it will devalue much unless you really beat it up.

DP Cues

Here's my two cents. I bought one last summer from his ebay auction because I'm a purple heart and ebony fan and there was one up for sale that I liked the looks of. I got to decide weight and shaft diameter. Dale was easy to work with on the phone and the cue came when promised. I like the hit of it and often get compliments on it's design. (I prefer something understated that lets the wood do the talking.) I didn't buy it with the intention of collecting but playing. For that, it's great.

A local custom cue maker told me that DPs are well made cues and he had nothing but good things to say about it when I showed it to him.

If you are looking for information on how they play, it may be more difficult now. Dale has eliminated most of his dealers now that he sells on Ebay. So it is hard to try one out unless you know someone personally that has one. I agree that dollar for dollar that Blackcreek cues, and Andy Gilbert cues are great cues for the money. I have never had any problem selling them in my billiard parlor. They have a great reputation with players in terms of craftsmanship. They also have a great reputation value wise if you ever want to sell them later. I have no experience with Brian Mordt so I cant comment either way and be honest. Depending on your area of the country there are probably a lot a local cuemakers that we have not heard of. Always give them a try...they might be a future collectable..you never know. I know here in St. Louis that is how Blackcreek started. He just had a reputation of doing plain cues that hit really well. Outside of league players and tournament regulars not a lot of people knew of him. Now I have players ASKING for him. So don't settle on one cuemaker too quick. Be open minded and you might be pleasantly surprised by what you find. Good luck!

I have 3 DP cues

I have 3 made for me by Dale with my design and I love every one and would recommend Dale to anyone. In my opinion he done some of us players a favor by offering a great playing cue....and a nice looking cue to players at a great price. I don't care who you are, you just can't beat the cue for the money.

AND BESIDES...THE CUE DON'T MAKE THE PLAYER !!!

Just my 2 cents....

I bought a DP a couple years ago off eBay, before he was selling a zillion of them for cheap. Why? I was curious how they played and wanted to learn about his cues. The cue actually played pretty good and looked great for the money. I decided it wasn't for me so I sold it to a friend who loved it. I made $75 on the deal. the cue developed a tick in the tip area in both shafts so the new owner decided to have a local cue maker replace the tip - he said it needed new ferrules and replaced them. I contacted Dale to see if he could, or would, do something to make things right and I never even received a reply to my few emails...not even a "FU". Nothing.

For the money the cue is a good buy, but the customer service sucks. Since sharing this story with a few people I have learned that this is not the first time there's been a customer service issue and will probably not be the last. I think he's cranking out so many cues there's bound to be little things go wrong. You may have to spend a little more than you figured before it's right????

I was considering buying a few and selling them in this area but after my experience, no way. By the way I split the cost of the new ferrules with my customer so I only made $45.

Dale Perrys hit very good. If you are looking for a cue that has resale value, don't buy a DP. But if you are looking for a nice looking cue that hits good, buy one, because for the money you can't beat it.

My bad. You are right. I honestly thought Perry was pricing his cues a little higher than they seem to be going for on ebay. I will say that as far as pricing goes, I had a 5 point Gilbert with 5 windows in the butt sleeve. 40 ivory inlays, Ivory and silver sings, and an ivory joint and that was $1200. Not too bad! Plain janes and 4 pointers? Less than a grand.

If you're looking for something comparable in price, you could try Coker. Some Cokers go for $400-$600 on ebay. And they aren't half as ugly as DP's cues.
