Well, at least it was new to me. It was called shooting gallery. It is worth the time to watch. It was a good flick. I rented it from Blockbuster online. It was a 2005 movie.

Jericho Hudson is a street smart kid with a gift for shooting pool. He finds himself in the middle of a dangerous hustle when he's played as a pawn in a contest of wits and Nine Ball between two legendary pool hustlers, Cue Ball Carl Bridges and Tenderloin Tony, and a Vice cop, Timothy Mortensen.

Freddie Prinze
Ving Rhames
Roselyn Sanchez

yeah i liked it too. The female leading part is... wel :D HABBA HABBA COME TO PAPPA!!, its a bit like poolhalljunkies style, but less humour and more shooting. but its a good movie. even my gf who isnt a poolfreak liked it. The poolgames itself arent of the highest standard. i would give it a 7/10.

ow btw, use pen and paper when u watch it. Hard to get who is hustling who and who are the good and bad guys. FREAKING complicated story, but maybe im just not very smart. (j/k its a good movie)

really disappointing

I rented this through netflix last week and both my bf and I were really disapointed with this movie. we couldn't wipe the blank stares of disbelief of how bad this movie was for days.

It has a weak and complicated story line that tries way too hard to be believeable, unlikely trick shots on carpet cloth, extraneous violence and wooden acting from ving and Freddie.

We really wanted to like this movie, but just couldn't. I looked up more reviews on movies.yahoo.com and seems like most everyone had similar thoughts

well always hard to rate a movie. all personal opinions.

im almost scared to say it, as im sure some would like to shoot me and keep kicking me while im death, but i hated The hustler. i fell asleep twice in my double attempt to see it trough the end, but i just couldnt. I find it SO boring.

my top4:
1/ poolhalljunkies (LOVE IT) (10/10)
2+3/ shooting gallery + Color of Money (ok) (7/10)
4/ Stickman ( about JUST managable, story is just a copy of PHJ. (5/10)

and thats it. All other movies id rate them below 5/10

*runs away from all the people who think im a nutcase of not putting hustler in my top4

I was sitting here in disbelief reading this thread.. LOL I watched that movie awhile back, and it was sitting around the house for awhile, my roomate (also a player) asked if it was worth watching and I told him it was the largest waste of 2 hours of my life. Without a doubt one of the worst flicks of all time.

For the guy that hated the hustler. If you watch it as a movie patron, and not a pool player you might find it more interesting. ;) :D The subtle nuances throughout the flick hold true to life for the most part, and the love story part of it damn near makes me tear up. Now you might be thinking to yourself, "tear up?" Not in one of those homo kinda ways, it's becuase a girl loves a man and see's him going down a road that's not the right path. She tries to talk, and at one point in the movie I believe even tells him "there's nothing I can say is there." She ends up killing herself or in other words paying the ultimate price to help "save" (on some level) her man. That's loyalty just not found in women these days.. ;) Reminds me quite a bit of the movie HEAT where Val Kilmers chick waves him off as he approached the house.. Knowing she'd never see him again, and by doing so was breaching her agreement with the Feds and could possibly lose her kid. Aaaahhhhh good stuff.

I saw that movie a while back. It was ok, but my favorite part was definitely Roselyn Sanchez. ;)

Shooting Gallery

I haven't seen it, but because it is a Pool movie, I would suffer through it.

Just recently got a copy of PHJ and watched it twice in 1 night, and I liked it. Having known actors in it helped the film quite a bit, especially since Christopher Walken is one of my favorite actors. Mars Callahan did do a good job in the film I thought.

It has been a long time, but I might try to suffer through another run of my copy of 'Chalk' again since I just got a better VCR, but it was rather dark and bad sound before if I remember correctly.

Well said, DJ. This is what I wanted to say.. but was afraid to... haha

The Hustler and The Color of Money were both works of art that had everything to do with character and inner worth. PHJ and probably Shooting Gallery are projects with cartoon characters and extravagant hustles that you don't see in real life. TCM and the Hustler work because the pool is 100% believable and fits what one would expect in that millieu.

I can watch the Hustler and the Color of Money a hundred times more and still get nuances of the story that I hadn't seen before. With something like Pool Hall Junkies it is enough to see it once for the mindless entertainment value.

Well on that note, I see some references to other pool movies here I've not heard of before..

What's "chalk?" as well as stickmen and where can I rent/buy a copy of it?

as well I've been looking around for pool hall junkies, but for some reason block buster no hollywood rentals have copies of it?

Any other movies I should look into watching? (pool related)

Stickmen is a New Zealand film that deals more with the social side of an 8-Ball competition than the actual play. It's OK, but not as good as PHJ. You can get it from Billiard Boys at http://www.billiardboys.com/store/index.php/cPath/18
Chalk is an older film, search the forum and you'll find several reviews

Probably the best of the rest:
The Baron and the Kid - 1984 film starring the late Johnny Cash. There is a small part for Mike Massey and the cast list includes Dr Pocket played by the unlikely named actor Earl Poole Ball.
Richard Rountree makes a fleeting appearance. He as better known as Shaft - but was he a Black Dot one?
The Baltimore Bullett starring Omar Sharif and James Coburn (1980).
Willie Mosconi, Irving Crane, Allen Hopkins, Lou Butera all show up in this one.
Kiss Shot - Whoopi Goldberg puts a female slant on things.

maybe my tastes are different because i live in belgium europe? no idea. We dont have hustlers here, so ive got nothing to relate too. i dont remember the part where the woman kills herself.. probably was after i fell asleep. MY gf has exactly same idea of top5 movies as me. maybe its just a european thing. or maybe we both are just very weird persons with weird tastes :D

Amazon.com, and look for 'used' copies, you can get them really cheap.
I got Pool Hall Junkies VHS for 2.52 (5.02 with shipping), and I just ordered 'Shooting Gallery' today, used copy, for 3.97 (6.46 with shipping).

What is the name ...

of that German film that someone mentioned on here about a Pool player.
I would like to get that one too, if I could.

I know this really isnt the direction that this thread started out, but The Hustler and The Color of Money were both great great films. Not only were the plots very believeable, but the acting was top notch also. The Baltimore Bullet was very entertaining as was Poolhall Junkies in my opinion. Stickmen was pretty bad....I mean come on, a movie about playing 8 ball! I havent seen shooting gallery, but being a pool player and a gambler, I will watch it. The WORST WORST WORST pool movie I have seen is Up Against the 8. I cant even begin to tell you how bad the plot, acting or the pool shots are. Chalk was an independent film that was pretty good. It is really hard to find now though.

If you are easily entertained by bankshots and masses, PHJ is the movie for you... Bit if you understand the pychology of hustling (I cant belive I said that... lol), then you can follow, understand, and apreciate The Hustler and TCM... When I was a kid, i did not like the Hustler or TCM, I did not unstand it...
I go to the poolhall just to watch the hustlers... Anyone can make a good shot... The hard part is talking your mark into beliving you cant make that shot and you are lucky, even when he saw you make it several times... lol...
