Varney J/B Cue Review

I just received my new Vareny j/b cue Friday. All I can say is that this cue breaks like a cannon. Power and control, spreading the balls out nicely. I made at least one ball on the break everytime, three on the first time I broke with this cue. As far as jumping with this cue its very easy and very accurate to do. I jumped a ball about a ball width away fist time I jumped with it. Also I was impressed with the canvas resin tip on this cue how it held chalk, even better then the xbreaker that I had. In the past I have had numerous j/b cues in the past (even the xbreaker) this cue by far the best one yet. Kevin Vareny makes high quality custom cue at a fair price A+

Did you use a Predator ferrule?
 :D :)
j/k
Varney, do you still have some old glass melamine ferrules?
thnx

No. I used to have a bit of the old yellow melamine but its long gone. That stuff hit/played better than anything ever. LOL...I get warm & fuzzy when a customer shows up with it on an old Schon or SW.

You mean Micarta.
The new Melamine from Atlas looks like board chalk now.
The old hard one that pings is what I'm looking for.

You are correct...long day...I read glass melamine but my brain answered paper micarta. Sorry. I actually don't have any of that left either. I had stopped using it because unless using it capped, had a few crack. I know what you mean about Atlas...I just did receive an order of Aegis rod...its not even close to the previous Aegis. Good news is their new Ivorine 4. If you haven't tried it...it super clean, no trash/blk spots and so hard its unreal. Absolutely bulletproof. I have yet to used it capped yet, but I'm sure it will "ping" its so hard. I had chucked up the rod and was going to cut a piece off with my hacksaw...LOL...flattened the teeth out in 2 seconds. Have to use carbide to cut it. It does polish up bright white though and resist staining...and no pits to fill either. When polished you can see a white weave pattern very much like what the canvas resin has.
Try it..so far I love it...lets hope the QC & formula stays the same.

Last time I ordered...Atlas informed me that they discontinued all Melamine.
Funny thing...now the Aegis is only available in hollow tube...no solid rod. And the Ivorine 4 is only available in solid rod, no tube. The Aegis tube I received looks like Prather linen. Maybe I got a bad section but it was very, very porous with a lot of trash. If you haven't already...give the Ivorine 4 rod a try...seriously..good stuff. And on a side note...if you don't already know...they now have the g10 pins in black...sweet.

I hestitate to use words like cannon, hammer, jack rabbit, etc.

I will say however, that since I got my Varney J/B cue, there has been a quantum improvement in my breaking performance, both in balls made and cue control.

If memory serves me correctly, the study Bob Byrne did a number of years ago proved a break cue in the 17.7 to 18.0 ounce range generated the fastest break speeds. He took the end rail off a gold crown (I believe) and set up a radar gun. He, then, had a number of top pros simulate their break shots with different cues covering a wide range of weights.
For myself, I use 3 different break cues depending on the equipment I am playing on (quirky, huh?).
For a big table with a red circle, I use a Mystick "Ball Buster" designated break cue (18.0 ounces) with a hard leather tip.
For bar boxes with a heavy cue ball, I use a modified Mcdermott butt (23.5 ounces) with a Mystick break cue shaft with a hard Sniper tip.
For big tables with light cue ball, I use a Hillybilly Thunder break cue (18.0 ounces) with a phenolic tip.
I know, I know, it seems weird but it's all about control on the break shot and this works very well for me.
(Side note: When I was out at the BCA nationals last year, I broke with my Mystick break cue with a radar gun and was greatly surprised that I broke consistantly from 22.8 to 23.6 mph.)
