Jay Helfert - The "Million Dollar" Tournament Director $peaks Out on Earl Strickland

Jay has a perspective that no other tournament director in history has - he racked and refereed a single match worth ONE MILLION DOLLARS.

How would you feel racking for a million dollar opportunity? We all know Earl was under a lot of pressure and it's verified when the referee says "I was NERVOUS!!!"

Here's 3 CLIPS from 'Billiard's Perfect Miss' - Jay, the "Million Dollar Tournament Director"....in his own words.

Earl is a Pool Genius....Mad Genius, but Genius None the Less - click this link

Earl was in a BAD SPOT, I Thought it was OVER - He's NOT Going to Make This - click

RACKING THE 10TH GAME "I Was Nervous"....I Wanted to Make Sure EVERYTHING Was Perfect!!! click here

Jay hasn't changed much

but more importantly - is that really Jay????

Jay hasn't changed much in 17 years.....except maybe his wardrobe. ;)

Well, I guess you could don something really sporty like that expensive white shirt you're wearing in your avatar!!!:grin::grin:

Maniac

Hey! That shirt is 100% silk and from this millenium! Dang, we're a tough crowd. :grin-square:

It's classy, and professional to see players sporting a suit or tux

George SanSouci competed in several of my events at CJ's Billiard Palace and was Always a Professional Player and Representative, the Pool World Misses Him.

Great to see you put up that picture of George (Ginky), he was a great player
and representative of the game.
RIP my friend.

George will always be remembered, he played at several of our events.

Yes, George, Max Eberle and Mika were all just coming up when we were having all the Pro tournaments at CJ's......they all became great players - it's a tragedy what happened to George....he will always be remembered.

C.J.,

Would like to hear your opinions about what is being discussed in the:

" Anyone else want to see the mosconi cup move to 10-ball?" -----> Thread

On page three.

Until the rules change, nothing else will help.

10 Ball is not the answer to an issues about pool. It would be like solving Bowing issues by adding extra pins.....it's really not the root of the game's problems.

The issue is the rules, plain and simple. The one foul rules have taken out the best quality of pocket billiards, and that's the strategic element.

In "one foul rules" you generally have two options:

1) Try to run the balls in order

2) Try to play safe (duck)

The third option is to "kick" at a ball if you're "snookered".

This is boring, and uneventful. Watching a top player like Johnny Archer run the balls once he's "in line" is like watching Tiger Woods make a series of 2' putts.....BORING!!

It's not the players fault, it's not the commentators fault (for having nothing entertaining to say except try to guess what pattern the player will choose).

It's the rule's fault, and that's a fact....until the rules change, nothing else will help.

That's my opinion and I'll publicly debate this anywhere, at anytime on any channel.

You can debate it all you want by no means does that make you right
Lipstick on a pig is what your suggesting at the end of the day its still a pig
The MC would be a great place to start the climb back to at least some level of TV coverage it just needs someone to make that happen
Americans see a US against them in any sport and it attracts viewers
It's much more entertaining than any Tourney will ever be ,, that's why pool failed because it lacks luster ,,, plain and simple
The viewing public is the teacher

You make some valid points, sir...However, CJ is absolutely correct !...'One shot BIH' rules, completely ruined ALL rotation games. (and 8ball)... Until this is rectified, none of the other things you are hoping for, can EVER come about ! :frown:

IMHO, Texas Express rules, set pool back at least 20 years !.. It has become so ingrained in the younger players, its going to be a real tough sell, to change it ! :frown:.....Case in point, Chris Bartrum..Great player, in his late 30's, and thinks 1Foul-BIH, is the right way to play !.. Were he just a few years older, he would see the wisdom, in what Buddy, CJ, and myself, are talking about !

It ain't about 'lipstick on a pig', its about improving our image ! I agree, a nice shirt, and 'clean' tennis shoes, would help !...Or are we trying to attract the loser kid's, who think showing their ass-crack, is appealing ? ;)

CJ, I always appreciate your posting here but I couldn't disagree more with you on this one, respectfully of course. I don't think it looks good to see players in jean shorts and flip flops but if we want to attract young people to the game, and I think we can all agree we need that. Having people dressed up in suits and tuxes is definitely going to have the opposite effect. I think the golf style clothing, slacks, polos with sponsors, etc. looks the best and gives it the appearance of a sport or competition. Anyway.. back to Jay's shirt.

From what I have read, I don't think Chris thinks one foul or two foul is right or wrong. He has only played with the one foul rules, and is a smart gambler, so why would he want to play by rules no one uses anymore? He maximizes his ROI by becoming good at the rules most people want to use when gambling with him.

See post #17... I don't think many are advocating tuxes !
