Pros not knowing rules at derby-part 2

It seems like this is a reoccuring theme since I posted something like this last year. It amazes me how some of the pros don't know the rules at DCC. This year they didn't really have a players meetling like before, just an announcment around noon on the 1st day of 9 ball. But even when there was a meeting, no pros showed up to it. I am referencing a match were two pros didn't follow the rules and it cost of them the match. I will leave out names because it doesn't matter who it was. One pro used his break cue to jump, which is not allowed. You have to use your playing cue. Granted it was this persons first DCC, but still. That is your job as a pro to know. The other infraction is that these two players made an agreement that if the 9 ball was made in the top two corners, it would be spotted. Again, that is not the rule. That was an announcment that was made. The other player made the 9 on the break in one of those pockets 3 times and spotted it all 3 times. He won one of those games and lost the other 2. The two he lost were when the scores were 4-3 and 8-7 not in his favor. He could have tied the match if he had taken it. He lost 9-7. And that loss put him out of the tournement. So this person who didn't follow rules aided him in getting knocked out. Wether you agree with ther rule or not, you still need to know it and follow it.

I was playing my first 9-ball match at a table next to a certain pro known for his colorful behavior. I saw him concede two games to the guy he was playing. That should have cost him the match, but neither he nor the guy that he was shooting with knew that there was a rule in place that said if you concede a game, it cost you another game. If you concede a second game, it costs you the match.

The commentators said full length break cues were ok to jump with during at least one match. As far as the 'concession' rule. I never saw a non $*#!@!! Player enforce that rule.

At the players meeting they said you could only jump with your playing cue.

i just looked at dcc rules they say playing cue for jumping
they dont mention break cue

While watching a friend of mines 9 ball match he made the 9 in the corner and his opponent thought it was to be spotted. After some checking was told it was a win. But also was mentioned that if both players agreed to spot the nine made in either corner before the match that they could do that also. Sound a little loose in the rules department to me.

I know exactly who you're talking about ... and I completely disagree. It's petty to take a win on that, and if both players have a gentlemen's agreement to play it out correctly, then so be it. Who are you to call someone out on wanting to play the game fairly with respect? Counting the 9 in the bottom two is one of the dumbest rules out there, I don't even know why Derby still uses it.

Because that is the rules, whether they agree or not. You don't see Phil and Tiger agreeing to "prop the ball up" because they feel it is a stupid rule. You follow the rules of where you are playing. Period. If you dont' like the rules, petition to get it changed or don't play. Simple as that.

If the tournament rules state that a 9 ball in the 2 upper corners is a win is it ok for two players to make a change to that in their tournament match to spot the ball? Is that fair to the rest of the players? Should everyone play by the same rules?

If the guy (not the colorful-behavior'ed "certain pro") would have called that rule into play and taken the match...he would've been labled a "douche" here on AZB by many of its members!!!

I agree. Pros should know better.

Meh...

Until this sport actually gets a true professional tour running under 1 governing body for the sport with clear and distinct rules that are the same for all of the events I am not going to be too hard on the players on this one.

This is a problem that takes place when you have way too many individual events out there setting up their own tournaments under their own rules. There is no continuity and the "pros" and everyone else have to re-learn the rules every time they enter a new event.

If we ever get the game to where it actually needs to be with an actual professional tour with a whole year of sanctioned professional events all under that same tour governing body this issue WILL go away.

Somebody used one on the stream unless the announcers were incorrect. Or maybe that was the Bigfoot. I have 'Craft' disease- cant remember a F'n thing!

Myself included.

I was playing a young guy in an early 9ball match at the dcc and he pulled out his jump cue,I informed him that he could not a use a jump cue at the dcc, well he goes over to put his jump cue up and I'm just sitting there looking around at the crowd and I look around and watch him jump the ball with a full cue but then he goes over and puts that cue back and grabs another full cue, well I stop him and ask...did you just jump that with your break cue? he said yes I did. So then I have to inform him that you cannot use your break cue to jump with.I took ball in hand. Unreal.. the number of players that don't know or follow the rules.
He was a nice guy, just didn't go to the players meeting. I didn't go to the players meeting but I listened to it while playing my one pocket match:wink: Some older fellow in the crowd gave him a scolding for not knowing the rules:p John B.

I will say this, Mr Brumback is the only pro that I ever saw at the players meetings when they had them. Kudos to you John. :)

This may be true but also remember this. In Golf, they are playing against the entire field, any infraction can change the entire tournament unless it's match play. Not arguing that pool rules should be followed, it's just a completely different situation.

Good for you on abiding by the rules! And, knowing them! Too few care enough to bother knowing what they are supposed to be doing.

Just realize, that on AZB, because you actually followed the rules of the tournament, you are considered a nit-picking, pull any cheap move to win, non-playing douche with no honor or respect for the game.
