the question here is a deep and important one. is efren reyes good for pool?
the answer that i give is NO!

you see, i see it this way, there is the skill of the person and then there is the person of the person. let me go further~~

if tiger woods was white and rich and played the exact same way he plays, would golf be as huge as it is now? NO! why not? because, the public wanted to see a young black kid stick it to the rich white man! that's what made mothers and daughters and people who otherwise would have not tuned into view golf, view golf. you see, no one cared that tiger was so talented, but they cared that he was beating the white rich men, this was appealing to us little poor folk, to the common man struggling, it was refreshing to see, that a young black kid, could kick the big bad white rich men at their own game, this is the essence of why golf is so freakin huge, not talent, but the person of who and what tiger woods stands for in the world of discrimination and justice.

i raise another question, if the beatles wer'e bald fat 60 year old men without english accents, and picked their nose on television would the world have freaked out so much? NO! we would have said, hey great music, but then the world would have moved on.
BUT~~~~~~ the beatles wer'e cute, hairy, great accents, young youthful with tons of humor, making them the most sought after entertainment act in history, yes their music was genius, but we bought the entire package.

this leads me back to my original question~~~~ is efren reyes good for pool?

the answer is clearly NO!
his persoanlity does not come through, and there is nothing the general public cares about, so what if he is the greeatest pool player ever, it means nothing, there is no "appeal" to the general public. thus, no one cares. he is in deed , the greatest all around player that ever lived, and in the phillippeens, he is GOD,however, in america, he is an unknown pool player who will remain so.

pool needs a women champion, or some young perhaps handicappped kid, something that mom's and people of all walks of life can sink their teeth into, and ask, "is so and so playing in this tournament?" the general public doesn't care if efren reyes is playing in the next IPT event, however the general public does care if tiger woods is playing in the next golf tournament, ask yourself WHY? i told you my opinion why.

where does this leave us? i don't know. it would be nice to fix a tournament so austin murphy wins it ,so overnight, pool becomes something the general publics wants to view, but we just can't fix tournaments, until then austin will have to win it on his own skill, and once done, the world will tune into pool to watch "the kid" beat the grown ups, soon maybe one day we will hear this, "is austin murphy in the next tournament dad?"

Geez Bernie! Where are you coming up with all this? In America, Efren is cherished, esteemed and loved by every pool player. Just because he isn't flashy or doesn't toot his own horn doesn't mean he isn't good for pool! I see him as being the best you can get for pool: humble, cute and self-effacing. He lets his stick do all the talking he needs. The world is blessed with a higher level of pool because he is in it.

Well he's humble, kind, a giving person that created his life out of nothing. He's in the hall of fame, the #1 recognized person in his own country and "always" thinks of others. Your probably right he doesn't sound like a pool player to me, someone else should of been this good, but whom? Boy I sure wouldn't want to raise a child to have all the qualities of a person like Efrem would you?? I found your post narrow m****d.

Erfen Reyes is as good for pool as Bernie Friend is bad for it.

John

I think Efern is great for pool. He comes from a poor background and is a self made man. That is the American dream.

Bernie are you having a bad day?

in the phiilipines he is worshipped like god as he is worshipped by every pro player on the curcuit.the feats he accomplishes are absolutely amazing.whats absolutely amazing is that im replying to such an idiotic post.

Earl Strickland one remarked "Efern Reyes is the smartest pool player I ever met." Now if the most ego driven talent can manage that comment it adds another dimension to the humble talent that we all recognize to be the best all-time player.

he sounds like a racist!

dude your post is the biggest jacka** post ive ever read! anybody agree with me here! you sound like a mad man just rambling on and on!

I'm not going to crucify Bernie. I know what point he's trying to make...though, he has just worded his thoughts extremely poorly.

It's not that Efren is bad for pool. Of course not...he was, is, and always will be awesome for the game of pool. I truly believe he has revolutionized the way the modern pool game has been played.

However, as far as Efren helping out the popularization of pool in mainstream America? That is just an impossible thing for which to ask a quiet, older-than-middle-aged, not-exactly-clean-cut-looking, brown-skinned foreigner who speaks in broken English.

It is totally unfair to compare Efren Reyes to Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods in that respect. Sure, you can compare those three in terms of dominance in their respective game/sport. But you can't expect a foreigner to achieve what Jordan and Woods have done here in America.

Maybe, a more fair question to ask is if Efren Reyes good for pool in the Philippines the same way that Jordan/Woods is/was good for basketball/golf in America. The answer is yes.

I think your brain is so small you can't fit reyes in your head,,Efren is loved by many americans -even the beginners in pool...Don't blame Efren if pool is not that popular "YET" in general american public. But among pool players ,even in america reyes has almost started a cult followers...

Say Austin Murphy is the Greatest player right now,,DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE THAT POOL WILL BECOME SO POPULAR NOW??

You are out of your mind...The reason Pool is not that popular yet like basketball or tennis, etc. is because the major products such as beers and soda drinks and major product companies are not supporting/sponsoring pool like the way they sponsor other games. When thses big companies sponsors pool tournaments then tournament organizers would be able to afford primetime tv telecast..that's the reason you I#@&##tt!!!!

Bernie, I've got to hand it to you, you're not afraid to post what you think.

Is Efren good for pool? Absolutely. He's one of the greatest the game has ever seen, and he's still a threat to win any tournament he enters. The question is how much longer will he continue to win championships given he is in his early 50's?

Now, the question I think Bernie is really asking - Is Efren good for the presentation and promotion of pool to the general public? Up until a couple of years ago, I would have said no.

ESPN's pool broadcasts have relied on the player's themselves to let their personalities shine. The broadcast's have had limited backstories about the players, and the biggest stars are the players that talk to the crowd, get animated when they miss, and wear their emotions on their sleeve.

In the IPT world, marketed properly, Efren can be great for pool. Efren's backstory can be conveyed to the audience by the announcers, which will let his game do the talking. Efren is an every-man that has risen to be a living legend, the idol of almost every player in Asia and many others around the world, and can still win any tournament he enters.

i think we should all lay off bernie - the point he's making is an obvious one really.

Let's not even bring into question Efren's ability - nobody has even come close to it. but the point raised is whether he's good for promoting the game and being a public figure for the game. is he the man you want to stand up as a towering figure to represent our sport? I personally agree with Bernie - he's not that man - imo a Strickland or a Sigel or someone is better suited that role.

However i will stress - none of this is Efren's fault. He just plays the game and that's it. It's not nessecarilly his job to promote the game. Same as it's not david beckham's, zinidine zidane's, or ronaldinho's job to promote and be figurehead's for football, or tiger woods for golf. etc etc. But they just do.

Efren does his best too, but he just isn't cut out for that part of the job. indeed the same could be said for hundreds more players. but Efren's the best, so people ask the question of him.

wow

WOW!!! I am speachless...I have never commented about your inclusion into the IPT out of respect and trying to stick with what my mom told me, being, if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all. Well my friend, you asked for it. Let me ASK YOU A QUESTION....DO YOU think your inclusion, considering your level of play, is a good thing for the IPT, a tour trying to represent itself as a tour with world class pool???? Never mind, save yourself the embarrassment of answering this question, we all know the answer!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!

some food for thought. what if the reason of non sponsorship by big corps is because of the lack of drama, charismatic characters, rival competition ect....... it's all about getting viewers to see their commercials and buy they're product. more reason to watch = more money for them. something to think about.

Ever see the movie One Flew Over The Cukoos Nest? Now I know how McMurphy felt at the group therapy session.
