I first heard about Jim Murnak Cue Cases from the posts on AZ. Wanting to see and touch what I buy, I drove 1 1/2 hours to visit Jim at his studio in Brooklyn. What I found was an avid pool player, with his own pool table on the premises, and whose father was a professional pool player (Jim still had his dad's custom Palmer). Not only is he a skilled artist and craftsman, who does all of his own leather carving, but he also dyes his own leather to the desire of his customer. I was greeted by a very warm man who took a lot of time with me to make sure that he would make exactly what I wanted. When undecided on certain points, Jim always had a ready answer for me. He is knowledgeable, incredibly talented, and understands what wthe player both needs and wants. Take a look at www.jimmurnakcuecases.com His prices for quality of this kind are not to be believed. I am a recent customer of Jim's and I fully agree that he is a very talented man and his customer service is first rate. As we decided what it was that I wanted in a custom case, Jim provided suggestions that went way above what I expected. He provided preliminary drawings for approval, and was constantly in touch with me updating me on the status. His cases are a marvelous value right now, but I fully expect them to appreciate in value in the near future as more examples and customer reviews get out.

What's the turn-around time for a custom Murnak? I would imagine, of course, that the more you want done...the longer it takes.

It was only a couple of months, Mark...not long at all. Money and time very well spent. Seriously, this thing looks and feels as durable as a horse saddle, just such a solid feel to it. I could not believe I got this much case for the money. His stuff is definitely going to go up in value, plus you get to design a true 1 of 1 (not like DP cues).

I would like to add that the thickness of the leather Jim uses is such that there is no need for a 'supporting structure'. There is the Cordura lined tubes for the butt(s) and shafts, and the rest is this crazy thick leather. No way this stuff is gonna sag!! Basically, it is saddle leather, if that helps with the visual at all. There is attention to detail down to the most minute stitch. And I can tell you that my experience has been that the finish on the Murnak's can most certainly take a beating, and not show scuffing...and waterspots are not an issue either. I have been most impressed with my simple, unembellished case.
Rat...I have a non-custom 1x2 in black cherry, and they are every bit as nice as the custom engraved/carved cases. Either way, you cannot go wrong with a Murnak case....I truly believe that the only other case out there that compares would be a Justis.

Yea...what she said. If you want a really great case, either 2x4 or 3x6, just go through the pictures on his website. You will find that you can have a hand made case of superior quality for $350-450 (non-custom)..that is less than many of the higher quality production cases, and MUCH, MUCH better quality. If you want a 1 of 1 made just like you want it with lots of hand carving, well there is a small handling charge...

Well, I don't know if this helps or not, but www.IndyQ.com has some 1x2's cases coming in for 159.00!! I am assuming these will be without the pocket and padded carry strap that mine has (210.00). At that price, you can hardly lose money on them. They have a zipper closure much like the Whitten's...but it is a seriously heavy-duty zipper. I would be extremely surprised if it would fail.
I would like to add that my cue resided in this case all summer long. We had a much, much more humid summer here than in more recent years, and my cue weathered the extra humidity just fine in this case....no sign of shaft or butt warpage at all....which tells me that the Cordura does not retain moisture, and is also not showing any signs of wear and tear.

Thanks for all the nice things that you are saying about the cases. I have enjoyed dealing with everyone on a personal level and that is one of best parts of making them.
As far as delivery time, I have been saying 4 weeks. Some of them do get done in that time, but I have to admit that if there is a lot of carving or other changes, it will take longer although I wish that I could do them exactly on time.

He allowed me to change my order from a 3x6 to a 4x8 mid stream without any problems. ( I thought there were only 3x6 cases, till some started to be posted on his web site). Added a wheel without making a big deal about it.
Never met him, but he did exchange some emails about shading both the carving and the case itself in different colors.
I highly recommend Murnak's cases.
