Pretty wood? No monster, just my jump-break cue.

So, is this kind of pretty wood? Made in 1994, not a scratch on it.

But it does hit a ton, shoot lights out, and breaks like a champ. LOL!

Oh, and one of the two shafts is highly figured as well. Forgot to get a picture of that.

That is purty

Thanks! :)

Here is the shaft. Not a great picture but I found it on my drive so I figured I would add it. Looks even better in person but you can see it's well figured. I have another shaft for it but it's plain straight grain maple.

Stained maple is a bad look for the most part on higher end cues. For production cues, it's appropriate, and can even look cool at times. I think the only time I would ever want a stain on a custom would be a black stain on Purple heart or Ipe.

Here's my "Purple Nine-ball Eater" I picked up from Busboy in a trade. One of my favorite Falcon cues is similar to this but stained bright green with a brown phenolic joint. This is as close as I could get since those older Nick Varner series cues are tough to find. Busboy said he used to call it "Barney", lol.

I hope you don't mind my sharing these pics in your thread, but I figured it was on the topic of stained maple cues, and Falcon cues are close cousins to Joss which I know you are a big fan of.

I don't mind at all. Good fun.

Big JOSS fan? I love my block letter JOSS, but I am not a brand loyalty nut. I do appreciate Dan Janes and think JOSS gets a little bit of a bad wrap occasionally. Janes earned his place in cue history and several great names came out of that shop.

What I really would like at this point, and have for years is a Mottey. I used to drive by his shop almost every day in the late eighties and early nineties. Could kick myself for not buying one back then.

Speaking of stains, what you said is exactly why when I ordered my jump cue from Dan Janes in 1992 I ordered it with figured maple and no stain. All of the others I have ever seen (and they are fairly rare anyway) have been red stained as advertised back then. I have never seen another in natural figured maple like mine.

Yeah, stains like above are kind of carnival side show stuff. But like hot red lipstick on a cheap hooker, it can have an appeal at some level. :D

Purple? Wild...

I always thought it would be cool to have a guitar maker do a "sunburst" finish on a cue. It would be neat to see a cue styled after an old Gibson or Fender..

A lot of the old inlays were from guitar material suppliers. Probably sometimes still are.

Look at some of those old cues and you can see some of the same influences in materials and finishes as you see in the guitar world.

I dig the 70's cues with windows and pearlized plastics. Very cool stuff.

Some cues have been done with wild multicolor staining. It would be cool to see one specifically designed to be a "companion" to a guitar design though.

I usually don't like "theme" cues, but that would certainly be a cool one to see.
