Should tournaments ban the use of ivory cues?

Banned
Lets face it this is a politically correct world and should tournaments ban the use of what is now an illegal item/material?

I can see players protesting to directors because they don't want to be play another player using an illegal cue.

If a player is using an illegal item, deemed by the laws of some states, than how can we trust him not to cheat?

I really don't care but since this is a hot topic would it be just better to disallow an item the government now deem illegal.

That's ridiculous. Let's ban every player that leaves te bar after he had a drink. Let's ban every player that was speeding to get to the tournament .lets ban the guys that don't pass a piss test entering the door. Cmon

I can't see any benefit of such a rule, unless it would stop cue makers from putting Ivory in new cues. I don't believe that is a problem considering the existing laws on ivory use. Why stir it up?

I don't think there is any law out there that makes ivory in a cue illegal per se. It may be illegal to import, or export, or in some cases to buy or sell, but I don't think anyone who has an existing legal ivory cue is breaking any laws.

That said, I own no cues with ivory and I won't buy any.

I say "ban everybody who can beat me from playing pool".

I now declare myself "the one and only World Champion"!

I don't see that happening, what does a TD do if a cue has Ivory that was made in the 80's ? what does that mean for my cue with ivory that has paper work saying my cue was made in 09 ?

Cueaddicts said it, not illegal to own, that comment alone says case closed, close the thread.

No. Tournaments should not ban ivory cues.

The helpless slaughter of elephants for their ivory is being dealt with by the authorities but it is up to each person to decide for themselves whether they want ivory in their cues in the future. We can't change the past but we can take a stand today.

I have been and still am somewhat of a hunter but I don't support the killing of animals unless they are used for food.

Personally speaking, I would like to see all of the cue makers to take a united stand and discontinue the use of ivory in cues. The upside is that perhaps craftsmen in other industries might follow suit and set additional examples of behavior. The fact that the permanent non-use of ivory by cue makers would probably be a B-12 shot in the used ivory cue market could go without saying.

The bottom line is it is up to each person to work out their own salvation.

It's not illegal to own ivory and never will be .. So the obvious answer is no ,

Ban; No.

But just like taking a Class 3 weapon to the shooting range, be sure to carry your proof that you are allowed to have such a weapon that day.

So, don't show up with ivory unless you have to documents to let you leave with the ivory.

Not crazy at all. A famous cue maker got popped so it's best to just keep them away from the pool industry and scene.

We need to get rid of the bad stigma that has been following pool for decades.

It's not just ivory it's other things as well. If we're going to grow the game then we better get rid if the bad.

It is crazy to say that any cue made before the ban is now illegal... I understand the ban and the use of ivory in the future but as the age old saying goes you can't change the past !!

Whoa.....the stigma is on the individual for breaking the law, not the vocation
and besides, Ernie might be innocent......the facts aren't revealed yet.

As far as becoming environmentally oriented, what about rare woods and leathers?
No more Brazilian Rosewood, or elephant leather wraps or ring tail lizard ......where
does it stop and a cue made 30 years ago deserves to be admired and appreciated
instead of being shut away in a closet........There are no EX POST FACTO Laws in
the USA.....and cues with ivory are still legal......so you want to .....what??????

Be Politically Correct About Pool Cues?

Please tell me there are still people on the Forum that don't attempt to build a bridge
too far because this thread's topic is ......well, pretty absurd & ridiculous.....in my opinion.

p.s. Anyone....even a famous cue-maker....deserves to be popped if they break a law. The
solution is really simple........comply with the law and accept your fate if you get caught.

I'm just saying this is a possibility and not that it should be banned.

For the sake of argument...lets say I don't want to play you because of the ivory cue. I protest to the director that you may have something that was illegally purchased.

They will most likely side with me unless you can prove otherwise. There is still doubt and illegal contraband should not be allowed in sanctioned tournaments.

Again in this social climate I can see this happening.

I don't want it banned but I won't be surprised.

They would most likely tell you to mind your own business, go play your match, or suffer the consequence of a forfeit.
