Here are some stats from the single-elimination portion of the 2016 American Straight Pool Championship played October 12-16 at Diamond Billiards in Midlothian, Virginia. These were the 6 matches streamed free by InsidePool for this portion of the event, and they represented 26% of the total of 23 matches played in this portion of the event. All 6 matches were to 150 points, with the first 3 on Saturday, Oct. 15 and the last 3 on Sunday, Oct. 16.

This portion of the event was preceded by a 3-day group stage (7 groups of 6 players), with round-robin play in each group. Twenty-four players -- the top 3 from each group plus the top 3 4th-place finishers in the groups -- advanced to the single-elimination stage. The top 8 players from the group stage received byes in the first single-elimination round.

The conditions for this event included:
- Diamond 9-foot table with blue Simonis cloth;
- Aramith balls;
- triangle rack;
- fouls on all balls;
- lag for opening break.

Attempted Scoring Innings means the player's total number of innings for the game minus the number of innings that he played only a safety or an intentional foul (no attempt to score a point).

PPI is Points per Inning based on the total number of innings in the game for that player. [Note: I call this measure Points per Inning rather than Balls per Inning to be a bit more precise in the definition, since the number of points a player is credited with in a game can be quite different from the number of balls he pocketed.]

PPASI is Points per Attempted Scoring Inning, i.e., points per inning based on the number of Attempted Scoring Innings in the game for that player.

All information is given first for the match winner and then for the match loser (separated by a comma).

These stats make me realize that I caught the two best matches.
Niels PPI was over 37 against Van Denberg.

but the best match by far was Niels vs Alex....
...where they both were around 25 PPI.

I missed the others....the finals seems pedestrian compared to the matches I saw.

straight pool is a beautiful game when played well

as always, thanx, AtLarge

...the finals seems pedestrian compared to the matches I saw. ...

For the final, note the large difference between the total innings and attempted scoring innings. There was a stretch of 12 innings for Immonen and 11 for Feijen that were all safeties or intentional fouls -- no attempts to score. Immonen lost 20 points and Feijen lost 4 points in that stretch.

By the end of the 3rd inning, with Feijen ahead 37-17, they had missed 5 times. But after that, we saw some good shooting. Immonen had runs of 33, 61, and 25 while Feijen managed 52 and 47.
