Hello,

Can anyone help me ID what type of wood these cues might be made from

Does the one on the left look like Goncalo Alves? How about the one on the right, maybe some type of Rosewood?

Thanks for your help! :)

The one on the left reminds me of Massaranduba, also called beefwood (though there may be two species in the same genus called Beefwood). I have seen references saying that Beefwood has been in used cues. If so, I believe they were/are used in some house cues, perhaps a few decades ago. Can you date the two cues in question?

Here is a picture of a beefwood bowl I chose to show because it shows some similar patterns to the cue on the left. I have some Massaranduba point stock that is pretty close.

The one on the right could be the same, or a mahagony, maybe even Jatoba. I do not think it is a true rosewood. Also, I can't see the one on left being Goncalo Alves.

But hey, they could be almost anything, so many woods can look similar if they happen to be pieces mostly void of figure or grain character.

:) :D :)

When you cut it, the center is a little more red than the edges, so it resembles a raw cut steak. I can only speculate that is where it gets its name.

LoLz, eh?

Here is a link: http://www.hearnehardwoods.com/xcart/manufacturers.php?manufacturerid=26

I'm 90% on kingwood (an open-grained rosewood). It could be a Shorea (Phillippine mahogony), but I doubt it. It has a similar grain to that, but most of that stuff is about as hard as pine, and a cue made of it would suck.

It's difficult to identify wood species from pictures, especially if the wood is old, and finished. Most wood changes color over time, and with finish. Even in person it can be difficult due to sawing techniques, and abundant similarity between hundreds of species.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the help folks! :)

I'm not sure what the wood is  Both are old (and I do mean old) house cues. These have only a tung oil finish on them....the one on the left may be mahogany  -- the one on the right really looks like rosewood or bloodwood to me IMO :)
