Are there any cuemakers who don't use ivory?

I hope I can state this in such as way that it does not rub anyone the wrong way... :o ... but, do any cuemakers stay away from ivory completely in all of the cues that they build?

This may sound like I'm trying to start a controversial thread, but that is not my motivation. I'm just curious if any cuemakers have made a conscious decision to be 100% ivory free due to their own personal opinions and beliefs.

To be completely honest about what made me think of this question, I might use this information later on when I upgrade to a nicer jump/break cue. :)

i know one for sure that won't
dennis dieckman
if he chooses to get on here and tell you his reasoning, i'll leave that to him
i asked him why he was so against ivory in cues
i won't try to speak for him
he has his reasons and he'll never change
pretty disturbing story he told

he wouldn't even touch a cue i had with me, when i spent some time at his shop, that had an ivory joint and hoppe ring

A cardboard cue with white chalk for a joint?

That would be interesting.........first stroke it explodes into a cloud of dust and you have a bouquet of roses in your hand!

To each his own.

I take it leather wrap, cases, etc.. don't work either and how did I know before I opened the post that it would be CA based?

If you ship me all the Ivory that you have I'm sure I can find a way to dispose of it. I will also send you a framed (plastic) letter of forgiveness and a PETA shirt (plastic).

:)

Now, why can't I get away with that kind of Moochi-bashing line?:D
My mentor Kerry Zylr does not and will not use ivory.

He loves the newer more expensive stuff we got from a knife show. ;)
It's harder and even hits better ( verified by his expensive cue testing machine ).

If you were around his shop @ Best Billiards you may know me then. I have a couple of his cues and spent some time there. Tell him Dave from Orlando said Hi (Kerry the mad professor) :)

Didn't you order a cocobolo cue about 3 years ago?

Like you said, to each his own. (Isn't that phrase similar to "live and let live"? LOL. :D ;))

Well, then as you suggested, I will go about my own way and choose not to buy ivory. If I am impressed by a cuemaker's choice not to use ivory in cues, why would that bother you?

As I said, I tried to state my question such that it wouldn't rub anyone the wrong way, but it appears that I failed. Sorry for offending you, Ruthless, but if you notice, I did not say that other cuemakers are bad people or that people who buy ivory cues are evil.

Since you asked, I do have a leather case.  I guess I still buy leather because I'm assuming (hoping) that the same cows are getting eaten instead of wasted and dying in vein. LOL, yes, that's my twisted rationalization. I'm sure I could be wrong, if so, I'd like to know about it and I will try not to buy leather. I did try to research that question, but I was unsuccessful. Besides, unfortunately, (IMO) our society isn't exactly set up to make "the right thing" (IMO) easy to do, which is why I appreciate those companies (and cuemakers and people) that go out of their way to do it.

As a side-note, I was buying "cage free" eggs for a while, after seeing the cages that chickens are kept in, which are hardly large enough to fit them. Well, it turns out that the cage free thing is reportedly total BS, so I was just wasting my money. LOL. My point is, I never tried to make someone feel like a bad person for buying regular eggs.

Anyway, I realize there are a lot more "right things" I "should" do, IMO, but yes, I admit, I don't do all of them. If you see me trying to do some of them, and you don't like it because it makes you feel guilty or you just assume that I'm judging you, that's not me taking away "your own". I'm just taking the trouble to try to do what I feel is right where I can.

Either way, I never said I was perfect, and this thread wasn't meant to bash ivory fans. I'm sure some of my friends are into ivory cues, and I'm not going to hate on them for it. I'm a very tolerant person, after all, I'm from CA. ;)

Sorry guys, for my the long post on the soap box. :o I appreciate all of the replies so far. Dieckman has some fine looking "Magic Wands", and his wood collection sounds incredible!

I am still curious if there are any other cuemakers who don't use ivory, as its such a sought after material for cues and yet so disturbing in some people's eyes. I guess I'm in the very small minority at this point in time.

CUEBACCA,

Tad Kohara rarely uses ivory for anything except ferrules. No doubt he'd have alternative ferrule material.
