My new Varney J/B & review

Well after all the hype on this forum, I finally purchased my jump/break cue from Kevin Varney (Varney Cues).

First of all, the transaction was extremely smooth, like buying from an old friend.

When I opened the package, the first thing that stood out to me was the quality of the work that went into the cue. Everything is extremely well put together, the joints are extremely tight and the finish is very good. The cue has an excellent feel and the taper is extremely comfortable to me. When I ordered the cue, I told Kevin that I wanted exactly as he would want it, and I think he took it literally, because he built me one helluva cue! The cue is utterly awesome, In looks and performance. Truly unbelievable.

The only other jump/breaks I have ever used are a J&J and a Stinger. In my opinion, they cannot hold a candle to my new Varney J/B. The first time I used my new Varney, I spent roughly a half-hour racking and breaking.

Immediately on the first rack, I felt like I had a damn cannon attached to my arm! To put it in lay-man's terms, the rack simply exploded each and everytime I hit it!

I spent about 15 minutes with 8-ball racks and failed to pocket a ball only twice. When I switched to the 9-ball racks, I only failed to pocket a ball once, and snapped the 9 several times. I usually only pocket the 9 once a set, so that is HUGE for me.

I am by no means an expert at jumping the cue ball, but jumping with the Varney is a snap. I was easily able to jump at about 3/4" which is very good for me because it is not a shot that I practice very much. I am sure with practice, I'll be able to get that number down.

If anyone is thinking about purchasing a new J/B, I wholeheartedly recommend Kevin Varney. I don't think you will be dis-satisfied one bit with the performance of the cue.

To Kevin Varney: Thank you so much Sir for helping to take my game to the next level! The cue is awesome. I will definitely be doing business with you again. My apologies for not doing your cue justice just yet, but I will. :D

Please see the pictures below, I hope they come out ok. I'll be happy to email them to anyone that wants to see them.

Also, please do not hesitate to contact me if anyone needs additional info or would like to ask questions before buying. I'll do my best to answer as honestly as possible.

Thanks for reading.
Craig

Good to hear, I've heard nothing but good things about his J/B's.

His cues have a really good look to me (I personally like these plain and elegant style cues with no wrap)

Now you just gotta get someone to start rackin em up! :D

Does Kevin splice his own blanks together or use a house cue or blank that has alreday been made such as one from cue components?

Been looking to do business with KV, but haven't been able to contact with a pm, do you have a contact phone number?
Thanks for the info....

Of course I don't splice my own blanks. I think the only 3 cuemakers that do make their own fullspice are Hercek, Bear, and Prather.

Craig...thank you sir for the great review, I'm glad you are happy. I told you it'd be worth the wait.:D

Flats...pm sent.

I think you just highly pissed of Murray Tucker, James White, and a large handful of others...

Was just looking for clarity, that's all... Do you make new shafts or retaper the original ones?

You are right...I did recently see an awesome blank Mr. Tucker has been working on.
I make new shafts for all Varney cues.

Thanks for clarifying, was just curious.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Varney jump break cues work and perform better than any jump break that you can buy! PERIOD!!! I was just recently comparing them to a Gilbert. NO COMPARISON! The Varney breaks more than twice as hard and as for jumping, its not even close. With the Varney I can hop a ball from less than a inch. The Gilbert needed several inches to clear the same ball. I'd never sell my Varney!:)

That's funny, I can hop a ball with my Gilbert from less than an inch just fine.

Does your Varney j/b have that canvas resin ferrule tip?

Id like to know how to jump a ball 1" away from the cue ball. I think it takes more than a good jump cue. It takes a skilled jumper. Anyone got an instructional video showing how to jump that close? ie the angle etc. I know the angle is very steep...and you must use a dart stroke...but its not easy. Even bridging at that angle is very difficult unless you are next to a bank. How many times do you have to jump when you are close to a bank? Rarely.

Someone posted this link a while back, one of the best videos on jumping I've seen. Tom Simpson also has one about the normal jump-stroke.

So am I supposed to be a light bulb screwer in this scenario?! I just posted my experiences with my Gilbert J/B...lol. I am in no way disgruntled. Hell, I don't even know what the word is.
