Obviously you see what deal killers skinny shafts are so here are a few suggestions...
NEVER measure over the tip with the calipers from the top of the shaft down. If the tip is mushroomed it will skew your measurement.
Measure the ferrule diameter, and down the shaft 6-8"
Until you get the feel for being able to just "touch" the wood, I recommend using a sheet of paper and putting it over the shaft so not to dent the wood. BUT remember to subtract the sheet thickness x 2 (once for each side for those rocket scientists in the audience)
If you can't afford a digital, get a dial and if its in inches multiply the number by 25.4
If you have no way of getting some calipers, get a tailors measuring tape that reads 1/128th's and then wrap it around and divide x 3.1415 then multiply it by 25.4
If you are incapable of the above, save us all the trouble and stay out of resale.
