Restoring a Brunswick Jefferson

I was asked in a different post how I did a couple of things so I thought I would start a new post....

The veneer was really loose on all of the legs. The way I did it was to use slate shims to open up the gap so I could get glue behind it. I would use a syringe to get the glue in then used a smaller shim on putty knife to spread it around. I then used a 1x3 the length of the leg to clamp it down. I only did one edge of each side at a time. I used liquid hide glue. The reason being that they used hide glue back in the 20's. Worked really well.

The inlays is where were all the fun is. You need to paint each line with shellac to keep the stain from staining. And one coat is not enough, do it twice. I painted both the white holly and the black strips twice. Took almost four hours to do one set of legs. The stain wipes right off and you have nice clean lines. Finished the legs with Minwax satin wipe on poly. No brush marks or sags. Worked great.

Heres a before and after picture....

Hope this helps....
