The BBC blocks internet connections outside the UK. Apparently they have a list of Internet Service Providers and if an ISP is not on their list they refuse to connect.

The BBC broadcasts the World Snooker Championships, and there are another 14 days of competition.

Over in the Snooker section, http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=60810
a poster suggest the use of a proxy server

"set up your browser to connect via a proxy server.
Here is a UK server that works ok for me.

129.12.3.74 Port 3128"

Could someone expound on the use of a proxy server. Remember that this inquiring mind belongs to a techno-idiot who needs to be instructed step by step.

Thanks

If you are using firefox (which I HIGHLY recommend, rather than internet explorer) you can go to Tools->Options->Advanced->Network->Connection

Then click "Manual Proxy Configuration"

Enter the information you included in your post above, and click "Use this proxy server for all protocols"

Hit OK until you get back to the normal browser. When you connect to a web page for the first time after this, it will show a short page about the proxy server, and then forward you to the page you wanted to go to.

Now, could you post up the BBC page we can view this on?

Oh, I should add that when you are finished watching videos, you should change your settings back (just click on "Direct connection to the Internet"). It is slower to use a proxy server, and things may not always work perfectly using one.

Thank you! This is working for me right now. I'm seeing a link for "Live: Hendry v Gilbert" near the top of this page http://news.bbc.co.uk./sport1/hi/other_sports/snooker/6129894.stm

In IE, go to Internet Options and click on the Connections tab. Click on the button for LAN Settings. You will see a box that you can check to use a proxy server and places to enter the IP address and Port #.
