Jeanette Lee is a talented straight pool player.(yeah she is kind of cute too).

John Schmidt is a talented straight pool player. (yeah, I know what all the women say about his "good looks").

You see where I'm going with this..... While I don't see John as a Bobby Riggs or Jeanette as a Billy Jean King, there are some parallels.

If Jeanette brushed up on her straight pool skills, this match could be BIG with the right kind of promotion.

I don't know if John would have to make out like he is the bad guy like Bobby Riggs or not but that too could have serious promotional value.

Jeanette has been known to beat a few good male straight pool players and she is also known as a person to beat the odds.

What say you?

Joey,
I'll be first in line to buy a ticket. Heck, we might not have to wait that long; I believe they are both entered in the World Tournament coming up soon.

I do think that there is some appeal in a special match; Jeanette's ratings on ESPN and recognizability factor dwarfs that of any other pool player. It could work.

About the only drawback I see is that, since her 8th spine surgery a year and a half ago, she has not come back to more than 80% of her previous playing level. If she could regain her health, it would be a great match; and could do a lot for straight pool.

P.S. - I've heard that the match in which she defeated Ralf Souquet last year was an epic struggle (though no high runs). One of the cognoscenti said it was the fiercest match he ever saw. Make no mistake, they are both fierce competitors.

Could be made to happen

She doesnt have a chance IMO.......

With a little thinking a match series could be worked out that equalized things a bit. I think anything with Jeanette in it is quite a draw. I have to concede that I am a dirty ol' man, I watched that skins match with Jeanette showing a lot of skin . . . . twice!

I don't think that a standard one pocket match alone would work unless an unannounced concession was agreed to, I think that John is too strong right now. However since it would be an exhibition anyway a gentleman's agreement about safety play or some such spot would work. A series would be even better, more like the Mosconi/Fats match ups on TV. A couple of wide open games and short races and straight pool might work. Maybe one set of trick shots which is popular with the general public and which Jeanette does well.

Overall I think the basic idea is great. It definitely would do Jeanette no harm and would be great for John and pool.

Don't think she hasn't got a chance at One Pocket or Banks. Jeanette can play these games quite well. And at 14.1 and 9-Ball she is not the big dog you might think. Her trick shot repetoire is probably superior.

I've heard that Lee was a New Yorker,
If she still is a New Yorker than she could've won the World 14.1 event.

I heard she was pretty good at pool. By thats by 90s standard.

It isn't that she is bad . . .

Actually meant 14.1 when I typed one pocket. I'd like to see a one pocket match too but I think that favors John strongly also at this time.

I have been laying around recovering from surgery since January. Watched pretty much every pool match that came on TV including many of Jeanette's. I have also watched John's straight pool tape over and over. My opinion is that at this time Jeanette might beat John shooting trick shots, I haven't a clue if John has ever tried them and Jeanette is pretty strong there. Types of pool that are broken up into short tight sections are pretty much a crapshoot. However I think in 125 or more point 14.1 or long sets Jeanette gets beat eight or nine times out of ten in a longer grind.

Part of the equation is that John is still very hungry and Jeanette seems very happy with where life is taking her right now, wife, mother, pool player, TV spokesperson, commentator, and yes, celebrity. Even if their skills are equal, I give John an edge in focus. I also think that John is a little better tactician, partially because he works on it far more.

This isn't woofing but if they play anything even that is a longer grind where the better player wins most of the time I will back John for a bit. I'm actually ahead for my lifetime winnings at the horse track and I think my handicapping is sound in this case. Not because Jeanette is bad, but because I think John is a little better and a lot hungrier. If I thought they were dead even I'd still bet hunger.

Black Widow vs Mr. 400

I had the privilege of playing Jeanette at Amsterdam's the first 14.1 she played after her last surgery. After she conned me to break,, she ran 67 balls and only missed because of a bad roll after a break shot. Given enough time and enticed with apprearance $$$$ to permit her time to practice 14.1, lessons from me and DR. Don, she could give Mr. 400 a great match as she is Ms. 175 ( guessing at her high run ). It would feature two of the classiest people in the world and while John may be as "cute" as the Widow, no one has a better heart than Spider.

I would love to see it as in this case, I believe the lady is older than the man. Put me down for 8 tickets, pay-per-view, espn, etc.

"now all you youngsters get out there and play everday so someday you can be a great player and make 20000 a year if your lucky.oh by the way in twenty years when gas is 10 dollars a gallon first place in a pro tourney will still be 10000,good luck to you.lol" that was a quote from 1 of the people mentioned in this post!
you are right about 1 thing! janette is a class act and great for pool!

That 20000 you are talking about in addition to my fixed income would go to good use for several gas stations.

Then again it would be a thrill to takeout some of the highly rated players.

And practicing on the lower rated players would be just as much fun just not much to talk about.

I don't think Jeanette would hold up against Mr.400.With her bad back and other commitments I think John would win without any problem. It sure would be a great match for bringing straight pool back on TV.

Hu,
Excellent analysis; I couldn't find a thing to disagree with.

I would say that shotmaking definitely favors John. In safety play, and ball bumping Jeanette is a definite favorite (I have seen her play hundreds of hours of competitive 14.1). I have only seen John play one competitive game of straight pool (DCC gambling vs. Pagulayan) - and I give the strategic edge to Jeanette; she is DEFINITELY old-school.

If she can beat Souquet, she can beat JS (but I'm going to have to agree he is the overall favorite....unless COLLECTION GURU shows up to lend his expertise in coaching). JS would DEFINITELY have his hands full, JL is very competitive.

Is this a hippie love-in?

I don't know if y'all are just real "politically cleansed" or whether some of you may be smoking too much wacky tabacky; but Lee has zero chance against Schmidt in any pool match, with the possible exception of a race to three, 9-ball.

A better Riggs/King type matchup would be Lee vs. someone like Rempe, or another good player who is quite past his prime.

It took a little while but the voice of reason has echoed through this thread. When she was at top form she had no chance playing JS anything longer than a medium length race or possibly a straight match to 100 or 150 max.

She is a great player and she is great for the promotion of the game but the gap in talent here is pretty substantial.
