What is the best shot you ever made to win a match. Here is mine:

I was playing in a 8 ball tourney on my way to the Grand Canyon. It was the finals and the guy I was playing kept crowding my 8 ball with his balls. We were playing bar rules so no ball in hand. My 8 ball was on the side rail and was blocked by 3 of his stripes. I played the jump bank (jumped cue ball into the 8 ball to make the 8 ball jump off the rail)with the Big cue ball cross side over two of his blocking balls to win the Tourney. It was the greatest shot I have ever made to win a Tourney

This is a shot I remembered very well. In reality I am just a C player. However I always enjoy bragging about it over and over again. Winning shots are always heroic, so please pardon me for a brief show off here :)

About 5 years ago I was in a handicapped one pocket league in NYC. After 16 weeks of play I got into the play off and moved into the final. My opponent Vinni Romano (a great friend and my 1P muse) had to spot me 10-6. Race to 3, winner would get a Capone cue plus some cash and certificates.

The match happened on a Tuesday at 8 pm. Prior to the game we cleaned the table and balls. At 1 am the score was tie at 2-2. At about 1:40 we were done to 1 ball on the table. It was a 6 ball. At 1:55 Vinni shot it into my side of corner pocket and left the cue ball stick to the pocket jaw.

page 1 The 6 got spotted back up. My turn to shoot, I had the upper left pocket.

Page 2 My immediate reaction: bank it toward side pocket and leave the cue ball by his pocket. This would just lead to another long period of bumping balls: obviously he would bank it uptown his side next, and then I would have to do this, and then he would do that, etc... We had already spent over 20 minutes on this ball, not to mentioned we had played for 6 hours non-stop.

Instead, I thought of a shot which I never had a chance to try (which was taught to me by Jeanette.). "This is a free shot," I decided to put on some pressure and intensify the situation.

Page 3 I was thinking of: cut the 6 towards my side with 1/2 tip inside and send CB 2 rails downtown.

Page 4 In the worst case I might miss the 6, the CB went downtown his side and I would spot another ball as shown.

Page 5 Not quite sure how it happened: as my eyes were fixed on the CB moving towards me, the 6 rolled to the pocket very slowly, hung by the jaw for 1/2 second and dropped...

It was a happy accident. I really just wanted to move the 6 towards my pocket... :)

Here was a shot I made to win a cash game in a bar. I broke and ran down to my last ball, but I played position to break the 8 out and missed it, so I was left with this shot. I had no choice but to bank it. On top of that, I was worried about playing center ball and running into my opponent's ball (the 15 in the diagram) therefore causing either the cue ball or the 15 to get in the way of my 8. So I played extreme draw on it, with a bar cue no less and it went into the dead center of the pocket. People actually clapped.


Note: My opponent still had all 7 of his striped balls left on the table, but I don't remember where the other 5 were and they are irrelevant in this diagram because none of them were obstructing my shot in any way.

Yokel, was this luck? You couldn't have possibly been playing this. Was this a cross-side bank shot attempt?
 
Dan did you use extreme left english to make that shot because from that corner hitting that close to the side will bring you to the corner that you made the 1 ball. To widen the angle that much you would almost have to curve the ball just to hit the 1

I knew that the 2-ball would be close to the side pocket.. and also knew I could draw/slide the cueball to the bottom rail for the 8.... at least leaving him a tough shot/bank if the 2 didn't go.

I will say I DO practice this very shot from many angles... and my friends think I'm nuts for trying it. What I find amazing is how often I make it.

One of my best shots ever

8 Ball, call your pocket, ball in hand

During this match, I had made several bank shots, not missing one. On my last ball I had called and made a nice under angle bank shot that required side spin english on the Q, a tough shot. Unfortunately it left me with no shot on the 8 and I had to play a safe. My opponent played a beautiful safe and was congratulated by all members of his team. I was on the 8 and my opponent had 3 or 4 balls remaining. The Q ball was near the bottom rail with the 8 near the center of the table. I was blocked every direction except shooting the entire length of the table and kicking off the top end rail to make the hit. I called the 8 in the bottom left corner pocket. One of the other team said "in your dreams." I said "no problem, just watch". With the smoothest stroke I could muster (trying to avoid any side english) I shot the Q ball the length of the table to the top rail at the perfect angle to make a kick hit on the 8 which rolled into the bottom left corner pocket as called, without hitting any cushion or side of the pocket. It was one of those slo motion shots where u could just watch the balls roll and admire the results. That shot won the match.

I was congraulated by all, including the other team. As I was about to leave, one of the other team sarcastically said he bet I could never do that again. I kept a perfectly straight face and said "yeah, I'd b lucky to do it more than 4 or 5 times out of 10." There was utter silence as I slowly walked out of the room. Later that nite one of the other team came up to me and asked if I REALLY COULD make that shot 4 or 5 times out of 10 tries? They had actually "somewhat" believed me. :rolleyes: I just smiled and told the guy that there might have been a LITTLE luck involved. :D

First one, from a practice game. I got out of line on the straight back bank on the 8, so I swung away and was fortunate enough to follow my opponent's ball in.

This one, I was playing a very experienced (and maybe past his prime, although with some flashes of true brilliance) one-holer a few years back, betting like grown-ups. We had started with him giving me a couple balls, and by this point in the night we had adjusted to me giving him either 9-8 or 10-8. There was a lot of banter between us, and IIRC, it was Halloween night, and I was wearing a priest costume. I shot this a little elevated, nearly hung the ball, and made some comment to him about prayer that made him REALLY irate. Anyway, here it is:

Not answering for Dan but on a bar box for me it does have to curve into the angle with lots of left.

Its one of my favorite kick angles. I got left very near the same shot on a 9 footer. It was on the 6 ball with the 7 at my shooting end of the table. I could see the 6 but I knew I was kicking before I got to the table. I'll always kick at this shot even if I can see the ball.

Slow, lots of spin, I kick it in rail first, shape on the 7 and I run out. I've made this for money and in a tournament. The same guy left me near the same a few games later and said lets see it again. I kicked it in again and run out. I like this shot. LOL

Near my best shot/out in vegas

Late 90's we were playing a team from Colorado. The winner moved on to tenth place. We were behind 5 to Zip when a made a really strong out my second time up.

The team got pumped up and we went ahead. With the score at I think 8 or 9 to 11 us. My game would get us to the hill. I got out of line and had to make a combination plus break out 3 balls on the opposite rail. Geez another tough roll but it was still make able. I made that one but got left another real tough shot.

The next shot needed a firm stroke but I had to be careful not to foul. I made it but ended up with this. Forgive me I'm using the old wei hope this converts over ok. START(

As you can see by the arrows the my 5 won't bank so I cut it in the opposite corner. I knew I'd hit the points. I shot it wit low to keep whitey on the table. The c/b hit the points probably several times, spun out hit across table and spun back to point B straight in on the 8. I can't be sure exactly because I watched the 5 slowly go across table an drop in the pocket.

Of course the 8 won't go so I jacked up a little and hopped over both balls. It didn't take much but I split the pocket. Now the only sad part is, we still lost the match, bummer.

Another one from earlier that night. I broke and made nothing,he ran 4 balls and missed. I tried to break up the 8-12 cluster,and tied it up worse,and left myself here,but still got out. Position A is where the 12 wound up,B is where the 8 stopped.

This one is one of my all time faves. I looked at this over and over and saw NO WAY to make it straight in. What I did was overcut it very slowly to about A,and played the cue ball to come back the middle of the table and planned to leave the 8 on the end rail blocking the 10 at B,while hopefully only leaving a backwards cut on the 9 or a bank with no high-precentage way of getting on the 10,ideally in the area of the 11 which is only there because there isn't a C ball. I called the 8 in the corner to not make it obvious I was trying to set a trap. I'll be damned if I didn't make it,when the 9 was blocking me by a good 1/4 inch. I just shook the guy's hand like I drilled it too. One of the few times a serious roll-off has helped me. I have others. Tommy D.

I was on the hill in a race to five in eight ball. I'd gotten way out of shape for a shot on the eight ball. I pondered the situation and then called this and fired it in like it had eyes!

Cuetable, my shot was similar to yours, but with the cue ball between the first and second diamonds on the top rail, froze or very close to frozen on the rail. Playing in the bottom right hand corner. Had the same shot two days in a row, both to break even for money playing One Pocket. Last couple of sessions I had before moving to South Carolina.
