Here's what I started with. An old Palmer in bad shape. The handle is warp, shafts are junk, and GNS collar is chewed up.

Next, I had to cut the cue apart while trying to save every piece possible. Here's a pic of the butt sleeve. Notice the hidden weight pin. It was glued and then plugged before the butt cap was installed.

Then I had to remake the handle, keeping in mind the original construction and playability. I made a joining pin out of wood instead of using a metal pin, which would drastically change the feel.

After assembly, I made several passes on the handle until I could blend it with the original forearm.

Now comes the fun part. I had to install the new butt sleeve. I used the original window and gold foil but that was all I could salvage due to the color of the "white" pearlite.

Don't let your cue smoke! Here's a close up of the pearlite with a cut to show the difference in color. Ick!

Thanks for posting this, and by the way, you do great work. I have done quite a bite of restoration myself, but I am truly impressed with the way you restored the handle, that is really kick ass, I mean all I can say is that I am very impressed!!!!!!!!!:D Great Job!!!!!

Here's the Palmer after all of the major work has been completed and the first coat has been sprayed.

Nice job "Rat". I've said it before an I'll say it again Rat does good work. If you need simple repair to a build Rat can do it all an his work is always reasonable.

Great Thread

Thank you so much for doing this. I love seeing the progress of your work.
Rep to you.

Nice

I like it Rat. Was that the original finish on the Palmer? I just took it off an old Adams Monte Carlo. I put a wood sealer on it for now so I can keep the original leather wrap. I love playing with these old cues. I have a few. Nice job sir!

Seemed like a lacquer, but there wasn't much left.

Ryan...Really nice job! I loved seeing all the detail of the steps you took! Old Palmers are really nice looking cues...some played good, and some not so good, but they all looked pretty nice, especially for the era! I had one of Jack White's old custom Palmers when I took over his tour. I played with it for a couple of years, and then got a deal with Cognoscenti. After repping his cues for 5 yrs., I got a great offer from Samsara, and have been with them ever since! Nice pics...
