Holly on Birdseye photos needed

Hi!

Hi All,

I am designing a cue (almost done!) and would like to check out some pics of some Holly on birdseye to see if the holly stands out enough. I hear it wont stand out, but to satisfy my curiosity and to get the cue finished, I thought I'd post here to see if anyone happens to be able to have a photo of this.

Thanks,
Melinda

Would this look good with birds eye?

Okay, since no one responded, I should have been clearer in the request, or maybe it really is true!

I don't want to show the entire cue yet (even though I'm anxious to show it), but here is the butt of the cue.

I'm thinking of changing the Brown Malle to Birdseye. Will the holly show up?

Thanks,
Melinda

Advice

Melinda, I really don't know if their will be enough contrast between the two woods, my gut tells me that the contrast may be helped with some good veneer choices. Also, you may get more response from the "ask the cuemaker" section.

I do like that butt design though. Best of luck and please post pics of the final version.

By the way, I have a custom Norwela on the way that should be ready by the third week of this month, so keep your eyes peeled.

Thanks, Jeffrey - I appreciate your thoughts.

I'll look for your cue soon, too!

It depends on what look you are looking for. I have been doing dark on dark and light on light to make you really look at the cue to see the detail. It is sneaky. I think bird and holly would be fine but I am a little goofy like that.

I have a funny feeling I should just show the entire cue, and see what everyone says... ugh, I'm so torn!

Thanks for the reply!

Hi Melinda,

I have a couple of pics of a BEM and ivory cue that might give you the idea. It's actually better looking than it's ebony and ivory "twin". The pics are too big for the forum. If you'll PM me your email address, I'll be glad to send them to you...

Regards,

Steve

PM sent. Thanks!

You're welcome Melinda, what part of Texas are you from? I live in the norwest corner of La in Shreveport.

Holly has a very ivory-like look to it...up close you can see the wood grain...from a distance it does look like ivory....

These cues are beautiful! If Steve gives me the okay to resize them, I'll post them here. WOW!

They do have veeners on them, which Jeffrey suggested might help me. Hmmm...

I live just south of the Dallas-Fort Worth area, since 2000. But grew up in San Antonio (and even lived in Jacksonville, FL for two years from 1998-2000).

I see that - the cuemaker that designed my cue put some scrap holly and bird together to show me how it might look and I saw it just now - I can see the wood grain when I zoomed in to see the the photo better.

With his "mock up," I don't see that I can go with the birds eye. :( I think it would make the cue look a little more feminine for me, though. Hmm....

For what it's worth, birdseye with holly v-points would hit too soft for my liking.

I don't want to post the picture only from Bryan Mordt's site, so I'll give you the link for it - the Holly on BEM picture is on the top left corner. I think it looks great :-)

Unless you have the Birdseye stained fairly dark there will be no contrast and if you want the inlay to show --- it won't - atleast not well. Use a dark wood for the inlay or change the butt wood to a dark wood.

look at the following example, the ivory looks great on stained maple forearm. But I think the ebony helps. FYI.

It does look great! I think the key is the veneers... but wow, what a beautiful looking cue!

Thank you for the link. :)

Thanks, Jack. I am beginning to see I shouldn't change the butt wood to birdseye.

Good example... you are right, it's the ebony that helps.

Thank you for the photo!
