what material and installation method (capped vs uncapped) would be recommended for most effectively eliminating the tink/ping sound? in addition i also like a softer hit.

thanks.

provided everything else is solid.

Provided everything else is solid, a titan ferrule and a soft or medium soft tip of your choice, should do the trick.

i did read on here that titan is a pretty soft material. what about ABS? what kind of resonence properties does it have? i knowmr varney experimented with coring cues with this to try and quit them down. also, would you recomend going capped or uncapped on the ferrule?

*edit: looking at the atlas website, i think i answered my own question regarding titan ferrules, looks like they can only be dine uncapped. but in regards to other materials, like abs, capped or uncapped.

You want soft but are concerned with reasonance?
ABS is very soft too and does not make much sound either.
Uncapped will have a harder hit.

in my experiance an uncapped ferrule hits softer than a capped ferrule..

capped is slightly more muffled, and i disagree with Titan being your choice.i think they hit hard and they also make noise on extreme english shots.

so hit quality/type aside, the consensus for quite hit, especially when applying spin/english, would be capped abs? would wall width (thin/think wall) make much a of a differance?

The soft tip such as elk master will do more to quiten the hit, more so than the ferrule. ABS uncapped would be a good choice.

I'm gonna go out on a limb, and say that although I may have just got a bad piece of rod, and/or had a bad first time experience with the stuff, that I'm not a fan of titan. My choice would probably be ABS, and as far as tips, there are a few choices, but I'm not a fan of Elkmasters either. My tip choice, would probably be a triangle. Not quite as soft as elkmasters, but that doesn't seem to bother the customers I have that like softer tips. I've had alot of good feedback on the triangles.

I'm constantly trying new things with My own ferrules and tips on My playing cues too, and My latest combination is a softer ferrule, but Med/hard layered tip. I'm really playing alot better with this combo since I got use to It. It took a couple of months though, before that I was using a hard ferrule and hard tip, so the change was a drastic one at first.:)

Oh I forgot about the MP Ivory for an option. If done right with the right combination, then They can be a decent softer ferrule also.:)

Titan hits hard as a rock, and is garbage imo. Do yourself a favor and skip it. I like elk master tips, but if you want a soft tip that doesn't mushroom, give the Talisman Soft (layered) a try. I'm pretty pleased with it.

thanks for all the responses. really, softness of hit is only a secondary characteristic i'm looking for. The primary characteristic i am looking for is the sound that resonates, basically i don't want any "ping", "tink", "think", or "thunk". from reading in anouther thread, here:

So what does Micarta have going for it. Is it the hardness, the rarity, easy to work with?

A very soft but yet extremely lively hit. No "tink"....;)

the old micarta was good for these properties, but since its alittle hard to come by, and expensive at that, i think i'm gonna try out a capped ABS with a sniper tip. though more opinions are always welcome as it seems to be a toss up so far between capped and uncapped and i still have yet to hear any opinions on thickwall or thinwall.

i thought titan was pretty hard myself. cleans up nice.
ivory x is nice too. i got about 10 from a guy that didnt know what they were and i like them. atleast i think its ivory x:D

I just replaced a ferrule that was loose. It made a tink noise. I put on a lbm ferrule and it still tinks. The old one when the tip was removed , just unscrewed. The new one was glued and screwed on.
I am using a Talisman hard tip, and there is still a tink. Although this tink is a little lower pitch than the previous tink. Is it possible that the sound is that of the front shaft itself , or is it because the joint is also loose like the ferrule was?
Any help would be apreciated, and thanks in advance. Neil

What kind of Westinghouse Micarta? They made a number of different types for different purposes.
