Accidentally fired an air bullet?

Anyone ever did that?

The other night I was being woofed at by someone I'd never lost to before. He's an 8 in apa on big tables. Hes not the greatest but capable of playing some. He was talking shit because I was playing bad saying he'll play me for x amount and before I could say I didnt have the money someone who knows me that always has the money walked behind me and i heard "back you" so I agreed to the game (foolish mistake on my part and learned from it) and made it a race to 7 since I knew I wasnt on my game yet a short race would cost me.

After the first game is over im up 1 game and confirmed with the guy that he was backing me and he said "no I was saying for you to back me against him."

At this point I have 9 dollars in my bank with none in my pocket. I just bought a 2k computer, a cue, rent, etc. and have no money and I'm in the middle of a fairly costly set.

I didnt know what else to do so I just kept trying to play ended up down 3-1, then 3-3, then down 6-3 going to 7. I need 4 in a row with no money on an air bullet and hes on the hill. I just focused and ran the next 2 in a row, played a good safe got out and ran the last game to win 7-6. I never told the guy I fired an air bullet, but I was glad I won.

I never really felt so guilty before. Anyone else got caught up in a similar situation?

I don't gamble with other people's money as a rule, and I always know how much cash I bring with me, so no. I can see that sort of thing happening though and I wouldn't throw a hissy fit. What else can you do but trust that the person will pay you back at some point? That is, unless it was a lot of money...then I'd be pissed.

several hundred since his woof was for 1 set. I rarely ever play cheaper than 100 normally and he was woofin it up.

Sucky feeling though since I have never done that.. and then to end up with him on the hill and me needing 4... not very fun .

I accidentally bet $5 a game 9-ball for 8 or 9 games before discovering I left my wallet in my room. I was down by 1 and banked a weird two-rail bank to break even. I told him afterward and he laughed. Usually they will understand... unless it's for a lot :p

What would you have done....

1) if you had lost and he said pay up?

2) if he had lost and said, sorry man I don't have the money?

This is exactly why I have my rack girls take care of my dirty business.

Dont know. Didnt worry about that then while playing and fortunately didnt have to afterwards or now.

Since you thought someone was backing, honestly, and then realized what happened, I would have told the guy and gave him a chance to get out. Then you could have made an arrangement for payment if you had lost. That would be the right thing to do. Everything should be settled before you begin. You are lucky my friend. You should never play with scared money much less no money. You could end up biting the bullet literally! JMHO

I think it's a great freaking story cause it shows you really can play under pressure... I know as soon as I started thinking about that mess with the $$, my game would have gone down so fast. I admire your concentration and ability to compartmentalize!! :-)

that's the attitude !!

Same one that landed me some nice cues cheap and one guy unconscious and profusely bleeding from brass knuckles to the forehead. Not so funny part was the ambulance and police took 20 minutes to respond because it was a pool hall, and the guy was still unconscious when they arrived. I never saw the guy again after they took him away. And no, I wasn't the one that hit him, nor was it the guy he lost to. It was a buddy of the guy he lost too. I guess he just wanted to teach him a lesson. No one saw it coming.

Nice escape!!!! What a rush you must have been feeling. I think the proper terminology is you fired an air barrel. Philw

Yea, but that "feeling" helps make you battle hardened. Here's a quote from Purdman....

That is A+ advice.

So, you were very fortunate this time. You got some seasoning under extreme heat, which will make your nerves and mental game even stronger. You didn't have to lose face or lose your face ( ), so you were fortunate there as well. If you're not comfortable knuckling, I would take a page out of Fatboys book and always have some money with you when you match up. Remember, money is almost as good as cash!:D

Lastly, on a personal note, I'm glad you didn't make one of those "Shooting in local pool room" articles. I and lots of others would miss you if you were dead.

Have to agree...great advice. Would be better to do it while you were up than looking like a cheat after.

I don't see where you accidently fired an air bullet. The way I read your story, you knew what you were doing the whole time. You were not in the middle of the set when you realized you were firing an air bullet, you were up 1-0 in a race to 7. Why didn't you disclose then that you didn't have the money and there was a misunderstanding with the guy you thought was backing you? You proceeded to play 12 more games when you knew you didn't have the money, why? My guess is that you felt you had the nuts, that this was an easy score, and this guy had no chance playing you even. Well looks like he did have a chance, because he took to you to the hill, and almost ruined your reputation by beating you and you not even having the money to pay the time on you let alone pay him. What would you have done if you had lost that set? Would you have asked him to play another, to try and get back what you lost? You say that you felt guilty after that set. I bet you didn't feel guilty enough to tell him to keep his money and that you wouldn't have been able to pay him had you lost. You say you learned a lesson from this, I hope you learned the right one.

I hear stories that to have some big pressure you need to fire an airbarrel, alot of old players have done this,i myself havent.I have played with one barrel, all my money and its certainly a rush.I dont endorse air barrels,i have had one fired at me,i took the guys cue and said its yours when you bring me the money, but it did get heated and almost got ugly.

When you were down, I would've turned to the guy and asked him if he wanted to triple the bet in the next set....just to see if it rattled him.

I was once playing a local hustler, and for some reason he and his clique of hustlers thought I was a ringer. I was losing to him in cheap sets, and when he wanted to double the bet, I said OK before he even finished asking. While he was racking, he said, "F**K that!", and he went back to the original bet. I said to him, "R U sure you don't want to play for more?". He was really psyched out, and was afraid of getting the tables turned on him.

Sometimes, a really strong bluff can freak your opponent out....or at least getting the wheels turning in their head soooo much, that they start missing shots because they are thinking too much about $ signs.
