Pool Bum stories?

I don't mean people who are just into pool, but people who are into pool that should really be focusing on the rest of their lives.

To start, the one I know off,
1. unemployed, and not even bothering to look for work, seems happy with a tiny disability check
2. wins 2 grand in a casino one day, spends about 900 of it on a high-end schon.
3. said schon ends up in a string of pawnshops every week, finally never see the guy with it anymore.
4. guy can't afford a soda if he buys into a $10 tournament.

Any resemblance to a real person is totally intentional, many animals were harmed in the making of this post, especially cute kittens. Oh god, were they mangled up.

There is a guy at one of the places I used to go that doesn't have a job, sleeps in his truck outside the pool hall, tries to gamble everyday, thinks he plays better than he actually plays and expects people to feel sorry for him.

Same disclaimer as OP minues hurting the animals (although I am not a fan of kittens/cats).

Just feed the guy in the parking lot some of the mangled kittens

Shit, he'll be in the grub at least

John Tedder
Not to long ago Tedder was playing a guy here in town. He was a little out of line in the game and was pouting about being trapped, nits, ect.(He was just playing bad and the guy was getting good rolls on top of that) One of the best quotes I've ever heard came from it.
"Tedder I have some pictures you would like. Thier of me, in a ditch, middle of the summer working my ass off as I did for so long. You'll stop that complaining about playing pool everyday."

True Story

Two of my pro pool pool buddies (names withheld) are sitting at the Sports Book at Ceasar's in Vegas. One of them is on the big screen in an ESPN semi-finals match (late broadcast, of course.) The one not on TV is telling the other how impressed he is that he is on the big screen at Ceasar's.

Then, the player who is on TV asks him if he can borrow $300 to get home.

I always wondered......

what they did at picture frame factories.

I know several guys like you discribe. What amazes me are the ones who are 30 still live at home and complain they can't get a break. These guys are sitting around and waiting for someone to come in and offer them 50k and benefits and they would work from noon to 4. This way they have time to get to their league match on time.

Typical

The best player in my home town is in his late 40's, and he lives in his mother's basement.

I would not really call them Pool Bums...They are just gambling degenerates......or Poker Bums.

Didn't you notice the Shopping Cart Only parking in the casino parking lot?

Done it... but it's not like that every time. A lot of the time, I go to bigger tournaments around here, pay my entry, drinks...food etc.. and I go so high in the Calcutta that I can't even buy half of myself.

That's frustrating, but I'm only 22. I don't live with my parents, so it will get better if I get myself stabilized.

Whitey2,
I usually agree with you on most things. This one though, I'm not sure I do. Here's my thinking...

We are all in life. We all have responsibilities and if we're married and have children, even greater responsibilites. And sad to say, in our culture, there are "bums" not just in pooldom, but in poker, bowling, horse racing, etc. Anything in which the outcome can be bet upon is going to have its share of people who have let whatever addiction they have get the best of them and what inevitably happens is they become LESS responsible, not MORE responsible.

So I think a brief discussion of these type characters is not a bad thing or really in bad taste because they DO exist and for the most part, they have made a series of choices that led them step by small step to where-ever they are now. I know there are exceptions to that, but not very many. I'm almost 49 years old. Most everybody I know who fits the aforementioned description is there because they are irresponsible and have always looked for the easy way in life.

A tremendous (and very funny) read on this subject is the great book entitled "McGoorty" by Robert Byrne.

I'd agree it's not very flattering to those that happen to fall in the category, but it's not any worse than any of the "rude cuemaker" or other things like that. There are people who are bad off despite hard work, and others in difficult situations, I'm not trying to make fun of that at all. Heck I spend a year unemployed with 4 kids to take care of, but you bet I did not play pool at that time. If someone does not have ambitions or will-power and uses the few dollars they do have on pool, I don't have much sympathy for that. I promise my next thread will very non-controversial. Which is your favorite Spice Girl or something :)

If they didn't go broke playing pool they would go broke paying their voluntary stupidity tax by buying lottery tickets. Everybody has the right to go to hell by routes of their own choosing.:D

This thread reminds me of a story I heard of the Bum that ended up winning the pool room from the owner.

I can't remember the specifics of how it goes (perhaps someone will have the true full story)

Apparantly this bum began hanging out in a pool room and each night the owner had to kick him out as he locked up. This bum kept coming in from panhandling on the street and would get a coffe or bagel and just hang out in there.

Eventually the owner allowed the bum to sleep each night under the pool tables...In return the bum cleaned the tables and balls.

Eventually one thing led to another and the Bum ends up gambling with the owner...The owner gets stuck so deep he ends up playing for the pool room....The Bum wins and then the (previous owner) ends up sleeping under the tables each night.

Cant remember where I heard or read this.

CORRECTION:

Everybody has the right to go to hell by a route of MY choosing!

Subjects can PM me to find out the nefarious plan I have for their demise...

I get paid travel everywhere in the states west of New Orleans and get more than 50K and work from 4-8 most nights..... Hell if I didn't have a family to support, I'd be matching up everywhere I went. But I guess it's my level of responsibility that helped me to get this job in the first place....
