Interesting, new super-slow-motion videos

FYI, Tom Ross (fellow BD instructional columnist) and I recently filmed a bunch of high-speed video (HSV) stuff. I included a mix of normal footage with the super-slow-motion footage, along with some commentary (i.e., the "production value" is much better than with my past HSV postings). The topics are also very interesting (IMO). Here they are:

HSV B.1 - draw shot cue and ball reaction

HSV B.2 - Illegal "scoop" jump shots

HSV B.3 - various jump shot techniques

HSV B.4 - object ball jump shot

HSV B.5 - jump and break shot strokes and grips

HSV B.6 - double hit detection and avoidance

HSV B.7 - one-pocket frozen-ball spot shot

HSV B.8 - jump shot off the rail

HSV B.9 - cue deflection and vibration

I look forward to reading your comments and observations.

Enjoy,
Dave

I watched all of those. That was really neat to see a angle of pool not seen by me before. I am going to have everyone on my APA team watch the double hit video.

You may want to make sure the opposing teams watch them as well. Maybe you could get your LO to mention the link in his weekly messages.

These vids are awesome. I was looking for exactly this kind of jump ball instruction a few months back. Thanks for posting.

HAHA! no kidding. I have seen fouls called when they aren't fouls and seen double hits go unoticed, and that is with a 3rd party watching.

Doc,

I LOVE these....should be mandatory viewing for everyone.

oh my god. I can't believe this just happened to me. I just posted in the aiming with english thread and threw out a theory and for the first time I said DR Dave could you get that high speed camera to lay flat so we could see a certain effect. Then I go back to the forum and this is the top post, I only looked at the first video and got spooked, that's what I was asking about, almost.
This is gonna look bad for me cuz my guess was about this and I mentioned Dave but I swear on the kids I hadn't seen this post before writing that one. Anyway gonna go back and watch the rest, maybe he'll give me the complete answer.

A lot of people seem to have trouble judging double hits. With a little basic understanding, many arguments and bad calls can be avoided. Although, even with high-speed video, it is sometimes difficult to tell if a shot is strictly a double hit or not. In the cases which are borderline, it seems the benefit of doubt should go to the shooter. If a double hit is suspected but not obvious in real-time, the shot should not be ruled a foul, even if a high-speed-camera might show otherwise (if one were available). What do people think about this?

Here's the video link for convenience:

Glad to see you're hanging around AZB, Dr. Dave.
For the past 5 years, I have participated only on the BD CCB forum. I did this to limit how much time I consume on the Internet. However, lately I've decided to participate on both. The BD CCB has several great veteran posters and good discussion at times, but AZB seems to be much more active.

Thank you for the welcome,
Dave

Joe,

I didn't see your earlier message. If you let me know exactly what you want to see, I can let you know if I have it already. If not, I will add it to the list for my next video shoot, which is planned for the end of the month.

Dave

"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to dr_dave again."

Thanks Dr. Dave!

spread reputation?

Thanks Dr. Dave!
I'm not sure what you mean by your first sentence. Could you explain? I'm sorry if the answer is obvious. Maybe I'm missing something because I'm new to AZB.

Thanks,
Dave

That's some neat stuff. :D

Dave, re: reputation - see the green blocks below your name over on the left? That's your reputation indicator.

People can give good/bad rep to other people's posts - see the "rep" and "bad" buttons at the bottom left of every post. These actions increase/decrease the poster's total reputation value.

The forum code is set so that people cannot just dogpile good/bad rep onto another individual - one has to "spread it around". This is to prevent abuse.

Some people consider their forum rep to be gospel, others could care less, and most are somewhere in between. :P

And how Scott got his so high is puzzling. :p

In my opinion it's a crap shoot on the call!

Dr. Dave ... Nice work and thanks for posting.

The double hits were often difficult to detect even with the high speed video slow motion. I think anyone making that call with the naked eye at full speed at worst is just guessing and at best is making an educated guess based on their understanding of the physics.
