Good afternoon all,

I will be moving south to Kingston Ontario in July. In fact, we are leaving this Friday to go on a house hunting trip.

I plan to make sure I have the room for a pool table in the new house. I can't really afford the Gold Crown V but there is a company in town that sells the Black Crown II's which I believe are the model down from the Gold's?
Does anyone know how they play for a home table?

Another quick question I have. This move will put me right on the border with New York with a bridge near by. This will mean short commutes to places like Albany, Syracuse, Rochester and several other New York cities. Are there any major tourney's that one can go play in or watch in the Northern New York area? Possibly Casino Resorts?

Thanks for the help. :)

Paul, the Black Crowns are not manufactuered by the same company that gold crowns are. Gold crowns are made by Brunswick. Black crowns are made by Canada Billiards & bowling.

Ive never shot on one personally, Mika was shooting on one during the DVD instructional series that Nathan produced "mastering pool". Table looks real sharp, and by looking at their website it appears to be built very well.

*edit* a fellow AZ'er in the Toronto area has 10 of those tables he's trying to sell right now. looks like a good price. thread is here (http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=127401)

Thanks!

I just went to the website and it does look like a sharp looking table. I think that is the model to go with since the company I contacted in Kingston carries this model for Canada Billiards.

Do you have any info on any major pool tourney's in Northern New York State?

Cheers.

If you are traveling to Toronto, Le Spot has a mixture of Gold Crowns and Black Crowns so you could make a comparison.

As I recall, the 9 foot Black Crown weighs in at about 1,000 pounds, and a Gabriels or Diamond would weigh about 1,500, so they all cost the same if you like buying by the pound.

I have a Brunswick Gold Crown III for sale, I live in Toronto and would let it go for 2000 CDN. Black Crowns are knockoffs and don't compare, some people say they play just as good but its still a knockoff.

Our best local hall has 10 9ft Black Crowns. I like the way they play. Not as tight as a Diamond, but very similar to a Gold Crown III. A few in the our hall have dead rails... might just need tightened up. But if you're buying used, I'd check for that.

Nice looking tables.... the top pockets stick up like Gold Crowns and they also have the counters that get in the way sometimes.... If I owned one, I'd make the counters sit lower, so they recessed into the table... would be easy I think.

But, for the same price (or a few hundred more), I'd go for a Gold Crown III over the Black Crown.

Thanks for the info guy's,

I spoke to the local pool guy's in Kingston and the price I was given for a Black Crown II was 4999.00. They did not mention if that was set up and taxes. From what I know of the Gold Crowns I would be looking at more possibly??

Anyone have any info on my second question about pool halls, leagues, major tourney's in the Northern New York State area as I will be a short commute to places like Albany, Syracuse etc...

Hey Chris, is the local hall your talking about a dooly's by any chance? I used to play at the Dartmouth Portland Dooly's.

Cheers.

The Joss tour comes as far north as Syracuse and Utica. In August there is a big event at Turning Stone which isn't far from Syracuse. This site might help...

Look at Upcoming Events.

Nope, not a Dooley's.... it is a real pool hall! Dooley's has some of the worst tables around. I actually live about a 1 minute drive from the Portland Dooley's... have never went there to play except for the MPL 2 point tournament.

Shannon Billiards in Dartmouth is the place with the Black Crowns.

for $4,999 buy a used Gold Crown from upstate New York or the one from the previous poster in Toronto.... I'm sure you could find a nice one in the $1500-$2000 range. Set up with new Simonis should be more than $500 by someone who knows what they are doing (i.e. has installed Simonis before)

Damn. Here I was thinking Black Gold Crown II's....the Brunswick Black/Nickel finish is soooo nice. Easily my favorite table.

I have no idea how Black Crowns play, but if the Brunswick is an option I wouldn't settle for less.

your looking at about 10-12 grand for a new gold crown in Canada...that black crown for 5 grand probably includes setup/del. most places include that in the sale price. Buying new is not the way to go at all...the used market is huge and it is def. a buyers market...esp. with all the pool halls closing down. Here is the link to my sale

If you are looking for tourneys to play in, I run an amateur 10 ball tour that has stops in the Albany, NY area , www.DominiakCuesTour.com , this season is over but the new season will start in September. I will be having 3 stops in the Albany area starting in Sept. Our upcoming season will be posted on the "schedule" page in a month or so.

BTW, you will be about a 4 hour drive to Albany from where you are describing.

Selftaut,

Thanks for the tourney info. According to google maps I am 2 hours and 30 minutes from the Turning Stone Casino Resort near Syracuse and exactly 4 hours and 23 minutes from Albany. Neither drive is as far away as I was living way up here in the North. :)

I ran the pro shop in a pool room a few years ago that had 10 Black Crowns. They are very good quality tables, and the playing characteristics are as close to gold crowns as anything I have ever played on.
I don't think you would be disappointed with a black crown.
