All,

As promised, here is a video collection of Donny and I playing this last Sunday (6/20/2010)

The spot was the Breaks and the Last 5, 10ball.

This is certainly not my best performance. The reason I bang my head against the wall playing with Donny is there is absolutely nothing that highlights what you need to work on in your game like playing someone who doesnt make any mistakes. (Apparantly I need to work on everything. :-D )

While this video is no evidence of the fact, I am playing some pretty good pool right now. :p:p

I do not want to take anything away from Donny, as he is playing as well as I have ever seen him play.

Since I pay good money to watch him run out, I thought I would share this with the Community.

This was recorded with a Flip Video Ultra HD and there is 2 hours of footage. The movie had to be broken up into 10 minute chunks due to youtube size restrictions.

A few more pieces should be uploaded each day, and I will bump this post as I add more.

Enjoy the heist!

Yeah, I agree 100% there.

Believe it or not, this is a dramatic improvement over the last time we played though.

When I hit the ball good, about 50% of the time over this video set, I am making a ball pretty consistently.

I need to start drawing the CB back though. The 1ball always ends up around that bottom rail.

When I hit the ball good, about 50% of the time over this video set, I am making a ball pretty consistently.
You can get an immediate increase in power on your break by not elevating you cue so much. You're wasting alot of energy putting the CB in the air like that.

Also, you may find it easier to get more power with a more upright stance instead of your normal low shooting position.

I need to start drawing the CB back though. The 1ball always ends up around that bottom rail.
Putting draw will kill your speed even more because less energy goes into moving the ball forward the farther off-center you strike it to spin the ball. I've drawn back in 9-ball before on tables where that happened consistently, but 9-ball breaks are less about power and more about reading the rack. It doesn't seem like a good trade-off for 10-ball where it's hard just to make a ball to begin with.

I don't watch a lot of youtube videos but since the Flip camera shows some pretty decent quality of one of AZBilliards favorite professional players, I have been taking a look every now and then.

If some of you are like me and can barely turn on a computer, you may notice that there are some "Settings" toward the bottom of your screen which have numbers running from 240 up to 720 HD. If you click on the 720HD it sharpens up the images quite a bit. You can actually read the numbers on the balls. lol

In checking out some of the videos, I see that Donny doesn't give Bryan ANY air. :D

Bryan, you have a good game, but your skill level can't go anywhere except up. Thanks for posting the videos.

I think I'm going to go shop for a flip video camcorder. What I've read about them you really can't go wrong for the money and I think the quality is just fine for what I'm thinking about using it for.

This recording is an excellent example of the "Quiet Eye" in practice. Note how Donny sets up over the short & focuses on the OB for a few seconds. Amateurs tend to set up over the shot & immediately act. This decrease in focus time compromises accuracy.

What is "quiet eye"? -->> http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0HFI/is_2004_Jan/ai_112104116/

Donny always plays his nuts off every time he is at the table.

This is why I enjoy playing him. I dont want any leeway. When I make mistakes, I want to be beat to death.

I have already seen marked improvements in several aspects of my game after spending time on the table with him. Gambling with Donny is not about making money. Its about putting enough $$ on the line to make both of us try our asses off.

The value I get in return is well worth the cost.

He has always been very helpful, and is more than willing to hang around and BS about what mistakes I made over the evening when we are done.

I look forward to actually winning one night. ;-) and I will.

Walmart has a kit that has everything you need, including the cable so you can watch the videos on your TV.

I would suggest this tripod as the legs are flexable. This allows you to angle the camera down at the table.

It looks like your gonna have to make a ball on the break and get some runouts to beat Donnie. You played good, though. The video quality was great in this match. Thanks for posting it.

Ya, I pretty much have to break and run to win.

If I make a ball, and dont have a reasonable shot, then I end up in a safe battle with Donny. As you can see, most of the time that doesnt end well for me. They guy hits everything.

My 10b Break isnt quite there yet to be able to consistently make a ball and get a shot. We are talking about playing 9 ball next time because I should be able to come up with a shot after the break a whole lot more often.

Thanks for putting this all together in a single link :-)

The dimensions of the camera are 4.25" x 2.19" x 1.17" (H x W x D), so its quite small. The FlipVideo Tripod is also about 3" tall.

I have no issues carrying it in my pool case.

Do you need a special carrying case for the Flip Camcorder to keep from scratching the lense?

I thought I read that the lense is not covered or protected.

The camera comes with a small pouch that will help protect it from scratching. I would recommend picking up something with a little more padding if you wil be carrying it around in your pool case.

Bryan good shooting and contrary to your opinion I think your break is well on its way to being very solid for ten ball. Get rid of the damn magic rack though, that's hurting your control over the 1 ball. That's the only reason I don't use it anymore. It's nice the rack is super tight but the 1 ball doesn't react naturally to me using it. Enjoy practicing with a pro and it seems like you guys are friends so don't lose that over some pesos.

Donny is also a freak, he makes the long tough first shot you usually leave him and gets in line and seems to never get out of line. No wonder he won that Seminole event, guy is good!

Thanks Mikey, I appreciate that.

Its funny you say that about the Magic Rack. When Donny and I first started shooting about 2 months ago, The game was the Last 4, RYO, and we didnt have the Magic Rack. When Donny gets his break working, the diagram below is the result. Its controlled. I like this approach a whole lot more than trying to crush the rack. I try to hit the rack hard enough make the corner balls go 4 rails. After that, I am trying to control my rock. After all, in rotation games, all you need to make is a ball and have a shot on the one.

http://CueTable.com/P/?@4AALW4BEMO3CEEO3DBSP3EBJl4FBbO4GCxA4HBil3ICoy4JA EA2PHmp4UALW1UbqM1UXhY4cBil4cblE2kHmp4kADG1kANY@

My 1 ball was coming straight back. Perhaps I should have gotten a clue and moved a little to the right or left... lol

I am getting similar results with the Magic Rack.... The balls behind the 1 head toward the side pockets, and if you "pop" the break (I dont really know how to describe it properly, I get this effect by elevating the butt of the cue some,) the one ball comes back towards the head string. This is probably due to the cue ball going airborne a little, so the 1 ball can get by.

I guess that I just havent noticed any strange behavior on the 1 ball.

My buddy Ray came back from the last Seminole event where D. Mills snapped it off. We were in Ballys Gym the following Monday at 8am benching and discussing what a freak of nature Carlot is. For all my life, I have never known anyone who can really work out like an animal in the gym and then go play worldclass pool. Donny can. So Ray says to me, how strong is this....Friday night before the event Donny is in the gym supersetting and doing a crazy Chest and Back routine. Then the guy wakes up the next morning, goes to Capones and beats Rodney, Stevie and Archer twice to snap it off.

We talked about it all week. It became the running joke that we needed to channel the inner Donny mills at Ballys.

Ha that's funny. Only thing I don't do is those tricep extensions with dumbells. Reason I don't is because the form you do it in is the exact same way you hold a pool stick and stroke. Could be fine but I won't do it.
