Just wondering why Mike Deshane decided to separate himself from Bonus Ball and also from the ABP. Anyone know?

I thought it was a high IQ, what's this intelligence quotient you speak of? Do you play words with friends JAM??? I am disgustingly bad at it.

Maybe he figured something out and decided to take his chances without either entity. I and others I am sure would like to know what it was if anything. If its nothing then at least it will put any talk to rest.

Spelling aside, it's a good question.

Maybe he's more vested in his job with the APA and is paid better? I imagine Shane said no because he is free to do his own thing that way but only he knows.

So MainPlayer ... care to share?

Mike and I have had our moments but I have talked to him several times recently and feel like we have smoothed things out. My impression is that Mike simply weighed his options and choose the course he feels best suits him in his current circumstances.

Mike will probably show up here and answer for himself at some point.

1. He's done alright for himself this year, I think.

2. ABP can't even tell their own players the truth.

3. Bonus Ball is weird, hasn't proven itself and would limit his options.

I'd like to see Dechaine's response, too, but he may be too busy doing things he gets paid for.

This may be of interest to you, Mr Hoppe.
There was a game called Saratoga, using orange and purple balls....
...played on a 6x12.
George Chenier, the North American snooker champion of yore, tried to
promote it in the 60's....but it wouldn't fly.

I second that justadub. I think Mike has looked at some of his behavior in the past and is learning/growing from his mistakes. The thread he started about himself leads me to believe he does care. I've met and spoken with him (briefly) on a couple ocassions, and I did not pick up on any false airs - or is it errs? JAM? ;)

I also believe Justin draws a fair line in the sand, so him making this post tells me something.

A 26 week Bonus Ball season is a pretty long, big committment. It may not work for every player's schedule. I'd think in Shane's circumstance, given he plays as much or more than any pro player, it seems obvious why he's not in BB.

At this point in my career I felt it was a better decision not to play in BB. I offered myself as an alternate to the Boston Young Guns, but was told by JA that they need players that were 100% committed. There are some great tournaments that go on throughout the year that BB overlapped. I understand that our sport has declined, but not having our top Professionals compete in these tournaments can only do harm, in my opinion. Best of Luck to BB.

I think this should get more attention. The above statement hits the nail on the head! Whether you like Mike or not, he makes a great point. We're going to some how grow the sport by having all of our top pro's skip major events to play a BB. Pry not the smartest move.

... We're going to some how grow the sport by having all of our top pro's skip major events to play a BB. Pry not the smartest move. ...

But what IF BB became a real success -- something that actually put money in lots of pros pockets for the long term? Would that be bad?

What if BB became so successful that it just gobbled up all the current "major" events like Pac-Man? Would that be bad?

Well, yes it would be bad for a few promoters and for many fans who want to see lots of different pool games. But for pro pool, maybe it would be good. After all, do today's "major events" really provide a way for pros to earn a living? Sure, a few guys earn decent prize money in each event. But, as an example, which do you suppose is greater -- the total amount of prize money paid out in each year's U.S. Open 9-Ball event (forget the slow-pay aspect of it) or the total amount of money spent by the players on the event (entry fees plus expenses for travel, hotel, food, etc.)? I'm guessing it is a big negative each year for the entrants in aggregate (caveat -- many of them are amateurs who know they are "dead money" and are there for other reasons).

But BB raises the possibility of actually being a net positive to the players financially. Jobs! Regular income! Stability! Hosanna!

But maybe I'm getting a bit ahead of myself.

Let me publicly state, that I was not intending for my post to be taken as anything other than a light hearted joke.

I have absolutely no reason to think Mike is a Douche and he has seemed to be a cool guy in as little interaction I have seen from him.

The written word can have emotion attached to it that is not there and if there was any interpretation of vitriol in my post, I graciously retract it.

I've met him, and he's not a jerk. I first saw him when he was a pup, just coming into his game. He played in Joss tournaments each and every weekend he could. He traveled with a Canadian Russian dude, whose name escapes me. Mike Dechaine as a young'un was dedicated, and then about 6 or 7 years later, I'm watching him play in the Mosconi Cup. Lots of people come on AZB and call Mike all kinds of names. I think it is a privilege that he comes on here to answer not only our questions but to also defend himself. What other Pro players have we seen come on here and be as open as Mike seems to be with his peers? Give the guy some respect. He may have been a hot head in the past but we all grow up and mature. I think Mike's past is his past and he has had to deal with the ramifications. He has tried extremely hard to face his demons and is winning the battle in my eyes. Remember if it was not for pro pool players where would this sport or even this forum be today. Lets embrace those that try to help our fellow players as well as the game instead of slap sticking one another.

As kind of a newbie to the sport what I find direspectful is when someone posts a serious question because they are seeking knowledge and people turn it into a comicfest. For example although the responses in this thread were funny and amusing it feels like direrspect to the OP. I read posts on here and wonder why users even ask questions if all they are going to get is wise crack remarks. Not everyone on here is a veteran of the sport or this forum and some of us would like honest answers or would prefer to not hear anything at all.

Its all good if BB gobbles up the competition until they go under.

It's a brave man who calls someone a jerk online.

Perhaps those with opinions on a player's character should just heed the adage of not saying anything, unless they have something good to say.

Better yet match up, playing straight up and don't ask him for the 6 ball!

Yes, that would present some discontinuities to the pool world, but it would recover, somehow. And in my absurdist musings, BB becomes like the PGA, APT, MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, NASCAR. What happens if one of them goes under?

Collateral damage MsBelle, the consequences of free enterprise. :sorry:

What I imagine is BB causing industry fragmentation and the dilution of all existing business entities. BB will cannibalize members from a relatively small existing customer base making everyone financially weaker, yet not being strong enough themselves to be profitable.

Generally everyone loses when this happens, the existing industry loses market share with some entities ceasing to exist and the new business fails. But that's what generally happens when the new business model attempts transformation instead of integration, often there's also a reduction, rather than an increase, in the existing customer base as well.

You and I care about current events and promoters because we and others derive considerable enjoyment from them (and we may have some personal relationships that matter, too). But are they serving "pro pool" well? Is something much greater possible for pool?

And, not to worry. I did call what I said "absurdist musings." It's pretty unlikely that BB would completely Pac-Man the current world of pool.

[Some people want something much greater for pool than what we have now, some want nothing much different from now, and some don't give a fig.]

I agree Jimmy.
Free markets always boil down to what the consumer wants. As a PPV consumer I very much enjoy the events and streams that are out there. I especially like to consume very long rotational matches between top dogs. The kind that last a few days.

I have a number of things to say:

1. Mike is a stand up guy. When he has been in Portland, and I've asked him a question, he has always given me the time to answer. He is one talented player and anyone who knows him respects his ability.

2. This thread started out talking about BB and graduated into a pissing match. I use to play APA and then went to an independent league. It was my decision and I had my reasons. Why do I need to defend my decision?

3. I thought I read that all BB matches were in Las Vegas and the season was 26 weeks. Is this correct? Does this mean that one has to travel to Vegas every week? If so, that would be a major turn off. If I don't have my facts straight, I apologize.

4. Getting back to Mike. I wish some of you would cut him some slack. Yes, maybe he has acted like he was immature at times. That's part of the growing process. Might be part of the sharking process also. He comes on here and sounds sincere. He doesn't deserve all of the name calling. As I said, I know him and he is one confident and talented pool player. If you have something bad to say about him maybe you are the type of person who can't stand to see someone succeed and the only way you have to try and defend your failings is to attack someone. Try playing him instead of attacking him. Give him the break and all you have to do is make one ball to win. I'll put my money on Mike in a race to 15. I've seen him do this.

5. I wish the threads and posts on AZBillilards would be more about helping out the less than fortunate. Without boring you, I have learned more from CJ Wiley since he has been posting than from all the books and DVDs I have bought with the exception of his. I have PMed him a couple of times with a question on what he has said that I didn't understand, and he got right back to me. CJ might have something to sell but he sure is willing to help you out. This is what we need on AZBilliards, more pro players giving of themselves. Fran Crimi and Grey Ghost will also answer your questions.

6. Pool can be a real rewarding game personally. When you start graduating from banging balls around and start having ahaa moments and you are willing to put the time in, it's a great feeling. However, it is tough going it alone. I think a lot have benefited from a mentor, some have natural ability and can figure it out for themselves. Others struggle and never go beyond a 4 or a 5 in APA. It takes all kinds. I want to go as far as I can. Being at an advanced age, is a detriment, but I love the game and still want to learn. I really appreciate all those that post with something that contributes to the game. Thank You!

Just wondering why Mike Deshane decided to separate himself from Bonus Ball and also from the ABP. Anyone know?

Its rumored Mike was up for a part in a new TV show playing the part of Marcus , an up and coming professional pool player who works part time in a bar and befriends an aging man who was a pro player himself known only as Skip. Seems Skip lives in agony over the fact that he won the preeminent pro 9 ball tourney several years earlier but never received payment for his victory and goes by the local post office to check his P.O. box daily in hopes his check has arrived. The other bar patrons rag Skip for his unending faith that his check will arrive. Skip eventually gets a loan against the value of his home and opens a video rental store.

And he actually did get paid for his tournament win...he just didn't want
to tell his stakehorse that he lost it at 3-card monte...what a mooch.

LOL , thats in the pilot episode along with tournament promoter Larry Kahnmann who raises Dachshunds. Larry emphatically denies the tournament is going to the dogs .

That's the way these young'uns do it these days. They're looking for somebody to drop their wallet. If you're looking to gamble with them, it ain't happening. Nobody does that anymore. It's a lock or no game at all.

I disagree. it's not just the YOUNG'UNS, almost no one has real gamble. The only guy I've ever seen take really bad games around here is The Sleeve, and I seen him out run the nuts plenty!!! I think he's a ripe old age of 25ish...

See, what happens here is when I reply to a "SakuJack," an unknown entity to at least me, whatever words I wrote will be taken out of context and construed to mean whatever you can create to be negative. That's the way it works here, right? I'm not playing. Sorry.

No its kind of a long story, we were playing races for 500 or 1k and since the pool hall was closing we agreed to shorten a race then the pool hall closed anyway and we couldnt finish the set.

You got forty years on me so am sure you have been a cue caddy for many players because it seems you need the attention. There is a difference in posting in a thread to support it than just posting in it to show you know everything. I do not even look at many threads on here except in the action room and follow the funnypic thread (best thread of all time on this site) but no matter which one I visit I see your name in. If you need attention this bad just buy another dog or cat. It just gets old and I am sure you have more negativity in your system to make sure you get the last word so lets have it.

So you can bash me with this post, stating I post on this forum to garner attention, and if I reply to your negative words about me, I am only trying to get the last word.

It sounds to me like you have a low amount of respect for women. I've been a cue caddy, but I've also carried my own cue. I could play pretty strong at one time, but that's here nor there as far as me posting on this forum.

How about I do not respect c*nts. Yah yah everyone played good at one time just ask them when you see them on the sideline and they tell you the story. I am a bad player and know that I am so do not need to impress anyone. You look hard and keep looking for someone that I disrespected man or woman other than how you think you are being treated because that is your problem poor me poor me. Even with all the time you have you cannot find someone who I disrespected. Why don't we do a poll on AZ for $500 - $1000 me vs you on who do you think disrespects people on this site more or puts there two cents in more when it is not needed? If you need me to lower the bet or bet higher that is fine to.

...needs to go to finishing school.

And Chris Tate stands up when it's needed.

Did I spell it right? I figured you would know that word by heart and am sure it is not the first time you have been called it. Truth hurts right?

wow, if anyone ever called me that name, I would be in their face in about
ten seconds flat. Your comments were more ignorant then sad.

I really don't like it when people get banned for losing their temper, we've all been there and said total assy stuff. BUT your comments deserve a timeout in the corner for at least a month.

Shame on you.

His ban was temp. Upon reflection and the outpouring of support shown for his choice of words I have made it permanent.

This is your chance to speak up and show your buddy you have his back.

Are you saying you decided to make the ban permanent because some members chose to support him? How is that fair?

(there's no need for a Dirty Harry impersonation in your reply).

He was out of line for his word choice, no argument.

I will however say it is unfair to ban him because other people are tired of seeing it happen time and time again. Ban me if you want, but people should be able to "respectfully" voice dissatisfaction. That's what the internet is for.

I think it is amazingly unfair to ban Juice permanently after the fact.

Up yours, asshole.

Will you get banned? You just did the same thing Juice did to Jam. I would like to see the difference in his attack and Juice is attack on JAM.

Yup, many through choice.

Mr. Wilson,

You are normally spot on when bringing down the ban hammer. I disagree with this one. If a girl wants to play ball with the boys, she can't cry when she gets knocked to the ground. I disagree with Juice's choice of words, and would never use them myself, but there have been far worse exchanges here than this, with no ban warranted.

For what it's worth, John Barton was banned a while back because he was in constant confrontation, with several here. Jam has been doing a lot of the same lately with out revocation of her account, which is what has built this bubble. Juice was out of line certainly, but not to a point of banning him. I think a stern warning, or temp ban as what was initially done, would have more than sufficed. I don't think you should punish the man further because his friends have come to his support.

All of the above being said, I still think you do a better job than most mods/admins out there in the world of the internets. This will be my last post on this matter, and I'm OK with what ever you decide, after all you have the authority, not me.

best,

Justin

I know I said the last post was my last, but here's an interesting idea.

Juice vs. Jam, or Keith vs. Juice's horse, for the right to post here.

Loser leaves town for good????????????????

Wilson,

Juice truly is one of the good guys. Yes, he used a word he shouldn't have but he did not mean it in a degrading way to wards females. JAM is rude, obnoxious and manipulative in her postings on this site. She gets in to it with many, many posters here. She had been disrespecting Juice for weeks and he had enough. Juice could have used more fitting words like the "B" word or the "A" word or the "FU" word.

But you sir are acting like an (fill in the blank) to egg people on like this. I realize your job is not easy and sometimes you probably feel like you are baby sitting a bunch of idiots. But you shouldn't go around egging people on with a trigger finger ready to fire.

And what about Tate? He used some foul language directed at the friends and supporters of Juice. But you made no mention of this in your warning / challenge.

Carry on..

Oh I see we can not voice out support for a friend that has been wronged. Or we get punished and he gets punished more. Lmao. You can ban me. I will always stand up for my friends. I have not done anything that warrants a ban.

Actually that isn't why I was banned. I have never been banned for being in confrontation with anyone.

I have been banned for using choice words against others (in retaliation to their instigating and defamation). Those were clear violations of the rules. Simply being in an argument is not a rules violation, unless of course that argument is due to harassing another member which IS a rules violation but which NEVER results in a ban that I have seen.

And I was banned by Mike for making a reference to another forum that need not have been made but was also taken a bit out of context.

The act of piling on even more punishment because of what someone's friends are doing is truly in poor taste in my opinion. But again it's not my website. This website belongs to Mike Howerton and Jerry Forsyth. They have appointed Dave Wilson to be the front line moderator and that's that. So whether you agree with Dave's actions or not until Mike decides to add more moderators or replaces Dave we will all have to just buck up and deal with it if we want to be here.

Unfortunately I can see this action leading to another exodus of good people away from AZB. Truly a bummer if that happens because some of them put up a lot of good posts and are good for keeping the pool pulse real on here.

I'd join you in protest fellows but I have a baby on the way and I need to be able to show off my cases. Plus I like it here despite the edgy situation with inconsistent application of the rules.

I have no dog in this hunt, but this is wrong Mr. Wilson....

You can't decide to change a ban based on what people OTHER than the banned have done, that's just wrong.

When I was first reading this is in a response by someone I was expecting to see that you had shortened his ban, when I got to the part that you had made it permanent I had to take a double take.

I stand for what I think is right, and will stand just the same for friends if I think they've been wronged... Temporary ban for Juice? Still don't think its right, he was pushed to it. But if you truly did perma-ban him, let me be the first to tell you Dave, you are a c*nt.
