Why is it so hard to find information about this event? Primarily, I'm talking about live-streaming. Clicked on their website and it says not available for my area.

Besides AZB Main page: http://www.azbilliards.com/news/stories/10567-matchroom-sport-announces-888com-as-title-sponsor-for-forthcoming-world-cup-of-pool/
Geeze, it starts tomorrow.

Maybe JP Parmentier will keep us updated.

Hmmm, how do I fake my computer address to appear that I'm from Lower Slobvonia?

Agree. There seem to be less interest in this maybe probably cos it is less prestigious ?
Don't like the single elimination and race to 7 format.
Looking forward to some great matches. IMHO favourites to win- USA Archer/SVB , Phil Orcollo/Corteza ,Taiwan Chang/Ko, UK Appleton/Meiling

Can manually change yr IP with proxy IP from proxy lists that you can google but it will be slower using proxy IP or use one of those IP software. :)

Not even Jimmy Wych's outstanding commentary is enough to save Estonia vs Korea, a dull affair with substandard play by both.

Nonetheless, the stream quality is rock solid.

On the other hand, Mr. Hohmann seems to have found profitable ventures elsewhere, winning the Maryland 14.1 championship yesterday.

WOW! A mental error by Tony Drago! Thought it was a foul!

Unbelievable! Malta had a dead out for 5-2 ahead in the race to 7 and breaking before Drago picked up the cue ball (mistakenly thinking Dominic Jentsch had missed the hit on a kick). Instead, it's now 4-4 with Germany breaking. In a refereed match, this mental error is hard to fathom.

Good chance Drago's blunder will decide this match. We shall see.

As I watch this, I find I like just about everything about this event:

1) Short races make for much more excitement, and even more so with winner breaks. Like the Mosconi Cup, it means that there is "late match pressure" right from the start. Every mistake might be the one that costs the match.

2) The shot clock makes pool far more enjoyable to watch. Pool is not rocket science and shots ought to be planned relatively quickly, with the extension allowing for greater analysis on that rare occasion that something complicated arises.

3) Scotch doubles is a great tournament format. I always enjoy watching it at the highest level.

The only thing I don't much care for is the illegal break rule. A few times today, somebody made two balls on the break, didn't scratch, and was called for an illegal break. To me, that's ridiculous.

Overall, this is a great event!

As is most often the case, you are spot with your assessment. And as far as the illegal break is concerned, its sole purpose is to eliminate a soft, wing ball break. By making two balls, it shows they were struck hard enough, I believe, to automatically be determined as legal.

Unfortunately, the rule says a combination of 3 balls made or that crossed the kitchen.

I remember when Ronnie Alcano won the WPC 9 ball, he was pocketing a few balls consistently while using his "soft draw break", so it's possible to pocket 2 or more balls using a soft break...

Yes, and we all remember the miscarriage of justice perpetrated by the soft-breaking Corey Deuel in beating Mika Immonen 13-0 in the US Open 9-ball final just over a decade ago.

I do understand and accept why most tournaments want to disallow soft breaking, but I feel that this rule brings complications of its own that can randomize the results.

There must be a better way to deal with this issue. Too often, a breaker hits the rack hard and still is penalized for an illegal break.

As is most often the case, you are spot with your assessment. And as far as the illegal break is concerned, its sole purpose is to eliminate a soft, wing ball break. By making two balls, it shows they were struck hard enough, I believe, to automatically be determined as legal.

Problem with that rule is I have seen many times a player break real hard, make a ball or two and still commit an illegal break simply cuz a few other balls didnt cross the line.

arps

there are also times when only one ball crosses the line, and the break is fairly hard.

So far no upsets and all favorite seeds won
Expect at least 1 upset in remaining 10 first round matches. Like Phil crashed out last year. :)

With a couple of tables, they probably could've finished this whole tournament in 2 days. Rather than Tues-Sunday. Maybe with the way they have it set up, it helps with online viewership. Doesn't seem like there's hardly anyone in the seats.

And those that are appear to mostly be players..

It is timed for the UK tv audience..

York Hall is a right bugger to get to to be honest and midweek in really shitty weather - everywhere was dead last night.

Great win for Hungary. They showed some jitters in the early going, but the two rail kick in of the two ball in rack two was the key moment. Once they completed that runout and added a break and run for 3-0, they had control of the match and never gave it up. Well played, Hungary.

US survives 7-5. Despite Shane's fantastic return safe on a kick in rack eleven that may have been the most important shot of the match, my sense is that kicking is the US team's weakness. Archer fouled on two kicks in this match and it might have cost the match against the solid Kuwaitis.

We know Shane and Johnny can run out from anywhere, but my guess is that they'll have to play the tactical sequences a little better than this to snap off the event.

Archer's safety game is off. He was the weak link today. They also tend to spend too much time on simple shots and use up their extension too early so later in game they had to rush their shots
If they play the same way and do not step up another gear against Japan, they will be out :D

My thinking is just that this match had quite a few tactical sequences and it is likely that, at some point in the event, Shane and Johnny will get involved in a similar match. When that match comes, they need to execute better in the tactical exchanges.

Still, I think they will beat Japan.

My point exactly. Shane got rest Johnny won a few bucks. Johnnyt

A point that needs to be made here is that the Maryland 14.1 event was scheduled for this past Saturday and Sunday. When it was determined that a few players that played in the World 9-ball Championship in Doha, Qatar wouldn't make it to Maryland 14.1 if the event went off on time, the event was changed to a Sunday/Monday event, and Archer reached the final on Monday night.

Johnny Archer would have been in London a day sooner and would have been much better rested had the Maryland 14.1 event gone off on its original schedule.

Archer committed to participate in an event scheduled to end Sunday, and should not, in my view, be blamed for the delay. He honored his commitment to play in Maryland and that's OK in my book, even though the price of doing so was nearly a first round exit in the World Cup of Pool.

Anyway, Johnny and Shane are not on tomorrow's slate of matches, so let's hope that they'll be well rested and in full gear by Friday's match against Japan.

This match has been a real stinker. How could JL Chang and Ko Pin Yi show so little form? These are two of the best fifteen players in the world. I was shocked that they were only seeded 7th, but it sure looks like the seeding guys got it right.

Perhaps Russia vs Hong Kong was as sloppy a match as this one, but this is pretty tough to watch.

well the 2 guys are amateurs and facing some international experienced players. i dont know how serious they take it but pressure might be high. they both missed shots that just shouldve gone in.

Italy vs Spain should be close. Juan Carlos Esposito showed solid form at the Rio in July, so it won't surprise me if he plays well. Alcaide is a proven killer, a Eurotour superstar and a former runnerup at the US Open 10-ball event.

Petroni and Muratore are solid and should put up a tough fight, but I'm giving a slight edge to Spain in this one.

Bring it on!

Yup, two mistakes in a row by Stepanov. Made a position error, leaving Chinakov nothing close to the angle requested. Chinakov had to play a power draw and ran into an object ball leaving Stepanov something missable. Stepanov hit it poorly and sealed his team's disappointing fate.

Hungary played well, and certainly deserved the 7-4 win.

Taiwan playing on much higher level than yesterday. The Pool Devil and Prince of Pool are ready to win their first WCP

I like the fact that no teams are really dominating with the break. Nine ball racked on the spot (according to one poster) and the illegal break rule are ensuring that, even in a shot race, both teams are having their chances. Yes, the break and run is, at times, the most boring thing in pool. All these tactical exchanges and tug-of-wars, along with all the ebbs and flows work for me. Add that to short race and winner breaks, which ensure that the door is always open for a comeback, and what we have here is an electrifying event. Add to that the exceptional commentary of Jimmy Wych, and this really is a treat.

This is some of the most fascinating pool I've watched this year, and rest assured, I've watched plenty of pool in 2013.

USA - Japan started of pretty bad with errors on both side. Then things got better. Entertaining match with a great shot by Johnny at 6-5. Japan played a very tough snooker and JA kicked it to snooker over 2 rails... and the 9 caromed in! 6-6 break gave no shot and the safe wasnt safe enough. Japan ran out nice with a bit of luck.

Thank you. Oh, man, they want me to download something. I'm not comfortable doing that. :(

I use Chrome + Adblockplus. Dont have to download anything. Earlier in the thread someone mentioned having to download flash, but the pop up might be an ad you'll have to close (or block).

Yeah I agree a radar gun should be used...if the player is breaking at least 17-18 mph (which I'm sure all these guys are) then illegal breaks should not be called.

All it takes is for a ball or two to bounce the wrong way off the nipple and a good break turns into a gift for the opponent.

They had the drums and such but no costumes.

Well, I had to shut down my computer because when I clicked that link, it added SpeedAnalysis, LizardLink, PC Performer, and FFDShow VI. It was doing a scan on my computer as I was shutting it down.

I would advise anybody to *not* click that link unless they are well aware of the items that are being loaded on their computer. I don't know what those programs are, so I feel better not having them on my computer.

Thanks for the link, but I can't load all that stuff up just to watch pool, I guess. Too bad for me. :(

I use Chrome too.
