The annoying squeaky tip shaper guy is way more annoying than the annoying squeaky chalker guy.
At least the annoying squeaky chalker guy has to stop and shoot at some point, while the annoying squeaky tip shaper guy goes on and on and on.
You never know when the tip shaper guy is going to start, but it will definitely happen while you are shooting.

The sounds of a pool hall are music to my ears. The clicking of the balls, the whack of the break, even the squeaky chalker. Music to my ears.

What I HATE are screaming drunks and KRAP Rap music being played on a juke at a loud volume.

I have a story about a chalking incident.lol

Back about 10 years ago I walked into a bar and there was a couple of bangers up at the pool table. (I'll never forget this)
They were some real hillbilly type. And had a few beers. I think?

One guy would take the chalk ,before he shot, and slam it onto the table when he was done chalking,,and quickly whip his stick into the shooting position. And kinda strutted around the table. (like a chicken)

While his buddy. Well,,I don't know how he could do this,,,but he could take his hand,or should I say arm. And flip it,,,, like a whip. Extending his fingers,,I guess. And it would make a noise,,,just like a whip. It was loud!!!
It was amazing . He would do this if he made a ball,,almost every time.

On top of this,,,the same guy had the powder. And I mean he was covered in it.(the hand powder for shooting pool)
It was all over the table,,and all over his clothes. All over his face!!! lol

When he would whip his hand,,,powder went flying everywhere!!!!

While watching these two,,,,,,,,,,Oh man,,,it was like a Circus Ole" act!!!

I never challenged the table,,BTW. Me and my friends just watched from across the room.lol When they were done,,,the table hardly had a spot on it that was not covered with powder!!! And it was all over the floor around the table.

Has anyone ever seen someone whip there arm out like this?? Almost like throwing a base ball,,then ,maybe, extending your fingers,,and snapping them back. It makes a whip sound. "Crack!!!"
It seems impossible. It's not!! lol

First, I think I know what you're talking about with the hand whip thing. It's kind of the same motion as when people who use smokeless tobacco "pack" the can, only with no can. The forefinger hits the thumb and middle finger, which are pressed together, and makes a snap sound. Popular with retards who watched "Da Ali G show".

Second, whether it was intentional or not, you made me laugh with the Circus Ole reference. My wife thought that's what they were named as well (Cirque du Soleil) and it always makes me picture a shitty Mexican circus act with lots of disappointed ticket holders in the crowd.

lol. I knew I didn't spell that quite right,,but also knew that everyone would know what I meant.
The arm whip thing,,,,this guy was really throwing his arm/hand out there.
I actually tried it,,back then. All I did was hurt my arm,,it made no whip sound for me.

What bothers me is stupid people who put the chalk down where the actual chalk gets on the rail.

I didn't think at all about how I placed the chalk on the rail for quite a few years before I wised up. So I have patience with those folks.

One of my pet peeves is the player who starts a conversation with someone not in the game when it's their turn to shoot. And of course the ones that answer their cell phone, talk for many minutes and then don't even offer a "Sorry".

I use my own chalk in a chalk holder but I constantly turn the chalk over that others are using cause it drives me nuts. And most of them thump it down so chalk is all over the rail and makes a mess. I'm glad I'm not the only one lol

^^^ same here. I don't care how geeky it looks, I like having my chalk with me. Even better when my opponent also has his own chalk, then we can take the chalk off the table completely.

I thought the "setting it back upside down" thing was an exception, but I notice it more and more. Annoys me a bit, seeing all the chalk on the table (and eventually on my hands). I really don't understand it.

I agree. Some players chalk a certain way and make the chalk a flat surface, I have trouble chalking that way

There is a nutso methhead who comes in sometimes who puts the cube on the ground, traps it with his feet, and grinds the cue into it like he's an Indian trying to light a fire.

DallasHopps
01-18-2014, 10:43 AM
The cool-guy way of lighting a chalk fire is to hold the chalk on the tip with one hand and, with the cue at an angle and the butt resting on the floor, using the side of your foot to roll the cue back and forth. Best accomplished while holding a cheap, terrible beer in the other hand.

I have a couple guys on my Sunday nite league who do this, not only put the chalk upside down but they also feel the need to tap the chalk on the rail like they have to clean out the dust from the hole. Add to this the guy who has to powder his hand up to his elbow, BETWEEN INNINGS!!, it just makes a huge mess of the table. I am not sure if they are blind or not, but one would think they can see the mess they are making and maybe just change some of their habits a little but so far this does not appear to be the case. When it is my turn to play I just grab my micro fiber towel and wipe down the rails and the cloth, one guy suggested that the dirty table must really bother me, I told him I would just rather prefer not to have a blue shaft on my cue.

Our Tuesday night league coincides with darts night. It's bad enough that those people are loud enough for both leagues but what really bothers me is when they make their way to the bathrooms at the end of the hall and walk around,in front of and INTO you as your trying to shoot. Very annoying.

1. I am a driller. I try not to be, but it is something that's become ingrained in my routine between shots. I can't seem to think without chalking my cue incessantly.

2. Upside down chalk: Used to annoy me quite a bit. Now I just think it's a stupid thing to do.

3. Removing excess chalk (blowing or tapping cue on rail): I actually read in a billiard book (can't recall which one) that you are supposed to do this. Well, not tap the cue on the rail, but remove excess chalk from the tip. Then, I saw a billiard broadcast where Alan Hopkins was providing commentary and stated that the only way to get too much chalk on a cue tip was to glue it there. I don't know which I believe, but I never blow on the tip or do anything else to remove chalk.

4. Powder room: I tend to powder my hands a lot while playing. But that's because my hands sweat quite a bit. However, I never leave a "cloud" around me or turn the felt white as some do.

There is not much that bothers me while playing pool. It is as close to heaven as I can get on this earth.

I like the ones who hold their cue OVER the table while chalking. That really makes the table play better,NOT!! I had a good buddy that had the BAD HABIT of laying the chalk down on it's side every time he got done chalking. Well when he came to my house,I said hey man.. I wish you would put the chalk right side up so it doesn't get all over my table. It about drove him crazy trying to stop but after a few years he has learned. Now he's a good chalker and a much cleaner player.I know It's hard to break out of them ole bad chalking habits but It doesn't hurt to let people know they are doing it cause most do not. Just explain to them what it does to the table...unless you are in a bar..then I wouldn't,lol

Blowing the chalk off the tip

Guilty as charged. :o Though, I do it more out of habit than anything.. sometimes I don't even think I'm close. Now, if I can just get a couple more banger habits ingrained, I'll be set!

There was one bar semi-regular that would drill the chalk.. you could hear it crunching. Fortunately, I haven't seen him in a while and he was really only that bad when he got wasted. My OCD acts up when I see chalk sideways or upside-down. Also, I just have one favor to ask..

Please, for the love of god, stop walking away from the table with the chalk!!!

The only thing I can add to this incredible thread is I hate the drillers, the ones that feel the need to spin that cue tip into the chalk as if they were drilling for oil. It's not the way to chalk a cue, but I would imagine about 99 out of 100 make this mistake. Every piece of chalk in a pool room is nothing but a shell, unusable at even a quarter of its life, due to this bit of human nature. The right way to chalk is to brush the chalk across the cue tip, creating a nice relatively shallow groove.

It reminds me of driving. Nobody wants to admit that they're one of the bad drivers, the ones who don't know what they're doing, the ones who have the record of being at fault at the accidents. Everyone's a good driver, if asked. And everyone's a good chalker. Yeah, sure.

I've only been to one place, in my entire life, where I witnessed people keeping hand chalk on the rail like the Filipino's do. It was so damn messy.

What honestly bugs me the most, is when someone asks to use the chalk I have in my hand. Which is usually my chalk (I hate the drillers). I actually had a guy on Sunday say "LET ME SEE THAT!" and reach for my hand... It didn't end well lol

So much for the kibitzing about the most annoying chalker. How about Earl Strickland, the most musical chalker of all time.

Go to any part of his 2nd world 9-ball title match in 1991 and listen to him chalk. I don't know what tip he was using or what rhythm he had going. I've never heard him do this again. But the sound of him chalking in this match was musical. Has to be heard to be believed.
