"Virgin Pockets" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIutVllgDiM

It's so horrible, that while it's completely unwatchable, like a trainwreck, it's tough to tun away, LOL. You just keep saying to yourself "this can't possibly get any worse", but, "it's like a nightmare" and does get worse & worse.

Some OK T&A, but not worth the insult to your intelligence.

Wow. Women, gambling, and pool tables. If the acting and dialogue were better, it would be a hit. It looks and sounds low budget, of course, but so was "Chalk", and it was a decent movie.

BUT, the acting is horrible! It's horrific if that can be spotted in a trailer.
If people can't even be themselves in front of the camera, how the hell do you expect them to "act."

Here is a suggestion to make this trailer better:

1. Pause at start.
2. Mute sound on trailer
3. Open new window with this link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhHaPBWWSx0&t=541s
4. Press play on both keeping the trailer muted.
5. Watch the movie with it's new, improved soundtrack. More fitting, I think.

Why are there so many TERRIBLE pool movies?

I haven't seen 9-ball the movie, and I likely never will as I'd never pay as much as 5 cents after watching the trailer! It's lika an APA commercial!

Then there is "Stickmen", "Kiss Shot", "Baltimore Bullet" (I'm sorry but it's terrible), "Poolhall junkies", "Shooting Gallery"....Etc, etc..

You know, you could make a KILLER movie about Earl Strickland. It would be gritty, dark, but also inspirational. A rags-to riches-to rags story. You could get some really awesome lines from just listening to Earl talk for a few hours. Have a method actor following him around. He wouldn't have to imitate him 100% either...rather use his own interpretation. Of course they could take some liberties with history as well. Get someone who can really act to play Earl and a knockout supporting female actor, and baby you've got a movie! There could be all sorts of characters in it, crazy situations but it could still actually be realistic, not over the top like other pool movies...Frankly, I can't believe nobody has made it yet! The great thing is, it wouldn't really need a big budget. Real actors and decent camerawork is all it would take. You allready have a guy that can perform any of the crazy pool shots needed.

Anyone with Amazon prime can watch it in HD for free. I should say "try to watch it" because I couldn't make it through it. Only pool movie I couldn't finish. My wife walked in during it and asked if I was watching really bad porn. Yes, it is that bad.

Wow, that was very painful just to get through the 2 and a half minute preview, lol. When people talk about bad acting, they just do not understand just how bad the acting can get in movies, until they watch something like this. The pool in the movie was very laughable too. Just horrible. I am amazed that movies like that (that bad) can even get financed. Probably did not cost much to make anyway though (very low budget).

I really enjoyed Pool Hall Junkies. Yeah, the pool in it was very bad (very stupid), but other then that, it was a pretty good movie, in my opinion. In ways, The Color of Movie was not very good either. The actual pool in it was really stupid (I always thought), but a very well made movie other then that. Can't really compare any movie to The Hustler (by far, the best pool movie ever made).

That's fantastic, definitely an epic film, but I'm afraid it will lose something through the subtitles.

I think there are so many bad pool movies because they keep trying to insert pool players. Lets' face it - pool players (most) are horrible actors. Steve Mizerak, Keith McCready, not bad though.

.... and 9 Ball, it was awful, but with a better writer, real actors, better director, it had a chance, that is the idea wasn't horrible. A tweak here and there, some rescripting, Gina Gershon or Michelle Rodriguez and a good girl fight instead of Jennifer Barretta, it maybe could have had a chance

Yep, $4M to make, and it grossed only $500K. That my friends is why it takes more than 2 weeks to write a script. Don't try that at home.

If you want to see a real movie based on bare bones, try "El Mariachi" which was filmed for less than $7K, all actors were friends or family folks with no acting experience except for one guy and they didn't get paid, and the director sold blood to raise the $7K. Decent movie that got the director noticed and got big budget offers after that one.

The main issue is people start with wanting to make a pool movie as opposed to telling a story where pool happens to be the backdrop.

The hustler was about fast eddies growth as a character with a tragic love story. He just happened to be a pool player. Also I think it's really hard to fake good play playing. Though nowadays cgi could probably make things slightly believable.

An Earl Strickland or Ralf Greenleaf story would be great so long as it focused on their life story and not just playing pool.

You mean you don't like the close up shots of random balls falling into a pocket. Not showing how it was hit, or the difficulty of the shot, just ball after ball being filmed dropping into a pocket. That's about as exciting as watching paint dry. and if I don't care, the non playing pool public really does not give a flying fudge ;)

Why are there so many TERRIBLE pool movies

Because there are so many terrible movies. The Hustler is a great movie, right up there with the best. Happens to be about pool which is a bonus for pool fans. Color of Money is good too. That’s already probably a good enough
hit rate and puts pool above most subjects that movies are based on.

Baltimore Bullet is fun. Can’t say much more than that but if you like pool it should become a better movie than it actually is.

And if you like billiard sports in general and like things that are a bit different, watch this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HmOlvoqJ2S4

I am both glad and horrified this thread was dug up because that was so bad as to be enjoyable but I really wish I never saw it, because I now have a new level of bad to think about. I think a group of 10 year olds with a phone camera can do better. It was so bad that every bad thing just goes over the other till it reaches a density of badness you need a group of scientists to study to understand it, like a bad movie black hole. Crappiness so bad and at such a large scale, nothing can escape it. The horrible audio recording, goes into the horrible acting, which then circles back into more horrible audio and stock shooting angles from a film class, into more bad acting, each thing growing into the next.

You are correct. I was on the set and had a role as an extra. Jerry Breisath was brought in to teach Whoopi how to play. She was beyond inept, almost totally unable to hold the cue straight in her hands. If she even shot the cue ball without miscueing it was considered a good tape! I wish I could remember who they had shooting all her shots for her. I think it was an Asian woman (maybe Cathy Miao) who they colored her hands to match Whoopi's.

For all you pool memorabilia collectors out there. Joe Santos from San Antonio produced "Pool Hall Master", a story about young pool player(Sylver Ochoa).

Has more top players in it, Cory, Gabe, and others. I even play "The Gent" in it, playing Rafael Martinez.

I think it is a must have for pool movie collectors.
