I'm not posting videos, just informing (including Pat Fleming, if he visits this site, or has informers who do).

The vast majority of this stuff has been shown repeatedly on Canadian cable Sportsnet channels, and, I assume, in the U.S.also. The only thing that is new to me is Glass City.

I never meant to imply you were posting this. I know you are just telling people about this. I was just chiming in that I thought this posting of hour long videos is over the top and it really has a negative effect on accu-stats' ability to make money. Pat Fleming and crew are down to doing only the DCC and the US Open nowadays. If they were making great dough, maybe they would be in Reno 2x a year and other events like the US Open 1p. Its really sad that our greatest resource for seeing pro level pool with pro player commentary is being choked off by places like youtube.

Have you seen the setup it takes to film these matches? At the DCC they had one person working a huge TV type camera, another working the control booth, two people doing commentary and hundreds of yards of cabling as big as your wrist going everywhere. The production costs must be enormous. These videos do not move alot of volume. Pat Fleming probably on average moves less than 1k units on average per taped match. When you work in the costs involved, its no wonder they only do two events a year nowadays.

I looks like the person/company that posted all those matches is BCN (Billiard Blub Network) who as far as I know, owns the rights to the content that it put up on you tube (but I could be wrong!)

What part of: "I looks like the person/company that posted all those matches is BCN (Billiard Blub Network) who as far as I know, owns the rights to the content that it put up on you tube"

don't you understand? they own the rights, they aren't taking money away from accu-stats.

If you feel so strongly about copyright protection you should go work for the american recording industry.

And I'm sure everyone made SURE it was BCN before they started viewing the videos.

Why does it matter to you? Even "if" THIS particular youtube user is BCN, all they are doing is servicing the people who have been stealing from them already..

I just talked with Pat. He was totally unaware of this user. He said it "might" be BCN, but there are certain agreements as to what BCN can and can not do with the matches.

He is going to talk to his BCN contact and check to see if all agreements are being adhered to.

I don't think he was terribly thrilled to see "Hours and Hours" in the title.

Wow. Why are you being such an a$$hole? This is quite possibly the greatest thread of the year! I've had a blast wasting my entire Wednesday watching all of these great matches. Pat should take notice and perhaps open a pay website where we can watch these great matches over and over - IMO either get with the program or sit back and watch people do this. It has actualy motivated me to buy more stuff from Accu-stats, so I guess its a real "stake in the heart" for Fleming, isn't it? Give me a break!

Question for you, Dave.. When you were running a business, did you allow people to tell you how to run your business? If I remember correctly, you didn't..

And when you didn't listen to a customer, did you allow him to then steal the product? Didn't think so.

I find your post, as it comes from an EX business owner, somewhat hypocritical.

The point is Russ, that a lot of people have enoyed viewing these matches on youtube and you have decided to play video policeman. It has nothing to do with my business at all. Many people have bootleg copies of my books and instructional material. It comes with the territory and I am willing to accept that.

And when you didn't listen to a customer, did you allow him to then steal the product? Didn't think so.
When your product is made public, you always run the risk of somebody copying it and providing others with an unauthorized copy. Like I said, it has been done with my books and instructional material. That's life.

Kerry,

RussI don't want to download pool videos, silly -- I don't even play pool anymore. (Notice my tag line!) I want to download opera and Broadway clips (and believe me, I would buy them if the ones I wanted were available for purchase). There are things on Youtube that are free anyway or unavailable for purchase, and it would be nice to have them. I do apologize if it seemed my initial post was advocating downloading unauthorized Accu-Stats videos; however, even if I were interested in the videos in the original post, my understanding is that they were posted by BCN, and therefore not pirated.

I do not condone the pirating of anything, and if those are Accu-Stats videos then it is a travesty (and hopefully a lawsuit). I've known Pat for a long time and would definitely purchase videos from Accu-Stats if I still had an interest in them -- he provides a fantastic service and should reap the financial rewards he's entitled to.

However, I must admit that I'm quite curious as to how it's possible to download from Youtube, when it says right on the Web site that you can't.

Blackjack... Somehow I am thinking you didn't have to buy many thousands of dollars in equipment, and pay multiple salaries in order to print your books.

It's people like you who are eventually going to drive Pat Fleming out of business.

Well, what can I say? I probably would be the guy to tell a store owner that kids are in the back stuffing comic books down their pants.

Thievery is thievery, no matter what form it comes in.

BCN may have put the videos up, and they may well be within their rights. But until that has been established, I see anyone downloading or viewing those clips as thieves of intellectual property.

All I know, is Pat sure as hell didn't know anyone was putting ENTIRE MATCHES on youtube, and you all seem to have a massive problem with someone telling him that.

No one has mentioned it yet, but I would guess the sponsers who's ads are running during the whole thing are grinning ear to ear about more exposure for their advertising dollar. Quite frankly, I would be a bit ticked about purchasing a video that ends up being more of a info-mercial for pool stuff with some shots of real pool in the middle of it. But for free, I will put up with the info-mercial.

I was gonna write a big reply here, but it ended up being a separate topic.

I gotta say that I get a laugh out of how every forum has That One Dude who always seems to draw fire from the other members like 12 hours a day. I think some people just thrive on it. I'm not saying it's a good thing or a bad thing, just interesting to me from a sort of Jane Goodall standpoint :p

People will say it's no defense, but the only reason I'm not spending money on accustats right this second is because I don't have it to spend. A lot of people don't have 400 bucks of expendible income. So while I'm waiting for 30 bucks to accumulate in my couch cushions, I'm gonna 'steal' some of those videos from youtube. Right now my choices are free and instant low quality videos or relatively expensive 3-day-wait high quality videos. I really wish I had an in-between alternative, like a relatively cheap paid download that was about 2 or 3 times the quality of youtube even if it's half the quality of a DVD.

Russ, Have you established a fact that BCN didn't put up those videos? Just spare yourself all the trouble since you can't access youtube anyways. just let Pat do his thing since he's the one who knows for sure if it's pirated or not or does it concern his business.

excess, your generalization of people viewing or downloading those clips as thieves of intellectual property are plainly far-fetched, in the eyes of the judicial system and even in the eyes of a common individual. guess you are not aware of the line "an individual is presumed innocent until he is proven guilty of a crime in the court of law". you are simply back to your old habit of pointing fingers again.

In a valiant effort to bring peace to this thread, may I suggest, as an alternative, that you watch this complete match from that bastion of socialism, the BBC:D

It is a funny game, but the final eight balls in a rack, red, colour, and six colour balls in order resemble a rack of 9-ball, except: smaller balls, smaller rounded pockets, faster cloth, faster cushions, much greater acreage, and played with a wimpy little cue with the diameter of a willow twig:D

Only 4 videos of Mark Williams? Bah! Those hacks O'Sullivan and Hendy get all the TV time! And probably all the little Briton chickadees too! But only "The Hurricane" really knew what to do with them...:D :D :D :D

Russ
You should take some of your own advice and let Pat and Billiard club and whoever deal with it themselves and stop telling them what to do.

That is hypocritical.

I have the same problem (I'm using the Mac version). It closes the video if I try to skip ahead.yep, same thing here. I believe flv's are to blame. You can't fast forward it that way, the only means being increasing speed (x4, x8, x16).
That's is one of the reasons I try to convert these to mpeg, so that I can start viewing from anywhere.

Well, what can I say? I probably would be the guy to tell a store owner that kids are in the back stuffing comic books down their pants.
That's a little conceited, isn't it? The observance that you seem to think that you are the only person who would report a "real crime" seems to speak volumes about your grasp on reality.

Thievery is thievery, no matter what form it comes in.
True, however over a period of many years, society has decided that crimes come in varying degrees of seriousness. Unfortunately, the lobbyists for the motion picture and recording industry seem to have convinced our legislators otherwise.

BCN may have put the videos up, and they may well be within their rights. But until that has been established, I see anyone downloading or viewing those clips as thieves of intellectual property.
You are at a definite disadvantage in this discussion, since you can't look for yourself. Anyone who cares to click on the uploaders "home' link, prominently displayed along with the so-called "pirated" videos, will be treated to a very official looking, "BCN" YouTube page, including advertisements from BCN sponsors and links to the BCN site, among other things. It's a polished, professional effort, and having seen it for myself, I'll say this. If it's not BCN, it one helluva ruse, and would fool any casual observer.

All I know, is Pat sure as hell didn't know anyone was putting ENTIRE MATCHES on youtube...
Apparently you're correct on both counts.
First, that's all you know. (is it possible that it's all you want to know?)
Second, I'd offer that one possible reason that Pat is not aware of full-length matches being posted is because so far, I haven't found any of them to be full-length. They look like BCN subscription feeds, clipped to length, with missing games, laced with advertisements. They also seem to be quite raw in production quality as well, compared to what you'd find on an Accu-stats video product.

and you all seem to have a massive problem with someone telling him that.
You can't be serious. OK, maybe the snitch thing is part of it, but I would offer that it's the righteous, superior, and argumentative tone of most of your posts that people are having a problem with. You tend to use the word "fact" freely, however note that you made a blind assumption that the material was posted illegally, you made another blind assumption that the matches were full-length. Both seem to have been skewed, a little hasty and obviously ill-informed. You're just a "Glass-Half-Empty" kind of guy, I guess.

Further endearing yourself to your audience, you're lumping viewers of the videos in with the poster as criminals, which is a little over the top. Historically, it's seldom a crime to observe something that's there for the observing. If a particular online video is a problem (and I don't think any of these are) then the way to fix that is not by browbeating the observer, but to make that video unavailable. If that isn't possible, or the effort is abandoned because it would cost the aggrieved party more than it's worth, then cést la vie. Millions of Americans are forced to make these same types of hard choices every day, we don't need any more privileged classes.

In any case, I sincerely hope it's never a crime to click on an internet link, ever.

Okay, there you go, then.. If it is BCN, then I stand corrected. How the matches seem to be edited coincides with the BCN agreements I discussed with Pat Fleming.

But look at it from my point of view. I expressed mere concern at first, and then told everyone I had contacted Pat about this to insure his interests were being served.

Then, people start calling me a$$hole (that was Blackjack, a so-called "professional".. that doesn't seem professional to me), penis, jerk, etc.

For what?

For telling Pat. It seemed to me that if all this was legal and above board, that no one would have a problem with me contacting Pat. The fact that I am immediately attacked tended to give me the impression that those attacking me thought they might not be in the right.

And I ran with that.

I do know for a fact that people other than BCN and Pat Fleming HAVE posted entire matches on youtube. And those links have been put on the forum. Are you disputing that? And I told people it was wrong. And the same people in this thread told me to get bent. And that does piss me off. And I am not apologetic for it. Pardon the hell outta me if I assume, once a thief, always a thief.

The idea that entire Accu-Stats matches HAVE been put on youtube before, and Pat NEVER knew, even though those were linked on this forum tells me that quite a few people in the pool community care more about their own entertainment than keeping the guy in business who brings them that entertainment.

Note.. Just about every time someone posts links like these, the FIRST thing I ask is "Are any of the links Accu-Stats? And does Pat know about them?", and no one on the forum ever wants to answer the question. Or, if they do, they'll say yes, they are Accu-Stats, and that they don't know if Pat knows or not. And since Pat only found out recently, it seems forum members weren't breaking their necks to find out if they had been pirating his stuff.

I don't think people realize how thin Pat Fleming's margins are. His equipment costs a LOT of money. He charges $26.00 a DVD. Assuming each DVD costs him $6.00 to produce and deliver, door to door, he has to sell 3000 DVDs to have a $60,000 a year income. That's not even accounting for having to replace broken/outdated equipment..

Let's assume 4000 DVDs sold per year is the magic number. That's over 100 DVDs per day, for something like a $60,000 a year income.. That seems like an EXTREMELY thin margin, and that assuming a FULL $20.00 profit on each DVD.

And people like Dave Sapolis say if Pat doesn't put his videos online for purchase, he can sit back and watch them get downloaded for free. (In so many words) Is Dave planning on paying for the bandwidth costs that Pat would incur? Is he planning on paying for network storage of thousands of hours of video? Is he planning on buying a streaming video server for Pat?

People don't realize (or care) that Pat Fleming is supporting an industry that is not necessarily supporting him. Pool players as a general rule, are "broke as a joke". Which means that Pat has to target a relative minority of the pool playing population that has decent money to buy $500-$600 worth of DVDs per year.

Anything that bites into the relatively small profit that Pat makes risks putting the man out of business.

I'll post another post, the other was getting too long.

The real issue I have is with people both uploading protected content and those downloading it.

Granted, that's not the case with the BCN content specifically, but I guarantee a lot of Accu-Stats stuff is being uploaded and shared on YouTube. How do I know? I saw a guy advertising this service on Ebay when I was looking for Accu-Stats stuff.

You want to know what the consequences of this sort of anti-commercial behavior can be? Well, lemme give you a clue.

Given that I live in Florida, that has tons of top notch talent, and lots of matches between top pros, I have been considering starting up a business offering HD pool matches for sale. High Definition cameras are becoming affordable enough to make this a realistic plan. ($4000-$5000)

There are a few pool room owners in Florida that I think would be willing to let me set up equipment and film some matches at some of the Florida tour events. The Seminole Tribe could be included in the deal for some advertising revenue.

I was thinking about bringing Grady Mathews on board to do commentary. I am SURE he would LOVE to do color commentary again.

And now, I look at the fact that the pool cummunity will gladly download a low rez version of the matches, and care not one wit about the guy bringing the matches to them.

And I begin to think to myself, "You know what? This HD would never make money. Not enough people are willing to PAY for the service. Would they WANT the service? Heck yeah! But they won't PAY for it."

THAT's the real cost to stealing commercial content. You kill the incentive for new businesses to provide that content. So the same old established companies get to do business the way they want, because the barriers to entry are too high.

Hey Dave,

You think the young, popular pros have minded getting invited to invitation-only events because they were seen on TV? Maybe it was a good trade off? Hmmm?

The promoters of the tournaments are the ones who make deals with Accu-Stats. The players are going to play on film if they want to win the money in the tournament. If they don't feel they should play on film without getting paid, they can refuse.. And accept the consequences. That's the way it is. Deal with it.

Nope, the reason that you felt like that you are being attacked and seemed so by members here is for behaving like a little 5 year old girl who's fave line is "I'm gonna tell". the idea here Russ is you don't have to broadcast to people here on what you're gonna do since no one here is going to stop you nor will it stop you from doing so. nor would some people here stop or scare them away from viewing these materials. it's evident that you are creating yourself a blackhole. you are just getting much ire from people here. and it seems, honestly speaking that it appears to them that you wanted some attention (no offense). if you are that concerned about Pat's business, you could have just simply told him and kept the matter between the two of you. no need for such publicity here. unless of course you want to present yourself to be crucified. :D

Doug, you don't know anything about me.. When I played down in Planet 9 Ball, the only thing you know is that you won, while I was giving you a huge spot, and I was out of practice. That's ALL you know. You never saw me do anything dishonest. Ever. Not once. I gambled once in a while down there, and at that time in my life, wasn't hitting em well, so I lost a little bit of money. And always paid off. Nobody ever had any personal trouble with me at a pool hall. Anywhere.

Anything other than that that you know is because I said it on here.

Russ, since you are so concerned, you should be delighted that the clips are being posted here.

Anyone who wants to compile a list of billiard links purportedly in violation of copyright need only search "video" on this site. This site is a force for good. Beats the hell out of trying to find the stuff on youtube, wading through all the crap that is posted there.:D

By your own admission, Pat was oblivious to what was being put up on youtube.

You keep complaining about the gutting of video sales. But the videos are also on sports networks, attracting advertising dollars, and, presumably, earning money for the producer. One wonders which is the more lucrative - broadcast rights or video sales? But if billiards attracts viewers on TV, one suspects that they want to watch current competitions, not ancient history. Perhaps the best use of old videos is promotion. Certainly it took a lot of horsepower to put up all those long videos in such a short period of time.

Just combine them all and call it the Degenerate Gamblers Network.

DGN would be a great network appealing to men between the ages of 18 and 100.

Thats one hell of a demographic.

Nooooooo.. What I DID, is ask if anyone knew whether Pat was aware of these videos.. And then I told the board I gave him a heads up about these videos.. Then I was attacked.. When people started attacking me, then I thought to myself, "Well heck, if these people thought they were doing the right thing, they wouldn't attack me for giving Pat a heads up.".

People started calling me an a$$hole, jerk, penis, and myriad other names for doing nothing more than telling Pat his videos were up on YouTube. Now, with that being ALL I did, and recieving that kind of response, what sort of reason would I have for thinking the links were a legitimate source.

They may be.. But that still did not justify the way people responded to me for being what they deemed a "tattle tale". (Yes, someone actually said that..)

Ok let's be realistic here guys, especially you Russ. here is the fact or merit of the discussion. you were not able to watch the video, which you think violates the rules of copyright laws. it's like saying that you're a judge that puts every person behind bars without the benefit of a fair trial in which evidences are presented. even a judge is not allowed to make blind conclusions, otherwise he is disbarred from judicial practice for extreme prejudice. the thing is, you are acting like a judge, in which you are not by the way. your intentions are good, but in the wrong way of showing it and people notice that.

Now here is the thing about the supposed videos, I saw some of it , but not all of it. what I think (as a logical individual) of the video is that it is like of a normal tv programme. ads were included on those videos I saw. now, we are in the modern era 2000 where the most powerful and influential tool for advertising is the internet. and more people are hooked in the internet now than on the television. the tv ads are thing of the past, so it is more logical that advertisers endorse their product in a new form of medium, where it is easily accessed and viewed. it is apparent that a lot of people access youtube and the advertisers took notice of this. and took advantage of this opportunity to endorse their goods. I can assure you Russ that if the youtube management saw something that violates copyright laws, they'll be the first one to take down those videos and ban that uploader for good. I knew some people who got their videos removed by the youtube management becoz of copyright violations.

I believe that those videos are for promotional purposes because I "SAW" them.

product endorsements have evolved thru many decades. first the use of the radio, then the television, and now the internet. this is the modern era and people evolved as well from cave dwelling to intellect gathering. a person who doesn't think of this and had his way or the highway attitude is more of a caveman !

Hi, Just to note, I typically have no problems with youtube videos. I
am on Linux, and run an older version of the flash player, since the newer
one does not work with my sound drivers. Anyway I tried the newer one,
and even rebooted into windows 98 where I have never had a problem
with flash, and that youtube video would still NOT play.

It basically just shows that circle of dots, like it is loading, and the
status bar will say one of these 3 things:

Waiting for lax-v73.lax.youtube.com
Waiting for lax-v74.lax.youtube.com
Waiting for youtube.com

In all cases, I am able to ping those hosts with no problem.
Perhaps you are on the right track though, and that video was
encoded differently than the others, perhaps making it incompatible
with some versions of some software.

I assume you (or anyone) can watch it OK, right?

all the video links that you posted work just fine. you say that you were able to view the other parts, except for those two. try to refresh youtube, particularly that link over and over again. if it's still doesn't work, it's having a problem on trying to connect to that particular clip. it is either youtube's network or yours. I sometimes encounter that similar problem, not on youtube but another site. just to wait a few days before I'll be able to access it. could be traffic you know. give it some days off and hope it would work.. ;)

Wow, today I was able to watch the missing parts without any problems. In the past
I had tried maybe 10 times, and ws ready to give up.

And I don't care what anyone says, I think Jimmy Mataya is a great commentator.

Hi, I don't understand what you mean by "on the 8". But I am glad I
was able to watch those 2 missing parts finally. When I was unable
to watch them, it seemed that any video that came from those particular
youtube servers would not work, but all other videos would. I'm thinking
that maybe youtube corrected a problem recently, as they seem to work
every time now.

Hi Folks,

I noticed yesterday that a couple of the videos have been pulled from you youtube. The one
with C.J. Wiley and another one which I forget.

I'm not sure why they were pulled, but I hope that the others will stay on there.

If anyone's worried about not being able to see something in the future, you can save them by using http://www.keepvid.com ...the resulting file (it's an .flv file) can be saved anywhere and played in media player classic or riva flv player, though MPC is 100 times nicer.
