I don't know what got me thinking about this...but here it is: Other than pool, what's your favorite hobby/obsession/pasttime/sport?

Golf? Hunt? Play the guitar? Poker?

I know that some may say this is NPR, but in a way, it is pool related. I'm trying to figure out what type of person gets really into pool.

I'll start out....

I play the drums.

I'd have set this up like a poll, but there are way too many possible options.

Well, I'm an EXCELLENT snow-angel maker. I enjoy opening canned food with an old-fashioned twist can opener. I observe the mating habits of earthworms/nightcrawlers on my driveway and sidewalk after summer showers. And last, but certainly not least, I enjoy sniffing most noxious gasses....

plus you may be able to guess by looking at my avatar, and what's written above it... :)

As of late last night SANTANA (the best pitcher in 5x5 rotisserie) stated the only teams he'd accept a trade to would be the YANKS or BOSOX. Based on what's being offered the consensus is he'll be in pinstripes next year. NOW, if only he doesn't get squeezed like YANKEE pitchers normally do.

Adam<===a CUB and NOT a YANKEE fan

With regards to CABRERA: it appears the ANGELS (for now) think the MARLINS are trying to heist them for MIGGY. TIME WILL TELL, but, I think he'll end up an ANGEL.

Besides phat ALBERT the CARDS don't have enough meat in the smokehouse to make a play for either one of these studs.

Cycling

People tend to think it is dangerous to ride in nyc, but it really is not. The city has become much more bike friendly over the years... The theft issue is still here; you just have to streetwise about it.

Believe it or not, there are several pretty cool mountain bike trails 40-60 min outside of Manhattan. Once on the trail you are totally in the woods. Very peaceful and relaxing. By no means these will compete with the ones in Colorado, but they are not park bike path either. I get to see some wild animals every other times on the trail.

Here is a picture of my coffee shop / pool hall bike.. (Caught the fixie fever, built the wheels from scratch)

These are some of the hobbies I enjoy on a weekly basis: jazz drums, biking (road, fixie, mountain), hockey (ice and roller), my awesome dog Riley (lab, pit, australian shepard, and then some), hobby engineering - currently designing a 3W led bike light system, listening to music, cooking, and foosball. Hopefully if we ever get any snow this winter, I'll be skiing often too. In the summer I am really into windsurfing, surfing, and sailing.

I also really am into designing and building drums, hiking, camping, graphic design, and working on my '65 volvo. I don't get to do this stuff every week though, more like when the muse hits me, or in the case of my car, when it isn't working right.

For me Pool is just another one of my many hobbies, and it really is a fun one!

Back in my younger days I dabbled in professional bullfighting until I accidentally killed a raging bull and I swore to myself I'd never step foot into another arena. I then started base jumping from the highest peaks in the world until the thrill eventually wore off. After that I started training in Mixed Martial Arts and once I became proficient in many different fighting styles I started fighting competitively all throughout the world, but mostly in Japan. After the 3rd guy I fought received massive amounts of brain damage... I decided the thrill of pounding my hands & feet into people's faces was not worth people living the rest of their lives as vegetables. I then joined the Air Force and served multiple tours in support of Operation Enduring Freedom & Iraqi Freedom. After I located Saddam Hussein single-handedly and had the Army take all of the credit for it I decided it was time for me to separate from the military.

I now enjoy collecting stamps.

Greyhound Racing. I bet 5 or 6 tracks a night and watch online. It's really a hard way to make a buck now a days with the handle down at every track, but you can still make a profit if you pick the races you feel you can beat. I average playing 10-12 races out of the 70-85 I could bet a night. Johnnyt

well during the summer I play softball, on one or two leagues, and then play softball tournaments on the weekend, Thats basically my thing.

Now If I could spend all the money I've spent on softball bats, and put that towards a cue, I'd be able to buy something like a Szamboti, or Hercek and still have money left over to gamble with.

I repair old clocks. Key wind mostly. Complete disassembly, bushing work, etc. I have about 40 in my collection. Mostly before 1900's. Do some work on the side, but, enjoy it more as a hobby.

I like to play a poker tournament occasionally, when the mood strikes me. I also love playing with my little grandkids (they own me). Also spend time working on my home, always fixing or repairing stuff.

And other than that, I'm always working on some Pool related project. Whether it be another tournament, a new TV show, a new poolroom, a book or an article for a magazine. Playing myself and backing players comes last on the list unfortunately.

Interesting thread.

When I'm not doing anything pool related (practicing, tourneys, etc.), I...

...first and foremost, love spending time with my wife. We both work full time jobs (50+ hours a week each) so time together is a commodity.

...enjoy reading books (conspiracy/drama/thriller). I'm really into David Baldacci right now (Split Second and Simple Genius are 2 of my favorites).

...love computers and anything to do with computers. Since my job revolves around computers, I have the opportunity to be in and around a lot of other people with the same interests. But as of right now, I really enjoy (get ready as this sounds really nerdy) studying processor and chipset architectures. There is so much to learn in this area (both for my job and for personal interests).

...love programming and learning new programming languages. Right now, I am attempting to become competent in VHDL.

...am very interested in learning French. As my wife is French, I am trying to learn this most difficult language, but it is tough if you don't use it every day.

Table tennis. USTTA rating of 1618. Pretty avg. Oh and tekken.

Reminded me of a story...

I was deployed to the United Arab Emirates and there was a community activity center there that I played pool at quite a lot. There was always one guy in there playing "Table Tennis" and seemed to play very well. I was one of the head Network Administrators there and one of the main projects we had was transferring the entire base network over from a private IP scheme to a public IP scheme. Which won't make much sense to many of you but I digress... We had to physically go all throughout the base and I ended up in the "Table Tennis" guys office as I had to do something on his computer. He said something to the effect of, "I don't know how you guy's do this stuff with computers", so I said to the guy trying to be cordial, "Well if I needed help with PING-PONG I'm sure I could come to you"...... The guy gives me his best Earl Strickland death stare and says.... "I don't play PING-PONG, I play Table Tennis!"

That day I learned that there is a difference between the two :)

I used to be into that too, in high school. Unfortunately since then I haven't had any place to set up my tools so I kind of had to stop.

I also used to rock climb, but then I got injured and couldn't for about 6 months while I was healing. Which is basically how I started playing pool.

Now it's just pool. I live in Korea at the moment, all my friends are from the pool hall here, except my GF. So these days I'm either at the pool hall, or leaving the pool hall to go drink with people from the pool hall. Or with my girl.:)

I'd like to say my hobby is learning Korean, but sadly it's not something I spend enough time doing.:(

Quitecoolguy hobbies...hmm

I actually enjoy shooting myslef..i picked it up in 4-H. I was on the skeet shooting team..and just fell in love with it. I now trick shoot. Its been a while..but i had gotten so good that you could put three accorns in your hand and throw them in the air..and i could send them flying with my lever action 22. I enjoy shooting my 9mm Taurus. I have a old thompson 1911..but that thing is a meat and potatoes kinda weapon. It just sits by my bed side incase someone comes in looking for suiside assistance.

I also enjoy modding xboxs ...that is so much fun and i love the look on little kids faces when they see what a modded xbox can do. It so cool to see them flip out over playing the old arcade games that i grew up on chunking quarters into... Joust, Black Tiger, 1942, Ghost and Gobblins, all played on a the xbox.

I also play the guitar..i really enjoy doing that..i am getting better at it. I can play a bunch of songs ..but really need some professional guidence. But i love to pic.

Hey Kevin that over and under is amazing...the scribe work on that thing is amazing...only those of us that know weapons knows how much that thing cost. I almost went with an over and under for skeet shooting ..but to be honest ..i fell in love with my remmington 1100 20 gauge..full choke..that thing is sooo Sweet at skeet shooting. I did get a chance to shoot a Benelli at a Ducks Unlimited Outdoor show ...now i know why those things cost so much..the action on those shotguns are amazing.

Hmmm, I see a AMD. 2 Texas Macs, a 1919-air cooled 30 cal/belt fed (WOW), Armalite AR-50 with Super Sniper 10 X 42 (?) scope, M4 A3 with silencer, 100 round Beta C and some cheap A$$ Russian ammo.

Wow, you definitely have a bunch ($) invested with this arrangement of guns. You must live in Montana or somewhere like that. Silencers aren't legal everywhere. Nice collection.

What's the matter, can't afford a M2? LOL..:D
Thanks, I live in colorado for now. Once it turns into the next california I will have to escape. As for the ammo there is no "cheap" anymore LOL. But yes I shoot as cheap as possible when using the class 3 stuff. As for competions I roll my own. Chris.

I really enjoy building awesome gaming computers, but now that I'm on a budget (married) it's a lot harder. I play soccer, mess around with ASP.NET/XML/VB.NET/SQL05 and I'm learning Ruby on Rails, and recently started going to the range and trying out the different handguns. I think I'm going to get myself a browning hi-power or another 1911-esque handgun. I like listening to jazz when I play pool too... but I'm mostly a punk rock or old rock kind of guy when not playing.

Wow. I really appreciate all of the responses.

I only listed one other hobby in my original post, and am feeling kind of dull and two dimensional (pool and drums). I'd like to add a few things:

Playing with my four year old (boy/girl) twins. Listening to classic rock and jazz. Scuba diving. Reading mysteries (Dennis Lehane, Michael Connelly, Robert Crais, Lee Child, to name a few). Fighting crime (I'm a prosecutor). Fantasy baseball and football. Following the Red Sox and Patriots.

Mountain Biking. I'm out there 4 or 5 times a week.

I also SCUBA dive but, with nothing but dirty ass lakes in Arizona, I only get to go when we go on vacation.

I've always been sort of a dabbler until pool came along. Things that have been my "I must become good at this activity immediately but I'll probably quit once I'm better at it than most people who don't pursue it seriously" activity in the past:

Juggling (only got good at 3 objects, but those 3 did include torches and knives)
Guitar (acoustic, fingerstyle)
Percussion, Symphonic/Marching(snare)/Jazz(vibes) - I was damn good for high school, then never kept at it
Singing (collegiate a capella group, Bass II, classical training but not much classical performance experience, Bass-Baritone)
Vocal arrangement (was musical director of said singing group for 2 years)
Poker (Hold-'em, just a bit better at it than those who don't really play)
Tennis (pretty good ground-strokes and net game, no control over my serve whatsoever)
Soccer (I was okay for a 12-year-old, but sat the bench in high school)
Basketball (at 6'2" and broad-framed and athletic, I was a useful asset in a pick-up game, but couldn't handle the ball or shoot well unless it's a lay-up)
Weight-lifting (I'm pretty strong, and kinda muscular, but not really strong, and I don't have the eating habits in place to be what might be called chiseled)

There are probably others. I really like learning how to do things, but usually lose interest before getting to an elite level.

-Andrew

Let's see. My things other than pool would have to be:

1) Sex. (usually alone. In the dark. In front of a computer.)

2) Stalking. (usually alone. In the dark. Outside the windows of a few women I know)

3) Making fun of others to hide the scores of insecurities that lay deep within the recesses of my mind (usually done in online forums and chat rooms)

4) Correcting people for typogarphical errors (if you don't see the irony in that, please don't respond - just shoot yourself.)

5) But most of all, I like to take long walks on the beach and read poetry. To talk about my feelings. My desires. My fears. I'm a libra, approx. 6'1" and 220lbs., and I guess I'm just looking for someone who likes these things as much as I do. If its you, feel free to PM me.

Before I got so addicted to pool I used to play a lot of video games (XBox 360 not WoW). I like to write novels and sometimes scripts and poetry. I draw and do other artistic things. and very rarely will I pick up my guitar and play a little. Used to skateboard too but I got in some trouble when I was in the service and took a break and lost it all. I know how to push and ride still so I guess its not ALL gone.

Pool is relatively new to me (five years). Golf was always my sport from the age of 13 for over 15 years. My lowest handicap was 4, but I'm lucky to break 80 these days. Took up pool after not having much chance to play golf after moving to America five years ago.

In college, I was very much into juggling. I was proficient at five balls. Can do torches/knives/clubs etc..but ball juggling was always my thing.

After college, I become very much into math puzzles, especially books by Martin Gardner or Raymond Smullyan.

Today, I follow science very closely especially physics and cosmology.

Sure But at least I ain't pulling mine down but once a year and I drove mine to the track, or the far reaches of the county on Saturday nights on pump gas. well sorta, I put that pretty blue 100 Low Lead in it. I had an airport connection. :) Actual formula was as follows... Skydiver + Buddy (Airport manager) + Fuel truck + two 35 gallon plastic drums X double the price over the local Amoco=fuel for weekends.

Take one Very clean 1968 RS Camaro and yank out one dead 307 and 3 speed on the floor.
Massage one 1968 L89 427 by adding a little bit of "Go Fast", some "Get up", a tad of "Hang on tight!", and don't even look at a NOS system.
Breathe through an 850 Holley and Dominator intake manifold and get the grinder out on them aluminum heads and the intake as well.
Slide all that through a Turbo 400 3000 stall to a Chrysler 8 3/4 4.89 Sure Grip rear axle. Yes I said Chrysler. Strong as hell and cheaper than dirt at the swap meet.
Stir in two off the shelf slapper bars extend them by 2 inches to hit the spring eye at the frame and add two 9" X 28" slicks
Spin that baby and turn 11.30's
Leave the slicks at home and turn 11.70's -11.80's and....
drive it to work everyday.

Yeah baby those were the days. :p

I tend to agree with the HEMI theory, Kobyp. Photo of my namesake.

I never had the opportunity to jump on one of those fire breathing, Ford eatin' Cuda's, but there was a buddy who had a '70 Challenger with that 440 Six-Pack 4-Speed that gave me hell without my slicks. Gold and a black top. All factory parts in that motor. (So he said ;) ) That was one beautiful piece of machinery. That thing would creep up in high gear right at the end and I could hear them carbs singing
They wont ever build cars like that one ever again. Kid's now a days have no clue.

But yall got me for sure with that bad boy blower turning up around 8500 in second with that blower belt and air intake howling is a sound ya gotta hear because you cant describe it!

Man oh man there I go getting them chills again!

Sorry yall kinda got carried away. I thought I was over the fever!

I was asked to do a memorial video for the classmates who have passed over the years for our 40th reunion last year. I reluctantly do updates to the video when needed. Bill,
I watched the video and I mean to tell you, that almost made me cry thinking about all those people that have died and their families pain.
You should get some kind of medal for being able to put that together.
I didn't know any of them but it still tugs at your heart, so I'm sure that means a lot to their families and friends.
Very nice job.

Nice choice, brother... for me, lately, it's been Ramon Allones Special Club Coronas... love those little babies!... and just before reading your post I placed an order for two boxes of Diplo #5s... an excellent little cigar if you've never tried one.

Aside from pool, I enjoy the following:

-was really into cars in high school. First car '67 Cougar w/ 390 big block, C6, 3.89's. GREAT car. Fiberglass front end decent suspension upgrades. Drove great and screamed.

-Guitar. Play mostly blues now, though was really into jazz fusion until pool came and eliminated the time necessary to practice enough to play that music. 2000 Fender Strat with Lindy Fralin pickups totally rewired by me. Fender Hot Rod DeVille amp with EL84 tube converters and nice nos tubes, single Celestion Alnico blue speaker. Fairly nice tone for blues. Also have a PRS custom 24. Oh yeah, and my mom's 1959 Ampeg Jet amp. (Which sounds fantastic craked up with a tube screamer in front)

-World of Warcraft. Very addictive game. I want to get the Pool Cue with +12 agility so that I can defeat the local A player so that I can get enough of his money to afford that enchantment of my case which gives me Nerves of Steel while sitting in the chair, so that I can defeat Johnny Archer, which nets me 12,000 honor points which I can trade in for the GCIV in black lacquer finish...etc...

-High end audio and video gear. I work at Tweeter (which isn't exactly high end for audio, but we sell some pretty bad ass TV's.) I really enjoy designing nice home theaters for people, home control systems. Pioneer Elite, Crestron, Martin Logan, etc. Very fun stuff to put together when its someone else's money!! I really enjoy talking to people and figuring out where they are coming from, and what would make them the happiest for their budget.

-Philosophy. This was my major in college (along with Pysch). I like thinking about thinking, the world and how it works, all that stuff. I find pool and the mental game very interesting, and love learning new techniques to focus and compete better.

That's all I can think of for now...

[Edit]Nice looking knife by the way!

I was in Suwon about 4 years back... the suwon station right out front of the korean air base was built while I was there. I don't know about you, but the drivers there are nuts!
Speaking of which (insert fuzzy filter and flashback tune here) I was hit by a bus when I was going to the mall. Well, I was in a taxi... but the bus freakin' hit us man! The bus (full of people) and taxi (full of my friend and me) stopped right there, in the middle of the 4 lane round about and decided to duke it out... RIGHT THERE... awesome.
I was this close to not even giving a tip... but after the fight was over my buddy said "bali blai"... greatest and most scary 2 words I've ever encountered.

The mall was 20 minutes away (without the fight) The driver was nuts... Crazy nuts... driving on the sidewalks, barely slowing down for red lights, going down allies at 50+ mph (90+kph) and just all out crazy, fast, cut a person off in L.A. traffic driving. we made it to the mall in 5 minutes.

(remove filter and cut the tunes, kill the flashback lights)

Take it easy out there, and enjoy some yaki mandu (spelling? I never did learn the language either) and soju for me!

I have realatives pretty much completely surrounding you....dad grew up in Wheaton, and I have family there, Warrenville, Downer's Grove, Naperville, and the odd cousin who moved FAR AWAY to Tinley Park! :D I get up there several times a year to play golf....maybe we could meet and shoot some pool sometime.

1-p-player's pics are quite nice. I like how it's possible to share stuff like that here. On that note, I've been playing guitar for a bit over 2 years.
Here's a lousy quality little wing intro (recorded by dangling a headset from the sound hole, lol):

+1 rofl for vagabond and pharoah.

I see dave and a bunch of others are drummers. Coincidentally today I was learning the song "Everlong" and I stumbled on this youtube video of a wicked drummer - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97pgUkT6kvI
had no idea how awesome drumming is, in general. Makes me want to try.

Dave, I've read everything by the authors you listed, I really love all of them. Reading's a big hobby of mine, I used to work through 3 paperbacks a week, now it's like 1. If you want to try something in the same genre that you might otherwise overlook, check out Carol O'Connell. Yes, a woman can pwn as hard as a man at the "tough cop vs. serial killer" books.

I fix computers and build websites for a little dosh on the side.
I'm a noob but here's a random page I did: http://www.porterhousemaine.com/index.htm
Generally I'm a big computer nerd, A+ certified, network savvy, etc.

I'm ok at design and have picked up a ton of knowledge at working with various programs as a result (photoshop, illustrator, indesign, quark, 3D rendering, etc). I know a lot about making signs, vehicle and window graphics, commercial printing, etc.

I used to be a huge video game freak and travel across the country (and to canada) for tournaments in virtua fighter. I also got into the various capcom fighting games and tekken. My name is well known among fans of a goofy little shooting game called Gunbound.

Helping others solve problems and achieve goals.

Freestyle frisbee on the beach, in ankle deep water, doing diving catches into the surf.

Ferrari. Fast, exotic cars. Horsepower on demand. High speed driving around long sweeping uphill turns, especially on Torrey Pines hill, pulling G's, 3 lanes wide going up.

Doing aerobatics in an open cockpit biplane and flying low and slow over the surf for hundreds of miles then side-slipping for landing on grass in a crosswind at sunset.

Astronomy, philosophy, philanthropy, photography, weather.

Yoga, especially headstands.

Vegetarian cuisine.

Writing.

The sweet serenity of solitude.

A long nap in the warm afternoon sun in my hammock, to the sounds of the surf.

Good friends.
