It must be true, I read it online

Posted 05-31-2009 at 03:51 PM by AzHousePro

It never ceases to amaze me what is said and passed off as the truth online.

Now most people know that there are three major billiards magazines out there and they all have websites.

I am used to one of them proudly proclaiming traffic stats that are so far from the truth that is laughable, but this note isn't about that magazine.

I took a look this weekend at the Media Guide from Pool and Billiard magazine. (poolmag.com) They state on their media guide webpage that they reach "thousands of players and fans EVERY DAY" and their media guide itself states that "Over 50,000 unique visitors stop in each month".

Wow, those are pretty good numbers. Heck, I know our traffic numbers and they are just barely more than that.

So, I cruise out to Quantcast.com to check out our total #s to see just how much over that # we are. On a lark, I look up the traffic on quantcast for Poolmag.

Very interesting things appeared. Turns out that Quantcast shows poolmag getting 165 global users a day and 5.3 thousand global users a month.

I hear you saying "But quantcast is just like alexa and they just guess as to what traffic is." But no, Quantcast is different. Quantcast allows a webmaster to include a script provided by quantcast that lets quantcast track your actual numbers and present them to the world. We signed up for quantcast a long time ago because we have no reason to keep our traffic #s secret.

Now, I don't have any problem with patting yourself on the back and I think competition is good for everyone, but what I want to know is how it is that "one of the most respected pool publications in the world" (their words) could proudly state that they received website stats that were 10 times their true #s.

Things that make you go "hmmm".

Billiard enthusiasts have been asking each other for a great many years, "why isn't our game on prime time and our champions pulling in the big bucks" and the answers given thus far have yet to include the fact that, in general, the USA Billiard Community has been an unethical group. More so than many of us would imagine.

I applaud all like AZHousePro here for exposing unethical conduct whenever and wherever found in our billiard world for in so doing they are striving to make things so much better for the rest of us.

for a more ethical and better billiard world,
