What a comedian... All wood has grain, typically vertical grain in shafts, horizontal or the crazy burly stuff in butts.Bring it on. Maybe I would finally learn to leave white bread in the middle of the table. I would have to buy one of synthetic shafts. I bought a Cuetec when they came out. Do way I'm putting a top notch maple across a bar box. I know, showing my age. Google hard rock maple younger players.
Nothing like the look of grain less maple cue!

Means, figureless. Only woodguys make the distinction. What a comedian... All wood has grain, typically vertical grain in shafts, horizontal or the crazy burly stuff in butts.
7 x 4 , not 7 x 3.5?I wouldn't be too bothered. I'd say the majority of bars use the same 7x4 foot English pool tables used in competition - the main differences being the quality of the cloth and balls. So I'm happy enough there.
However, from the few pubs I've played pool in, I've had to deal with the table being in a cramped area. This means not using my own one-piece pool cue and having to use a rack cue, which I don't like.
All in all, if the cloth and balls are in decent nick, and the table has enough space around it, I'd consider not hanging up my cue. Although, this means not being able to play snooker any more, which sucks.
Damn, I don't know what kind of bars you people have to go to, but....
I play league two nights a week in a medium-sized bar that has eight Valley bar boxes (3.5x7). The equipment is maintained well, Valley Cougar magnetic cue balls are used, plenty of space between tables, and everyone in the place are all friendly to a point where it's almost family-like. Non-smoking, good heat/air-conditioning, no drunks, no fights. The regulars that come in for a drink (non pool-playing) are responsible drinkers. Except for the nights where I shoot like sh*t, I've never had a bad experience there (going on five years).
And I think that at least half of the people that say they would never play again if all there was is bar boxes are saying that KNOWING that will never be the case.
If you love the game enough, you're gonna play it if it has to be on the kitchen table with oranges and broomsticks.
Maniac (can't remember how long it's been since playing on a 9-footer)
No, 7x4. English tables either come in two dimensions: 7x4 or 6x3.7 x 4 , not 7 x 3.5?
I thought pool tables were designed to be twice as long as wide.
A pool table 7’ x 4’ would alter the Diamond system for kick shots.
That would be akin to playing on a 9’ x 5’ table which seems screwy.
I live in the Ok., Kan., Tex. area and for YEARS all the best action was on the bar box. Still is in a lot of towns. For a LOT of players the Valley bb was like their own personal ATM. Could get pretty rowdy at times but hell, that was part of the fun.
