If you could only play on bar box's in bars would you hang up your cue?

I’ve only been able to play on bar boxes in bars. You can’t find a 9’ table outside the major urban areas. I’m in the capital of Michigan and you have to drive an hour to get on one. That said, I do seek them out as much as I can. But I have no issue with playing the short track.
Some of my fondest memories, way back in the day, were of playing in bar leagues, on bar tables. Our best five against their best five. No weird handicaps. If you want to win, just play better…

What a comedian... All wood has grain, typically vertical grain in shafts, horizontal or the crazy burly stuff in butts.
Means, figureless. Only woodguys make the distinction.
I personally do not lk like the Bar Box, or 4" X 8, Tables, grew on on big table, prefer em to Bar Tables. Use to play Tuesday Nine 9 Ball Bar Tournament, until the who experence got more negative then positive.
That Bar closed, because they just had heads in backside. People got tire of fight, drams, and Mickey Mouse Tournment going into wee hour of am, to sell drinks.
JMHO. BCAPL does well with their Bar Box Tournment thing in Sin City.

I do not play on 7’ tables commonly referred to as bar box size pool tables.
Even a Diamond 7’ table, when the table isn’t 9’ or 10’, I don’t even bother.
Some schoolyards had 8’ basket ball courts but growing up as a kid, when
the basket wasn’t 10’ high, I wouldn’t even go on the court to shoot baskets.
The game of pool is distinguished by player skills, as well as difficulty of table play.
9’ & 10’ tables are the truest measure of your pool skills, especially with tight pockets.
So I want the toughest tables to play pool on because I have confidence in my abilities.
Make the corner pockets 4.25”. I do not care. The harder the table, the greater the reward.

7 x 4 , not 7 x 3.5?
I thought pool tables were designed to be twice as long as wide.
A pool table 7’ x 4’ would alter the Diamond system for kick shots.
That would be akin to playing on a 9’ x 5’ table which seems screwy.
Damn, I don't know what kind of bars you people have to go to, but....
I play league two nights a week in a medium-sized bar that has eight Valley bar boxes (3.5x7). The equipment is maintained well, Valley Cougar magnetic cue balls are used, plenty of space between tables, and everyone in the place are all friendly to a point where it's almost family-like. Non-smoking, good heat/air-conditioning, no drunks, no fights. The regulars that come in for a drink (non pool-playing) are responsible drinkers. Except for the nights where I shoot like sh*t, I've never had a bad experience there (going on five years).
And I think that at least half of the people that say they would never play again if all there was is bar boxes are saying that KNOWING that will never be the case.
If you love the game enough, you're gonna play it if it has to be on the kitchen table with oranges and broomsticks.

For me the people and place make all the difference in the world. I went to an alleged pool hall out in the piney woods. Ran into a jerk immediately, haven't been back! Went to a bar with a bunch of fifty-fifty pay bar tables and one very ratty nine foot big G. I always played on the big G. The owner wouldn't charge me table time and I tipped his employees very generously. We were all happy!
I prefer nice equipment. I would like to play on nothing but ten foot tables in a place with a sixteen to twenty foot ceiling. However, if I have to choose good people and poor equipment or good equipment and unpleasant people to be around the choice is easy, good people!
The game is different on a bar table but I get a chuckle out of the people saying they are too easy. Johnny A was known as a bar table monster when I beat him on one. He scared me early in the match and I never let him have anything faintly resembling a makeable shot after that! Even easier to do it to a big table or snooker specialist. Went to school with a rich kid. He had a game room at home that included snooker table and basketball court. He confidently said that nobody could beat him on a pool table. Fortunately for me, I was nobody!
Short track, long track, big pockets, little pockets, as long as me and my opponent are playing on the same table I don't care! The seven foot Diamonds play mighty sweet with old eyes. Got on one practicing and I noticed the owners of the hall taking turns watching me through a little serving window. The balls were rolling that night and I was flashing back a bit. I think short rack one pocket might be fun on a seven foot Diamond.

No, 7x4. English tables either come in two dimensions: 7x4 or 6x3.
In the days before ATM's I considered barboxes my cash cows. I might have to hit two or three places, rarely five or six, and I could get in decent action. Ten a game is as good or better than a hundred dollar race to seven and the people getting their pockets lightened went along with five or ten or even twenty at a time a lot easier than handing over a hundred or two. Also a lot easier to stall and lose a bet here and there playing by the game, hard to do that playing by the set. If somebody got down then back to even they would quit you in a heartbeat.
I think I might have became a better tournament player had it not been for the dollar attraction of the boxes. I paid the mortgages on two properties and lived off of the barboxes when I needed to.

Lot of hate for the bars in this thread. I’ve been playing on bar tables in bars for a long time. Even when we had a pool hall here, the bars were more fun and a lot busier. If I turned up my nose and wouldn’t consider playing on a lowly bar table I’d be driving an hour to play. I’d rather play for 2 more hours than make the drive. There’s a lot more entertainment in a bar too.

I would only play if a dedicated sports bar with excellent tables and fit and healthy people. Also, at least 8 foot tables.
I play in 3 leagues. The two in non alcoholic settings are by far more interesting people and conversation. The one that serves alcohol is a sports bar and half the players don’t drink... many are our hiking and dancing friends.
The most fun is at our community centre. Squeaky clean tables , natural light and no distracting music or TVs. It’s as much about the friends as playing the game. ...some top notch players.
