Although I don't think they have any instructional material on straight rail, kozoom.com has a nice collection of straight rail matches. Search for them under 'free game'. There more than a few runs of 400, so definitely something to be learned.

They may have some instructional articles though, but most of it is 3 cushion and balkline.

this series was shot ..... quite awhile back but you can search and get it all online they are numbered and the overhead cam is very good ... unfortunately it is in Dutch so any commentary re - stroking , follow thru , etc. is missed .

There is a fountain of straight rail videos in Kozoom's archival matches. Watch, set up the shots, and replicate the results

Here's a good lesson. 400 points from the break.
http://www.kozoom.com/en/billiard-carom/video/7526.html

Notice 8 innings to gather. 14 innings to get on the rail.
Don't be in a hurry. Make each shot mean something but stay calm.
Learn the soft touch.
Learn the ultra thin hit with the soft touch.
Learn the kiss back and when to use it and how.
Be patient and conservative in your game.

And of course you'll need to learn masse to hit the big numbers.
The game has no respect. Its very tough to make big runs. Most can't get past 6 or 10.

What standard of player does it take to score 100 regularly? It sometimes sounds like any half decent player can do it, but the level of control and consistency I see in those videos shows that they are very high level players. But I seem to remember reading that the top players can run 100 pretty much on command.

I've only been on a carom table once and we played straight rail. I managed an 8 which I know isn't very good, but it was quite fun. Love watching carom though.

Texas Carom Club 11-10-2015 09:40 AM

Dean_H 11-10-2015 11:55 AM

Are you able to view the other matches on
Youtube besides the Dutch ones? In the Dutch stream there is periods of inactivity between the matches where there is just the table and the three balls bunched together in the center of the table. Hope you are able to see the other youtube stuff.

For some older resources from the Golden Age of American Billiards I can suggest Daly's Billiard Book (1913) and Modern Billiards by the Brunswick-Balke-Collender company.

Links to where you can view pdfs of each book online:

https://books.google.com/books?id=qX...nswick&f=false

and

http://www.chicagobilliardmuseum.org...liard_book.pdf

They are also both available in hard print at abebooks:

http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/Sear...illiards&sts=t

and

http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/Book...s&an=brunswick

There is always the Hoppe book as well, which treats both straight and 3-cushion.
