Do any of you guys know if the Thorsten/Tony match from the World 14.1 is available to watch online? I’ve searched but can’t seem to find it. Thanks. Charles

Charlie Williams did not have a straight pool tournament this year so far as I know. One was announced for April, I believe, but then nothing more was heard of it and it didn't happen. The only 14.1 events in the US this year that I know of were the Derby City Classic and the US Open in Las Vegas.

The American Straight Pool Championship is coming up in Virginia Beach in October.

Well, no, it won't. It will be Dragon's "World Tournament of 14.1", but that's different.

The Charlie Williams "World Tournament of 14.1" has moved around quite a bit during the last few years.
The same is true for the "American 14.1 Straight Pool Championship" (formerly the Maryland 14.1 Straight Pool Championship), promoted by Peter Burrows.

It's very difficult to raise the prize money, find/pay a competent tournament staff, secure a suitable venue, and fill the field with top pro-level 14.1 players.

The Derby City 14.1 Challenge and Tournament has come to an end, despite the Herculean efforts of Dennis, Bill, Bob, and others.
Perhaps someone will try to bring it back to life, but Diamond should place a greater emphasis on 14.1 and devote more tables for the players if they want it to continue.

Of the current 14.1 Tournaments in the US, the American 14.1 seems to draw the best players and offer the biggest prize fund by far.
This year it's estimated to be $42,000 and precedes the International 9-Ball Open in Norfolk, so some players will combine the two events and reduce their expenses.

I'm not sure if the Charlie Williams "World Tournament of 14.1" in December dovetails with other events in Florida, but if not, it's going to be tough to draw a world class field because Florida is not exactly the epicenter of Straight Pool.

Well I'm a little out of touch aren't I. Now it's been mentioned I vaguely remember about the more recent match. Didn't even think about it when I saw the OP.
I guess because that tournament has gone so far downhill I just don't pay any attention to it anymore. I thought last year would have been the end of it.
I wonder if Hohmann had anything to do with keeping it alive and the location. Anybody know if he still lives in Jacksonville?
I'd agree with kkdanamatt that the field will likely be substandard whereas the American 14.1 will have a world class field of players.

That's well deserved praise for Bob Jewett, the founder of the 14.1 challenge in 2009, and Dennis and Bill, whose great work ethic made administration of the event possible.

But let's not misstate what really happened. Corrections welcomed as I'm going from memory here.

The 2009 Derby
The Bigfoot Challenge didn't exist yet. The "Fatboy" 10-ball, it's forerunner, did take place, but the matches were played at midnight, so as not to interfere with the other events at the Derby. Field size in the three core events of Bank Pool, One Pocket, and 9-ball was about 300 players. One room containing two tables was dedicated to the 14.1 challenge. The Derby was manageable.

The 2019 Derby
The Bigfoot had already evolved into a premier event at the Derby and the entire event was played in the Accu-stats arena. Field size in the core events of Bank Pool, One Pocket, and 9-ball was about 400 players. The Derby was no longer manageable, and for the second consecutive year, the 9-ball final finished after 3:00 AM on the Derby's final day.

In Conclusion
To sum, the Derby has grown dramatically over the past decade, and while straight pool enthusiasts like me are disappointed that the 14.1 challenge appears to have been crowded out of the Derby, there is no denying that among the five disciplines (Bank Pool, One Pocket, 9-ball, 10-ball, straight pool) contested, straight pool has been the one with the least priority for years, and that's a shame but it also reflects how much the Derby has grown over the past decade. Hence, the statement that Diamond should give the 14.1 Challenge a little more priority, as pleasing to me as that would be, doesn't really hold water. The venue at the Horseshoe just isn't big enough anymore to easily support the timely completion of all the events.

From my view, it is unfortunate that the Horseshoe decided not to expand the meeting/convention space during the current remodel which was necessitated by the floods and the new law that allows the casino to be on land. Greg Sullivan would love to have enough room to also have an amateur event on small tables along side the main events. They could easily fill twice the table area. I believe they already fill the hotel.

But one event per year by itself cannot justify the cost of construction to the owners.

It just seems logical to me that the dissolved 14.1 Challenge previously held at the Derby would work so much better at Pat Fleming's International 9-Ball event.
